English Teaching Criteria

1. Teachers Absences
Teachers must justify their absences and follow the areas procedures for
replacing class hours or substituting by another teacher.
2. Students Absences
The only acceptable justification is that sent by the area, including exam dates.
3. Book
The use of the book is mandatory. The digital version of the book is available in
every classroom.
4. Lists
Report every student that is on your list, and not in class; or in your class and not
on your list
5. Attendance:
Teachers MUST take attendance in every class. During 4 hour classes, take
attendance at the beginning and after the break.
6. Introductory Class:
Present yourself, give grading criteria and explain class rules. Explain the UNE
English rules. Give students your official email and communicate with them
through their official emails as well.
7. Incorporate Groupwork:
Make your ESL students feel comfortable practicing their new language; get them
to work in pairs or larger groups so that they can help each other. Lessons
become fun, and communicating and learning English becomes more natural
when students can work through it together and peer-teach.
8. Maximize Oral Communication
Make sure you keep an oral focus in the classroom. Encourage students to speak
as often as possible to help ingrain the sound and feel of the language in a
students mind and to learn the verbal cues. Developing a comfort with speaking
English in front of other people is crucial to overall ESL success.
9. Lesson plans should de be sent in by due date.
10. Use a Diverse Lesson Plan
Mix reading, writing, observing and listening with your oral focus to create a
comprehensive lesson plan to cater to individual learner needs..
11. Incorporate Cultural and Professional Lessons to Personalize
Make the English language relevant and personal. Use personal experiences and
backgrounds to teach the language. Ensure that you teach the language while
making it relevant to students culture. In doing so, you will help your students find
the language interesting and enjoyable.

12. Limit Translation

Limit the use of translators, if students need the meaning of a word or phrase;
have them use English-English dictionaries, glossaries, thesaurus, pictionaries or
mimic. Ask students to memorize words and phrases, but make sure that class
time is spent putting words and phrases into practice rather than just reciting
words.
13. Speak English only
Include students.
14. Give Homework to Keep English a Focus After Class. Give your students
work to practice the English they learned in class to ensure that they dont forget.
15. Have Students Read Aloud
Students should practice reading aloud every class to blend auditory, oral and
reading skills and to become more comfortable speaking English in front of their
peers.
16. Let Students Make Mistakes
Let your students work through their mistakes. Whether they are speaking, writing
or reading English, allowing them to correct themselves will help them get a
better grasp on the language. It may be tempting to interject with the correct
pronunciation or spelling, but if a student can recognize his or her mistake and
correct it, they are truly making progress.
17. Teach by Doing
The best way to teach English as a second language is to model each aspect of
your lesson plan before asking students to iterate it. Clearly pronounce words and
sentences. Read aloud to the class and ask them to repeat. Tell a story about
your weekend to help them with syntax and inflection. By modeling your lesson
for your ESL students, you will help them feel comfortable with what you are
asking them to do.
18. Teacher Talking Time
Keep teacher talking time to a minimum, 70%/30% student-teacher is considered
a guideline with no more than 10 minutes at a time.
19. Electronic Gadgets
The use of electronic gadgets by students should be limited to teacher prompted
activities, such as the use of online dictionaries, online investigations, and guided
games, among others.
20. Technology in the Classroom
The use of technology and internet for teaching is encouraged. Teachers should
adapt their methods to new technologies making classes interesting, relevant and
dynamic.
