Saturday. Behind the plate to catch it will be his older
brother Gladwyn, who was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008.
When asked about his reaction to hearing that
the fi eld will be named in his honour, Scott said,
Quite frankly I was stunned. Quite an honour and
I felt just really humble I dont even know if I have
the words to describe the way I felt.
Born in McConnell, MB, Scott was a prolifi c athlete in Manitoba sports. He played both hockey and
football at Brandon College, where he was inducted
into the Brandon University Wall of Fame; his brother Gladwyn, whom Glennis played with at Brandon
College, is also an inductee.
Scott went on to play 15 years in the Manitoba
Senior Baseball League and also represented Canada at a number of international events. At one point
in his youth, he was invited to the spring training of
the St. Louis Cardinals, although Scott turned down
the offer to focus on his career as an educator.

n hopes of keeping medical services local and in the community, the

board of the Minnedosa and District
Health Foundation have decided to
invest $100,000 toward the new Dr.
Ajai Khandelwal Primary Care Centre. Representatives from the Health
Foundation recently presented a
cheque to members of the Primary

Care Centre committee in front of

the Minnedosa District Health Centre.
The new clinic will be built directly across the street, to the west
of the current hospital and construction is hoped to begin in early 2017.
Local residents had an opportunity
to view plans and images of the proposed clinic during a public meeting
held Wednesday night.

Th e Minnedosa and District

Health Foundation was incorporated in 1995 by the Board of Directors
of the Minnedosa District Hospital
and Personal Care Home. It was established in order to ensure that all
money donated to the local hospital
and care home is spent on the needs
of those local facilities and local
health care in general.

For over 30 years Scott
held various roles with
Baseball Manitoba and
eventually served as the
coach and president of the
national program for Baseball Canada.
Th e reason we are
calling it Glennis Scott

instrumental in starting
the baseball diamonds at
the current site, said Terry
McLenehan, president of
Minnedosa Minor Baseball. The other reason for
it is because Glennis was
inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame as

in both playing and coaching.

to celebrate the game and
one of the things were
trying to do is celebrate
the history of the game.

Run, run, run

A number of local runners will be heading into Winnipeg this

weekend to participate in the Manitoba Marathon. The run originated in Winnipeg in 1979 and has grown to a multi-course event
which attracts some 14,000 participants each year. The full marathon is 26.2 miles long with a number of shorter distant events
including a half marathon and childrens run. Again this year, one
of the marathons charity partners is MBNF (Manitoba Neurofibromatosis Support Group) and one group of local participants
are running in support of MBNF.

Not a rental

We have been informed of a slight error in last weeks house

fire article. It had been stated that the home where the fire took
place on 3rd Street N.E. was a rental home. We have since learned
that while it was a rental home in the past, at the time of the fire it
was being occupied by the owners. Our apologies for this error.

Sports Dinner keynote

Sponsorship packages have gone out for the Recreation Commissions 19th annual Sports Dinner. Th
e keynote speaker for this
years event, being held in October, will be Marty McSorley. For
those who may not be hockey fans, McSorely played in the NHL
from 1983 to 2001 debuting with the Pittsburg Penquins and in
the mid 1980s the Edmonton Oilers. During his Oilers career, McSorley earned the title of Wayne Gretzkys bodyguard.

I suspect that you
arent getting the job.
Not because the answer

because your response
is simply not relevant to
the conversation at hand.
Whether your statement is
true or not, is really not in
question. No doubt, that

their interaction with you
forever though. And you
can bet that the story will
live on and be shared with
other colleagues, pretty
much assuring that you
never get work with that

The same occurs daily
in community development. We are responding
to questions with answers
that dont directly speak to
the topic, then many are
befuddled that we arent
making any progress in at-

tracting new investment in

Manitoba. When a business interest or a company
CEO asks us to tell them a
little bit about ourselves,
we talk about the quality of life, we talk about
safe and quiet streets, but
we dont really talk about
business.
When were talking to
business people, we need
to set our folksy charm
aside and discuss the brass
tax. We need to talk about
how we can represent the
best fi t for their business.
What strategic benefit
would a Minnedosa-based
location create for their
operation? Are we rich in
natural resources, reducing costs to source and import that material? Do we
have a strong labour pool
so they can be assured to a
suitable workforce? Once
we can check off the businesses need to haves,
then we can talk about
the added benefi ts for all
those who will have the
opportunity to work out of
that Minnedosa location.
Th e approach needs
to be similar for attracting families as well. Sure,
the beach and area recreation are great bonuses
for residents of any age,

but if were not able to address their basic needs a

we are wasting our time.
When they ask us What
makes Minnedosa the
place that I want to set

30 years? we need to be
prepared with an answer
that amounts to more than
how attractive we are by
comparison to other communities that dont enjoy
our geography.
Maybe you truly are

TRIBUNE DEADLINE - Tuesday at 12 Noon

Notice to Watercraft Operators

Riding Mountain National Park
The 2016 aquatic invasive species (AIS) inspection program
has launched in the park. The co-operation of watercraft
operators is essential in preventing this threat to park
waters. All motorized and non-motorized watercraft
entering park waters are required to undergo a free
inspection and will be issued a permit by Parks Canada
watercraft inspectors. Permits and decals issued in 2015
are no longer valid, a new inspection is required. Permits
issued in 2016 are only valid for 2016. If visitors launch their
watercraft outside of RMNP, your permit is no longer valid
and you must have your watercraft re-inspected. Staff are
available for inspections by calling (204) 848-7275 during
the week and at the boat launches (Boat Cove & East End) on
weekends. Non-compliant operators may be prosecuted. The
maximum fine is $100,000.
Parks Canada is also taking precautions against zebra mussels
and other AIS by consolidating boat launches around Clear
Lake. The Frith Beach and Spruces day-use area launches are
closed permanently. Boats can launch from the Boat Cove
and East End (at the Clear Lake Golf Course entrance). The
East End will be limited to existing boat launch ramps, with
no access along the shoreline.

last year the group did a
major overhaul of the garden, including new plantings and major trimming
and pruning.
The Society also decided to take the deer
scare feature out of operation because of the
heavy maintenance it required and replace it with
a set of bronze crane statues. This spring the deer
scare was moved to sit in
front of the library wall
so that it is still on display but not functional.

Try Flank Steak For Fathers Day

Cooking
With
CHEF DEZ

lank steak is one of my

favourite cuts of beef
for the BBQ because it offers big beefy flavour, and
is extremely tender when
cut and prepared properly.
Due to the fact that there
are many people that dont
know much about this
specifi c cut, it tends to be
a very underrated steak in
comparison to more popular cuts such as strip loin,
sirloin, rib-eye, etc. There
is also a lot of misinformation in the media about
fl ank steak and I hope to
clear up some of this confusion for you.
Beef fl
ank steak is a
long and fl at cut of meat
from the abdominal muscles of the cow. It is significantly tougher than other
cuts of meat as it comes
from a strong well-exer-

cised part of the cow. The

direction of the grain of the
meat and connective tissue is prominently visible,
especially in the raw form.
Moist heat techniques,
such as braising, will be
successful in making the
meat tender, but it can also
be simply grilled to a rare/
medium-rare/medium
doneness and then sliced
thinly across the grain, and
still be very tender.
I have witnessed many
Chefs on TV state that
one must marinate a flank
steak before grilling in order for it to be tender. This
is not true. Although marinating is fi ne to do with a
flank steak, it is an optional step, not a requirement.
The acid in a marinade will
break down the connective
tissue over time, but I have

barbequed so many flank

steaks that have been
melt in your mouth tender, with no marinating
whatsoever. The secret is
to make sure you dont
over-cook the steak and
then slice it thinly in the
opposite direction of how
the grain of the meat is
running (across the grain).
For optimal fl avour,
my preferred way of preparing fl ank steak is to
fi rst coat it with a spice
rub, grill it to the desired
doneness, let it rest for a
few minutes, slice it very
thinly across the grain,
and then drizzle it with
garlic butter. When slicing it thinly, I also make
sure I slice it on an angle,
approximately 45 degrees.
Flank steak is a very thin
cut of meat and slicing it
on a 45-degree angle will
make more elongated
slices and provide better
plate coverage, or sandwich coverage.
Letting it rest after
cooking will help the steak
to retain more of its juic-

es. All meat, from a small

steak to large roasts or turkeys, should have a resting
time for this reason. The
bigger the size of the meat,
the longer it should rest. I
let a flank steak rest for at
least 5 minutes.
I have also seen Chefs
on TV take a knife and
score the flank steak
before going into their
marinade - in my opinion
this is incorrect as well.
Although at fi rst it may
seem to make sense to
put cuts into the surface
of the meat to aid in the
penetration of the marinade into the inside of the
steak, however this goes
against one of the golden
rules of grilling meats:
Never Pierce your Meat.
The goal of cooking meat
is to have the end result as
a juicy flavourful product.
If you pierce your meat
(by jabbing a fork into it
for flipping, or cutting into
it), then valuable juices
will be lost. Meat that has
been scored prior to cooking will suff er the same

damaging situation, and

always use tongs to flip
your steak, not a fork.
Many premade spice
rubs for meat can be
purchased at your local
grocery store, but I find
it more satisfying to create diff erent ones myself
with ingredients I have on

hand already. Here is a basic Cajun blackening spice

rub recipe for you to experiment with. If available
in your area, try replacing
the paprika (or at least a
portion of it) with a sweet
smoked paprika for more
flavour. Happy cooking!

Dear Reena,
I make my own zucchini
bread and I have one question. Is it important to drain
the zucchini before adding it
to the batter? Jess
Dear Jess,
For moist and delicious
zucchini bread it is not necessary to drain excess liquid
before adding zucchini to
the batter; added liquid results in a moister cake. Extra
Tip: Liven up zucchini cake
by adding a crunch topping
to each loaf. For two loaves
combine: One quarter cup
quick oats, quarter cup brown
sugar, eighth cup white flour,
eighth cup butter and a pinch
of cinnamon. Bake loaves as
usual for 15 minutes. Remove
from oven and add crunchy
topping. Return to oven for
remaining bake time.
Dear Reena,
What is the best way to
heat up crystalized honey?
The container of honey that I
purchased at a grocery store
bears an expiration date;
how long does honey actually
keep? Nancy
Dear Nancy,
Honey is an expensive product and well worth
the money in terms of taste
and health properties. Both
raw and pasteurized honey

should last indefinitely if

stored in an air tight container away from heat. Expiration
or best before dates are commercial requirements, just as
other products such as vinegar and salt may also carry
a best before date. To liquefy
crystalized honey, place the
jar inside a pot of hot water;
the honey will return to its
liquefied state. If you do run
out of honey, substitute corn
syrup in its place, the consistency and flavor may be altered a little, but it works in a
pinch. Did you know? Honey
is a healthier sweetener than
table sugar containing many
nutrients such as: thiamine,
riboflavin, pantothenic acid,
nicotinic acid, biotin, folic
acid, Vitamin C, iron, copper, potassium, magnesium,
phosphorous, calcium salts,
enzymes, proteins and more.
Dear Reena,
Lately my daughter has
been purchasing inexpensive
rayon dresses and shirts. I
already shrank three dresses
because I refuse to spend my
time handwashing. Is there a
way to safely machine wash
rayon? Rob
Dear Rob,
Your best bet is to wash
garments according to the
care label instructions. For
rayon fabrics if you do not

wish to dry clean or wash

by hand, machine wash on
COLD and hang to dry.
Hints for Coffee Lovers
Here is my best substitute for cheap and delicious
French Vanilla Coffee Creamer. Into a quart mason jar
combine: 2 cups sweetened
condensed milk, 2 cups whole
milk, 2 tsp. vanilla extract.
Shake and store in fridge. By
Alina
I am an expert coffee drinker
and have found that most
people purchase fresh coffee and store it in the freezer.
Here is my advice; purchase a
few weeks worth of the freshest coffee beans that you have
access to. Divide the amount
into weekly portions; store the
current weeks coffee beans or
ground coffee at room temperature and the remainder
in the freezer. By Carlos
When I grind my coffee in the
morning, I always grind in
some cinnamon with it. Cinnamon is packed with antioxidants and tastes great! By
Laura
Re: Watering Plants While
Away
Dear Reena,
I am a member of the
I Cant Possibly Remember
to Water My Plants Everyday Club; I also travel a lot
and have several clay potted
plants. I purchased an outdoor metal bathtub that I line
with bricks, which of course
are very porous. Before I leave
on vacation, I soak each brick
and fill the tub with water half
way up the bricks. Then I set
one plant pot on each brick
and water my plants. They
stay hydrated for up to two
weeks! Daniella

SANDY LAKE NEWS

By DIANE BACHEWICH

loria Campbell returned home from

Calgary where she visited
with daughter Kyla and
Brad Bickerton and grandchildren Kreese, Bry and
Abby Rose. While there she
also visited with Paulette
(Millenchuk) and Greg Adams.
Congratulations
to
Jordyn Maduke and Jerrett
Bicknell who were married
here on Saturday with the
reception following in the
community hall.
Get well wishes to
Barb Osadec who is in the
Minnedosa Hospital.

Th e lucky winner of
the Legion Mens 50/50
draw for the month of May
went to Elsie Spitula.
Donnie Bilyk spent a
few days in Regina recently.
Chub and Helen Lewandoski, Ida Andreychuk, Francis Kuzmak and
Margaret Dmytriw, took in
the dance at the Onanole
Rec
Centre
recently
Th rough the Decades
which was presented by
the Onanole School. They
enjoyed the evening with
dancing and fellowship
with the students to the
band called Heartbreakers. They played old time

music to country and classic rock. All had a real enjoyable time.
Helen Derhak is tickled pink as great granddaughter number 18 arrived on Saturday, June
11th. Ivy Margaret is also
the second granddaughter for Gary and Doreen
Derhak of Calgary and the
second daughter for Laura
(Derhak) and Ryran Farwell of Calgary, a little sister for Scarlett.
Connie Newnan, Executive Director of MASC
(Manitoba Association of
Senior Centres) hosted by
Harrison/Park age friendly Initiative Committee

invited
representatives
from three Drop-in Centres, Sandy Lake, Newdale
and Onanole to hear what
MASC can off er to our
communities. This was
held on Wednesday at the
Sandy Lake Drop-in Centre.
Th e community was
shocked to hear of the accidental death of Laurence
Pollischuk at his farm.
Sympathy is extended to
his wife Cecile and sons
Robert and Judy, Sheldon and Tammy, grandchildren Nathan, Ty and
Brody, also mother-in-law
Pearl Chupka and the rest
of the Pollischuk family.

There was a nice attendance for the first of the

season Hymn Sing at the
Drop-in Centre on Sunday
morning. Doreen and Gary
Stapleton lead us with
the hymns and everyone
got to choose their favourite hymn to sing. Sunrise
Credit Union supplied the
coff ee and song sheets.
Our next hymn sing will be
on July 12th.
