Venice

One of the famous city in Italy is Venice. It get its popularity

because Venice is a rich and interesting city. It has a lot of history
documentations and offers a lot of attractive things to visitors.
Venice has been established over 2000 years ago when waves of
barbarians drove people out of their homes in various Roman cities.
Around years 800-1100 AD, Venice underwent a period of growth, and
became more centralized. It gradually developed into a city state, which
is essentially a self-governed region of a country that trades freely among
others.
As Venice gradually developed, it became a prominent player in the
sea trade of the time. It was set upon by many different threats. Pirates
became the hugest problem. Fewer and fewer shipments were making it
through the treacherous water. It happened when the Republic of Venice
decided to move the operations to the eastern shores.
When we think of Venice, the first thing which comes to mind are
canals. They are considered the trademark of the city. Canals are mostly
recognizable for providing the main form of transportation throughout the
city. Visiting Venice brings a rich aura of history and culture. Floating
through the canals for an afternoon makes for a memorable experience,
and its one that any traveler commonly enjoy.

MY HOUSE

I live in a small house. It has five rooms: there are two bedrooms, a
living room, a bathroom, and a kitchen. Indeed it is a small house; but I
like living in here for wasting my spare time.
When the door is open, I can see the living room. It is so small with
only three chairs and a table, nothing else. I prefer reading a novel in this
room.
My bedroom is in the left side of the living room. In this room there
is a night table next to the bed, a TV, a radio, and a computer. When
being bored of reading, I usually play online games, chat with my friends
via Facebook and so on.
Next to my bedroom is my mother's. I do not know what is inside
because I never come in to see it. In the right side of the living room
there is the kitchen. In the kitchen I have everything I need when I get
hungry. It is very pleasure when my mother cooks, the smell fills my
whole house.

Guitar

My most valuable possession is an old, slightly warped blond

guitar--the first instrument I taught myself how to play.
It's nothing fancy, just a Madeira folk guitar, all scuffed and
scratched and finger-printed. At the top is a bramble of copper-wound
strings, each one hooked through the eye of a silver tuning key. The
strings are stretched down a long, slim neck, its frets tarnished, the wood
worn by years of fingers pressing chords and picking notes. The body of
the Madeira is shaped like an enormous yellow pear, one that was slightly
damaged in shipping. The blond wood has been chipped and gouged to
gray, particularly where the pick guard fell off years ago.
No, it's not a beautiful instrument, but it still lets me make music,
and for that I will always treasure it.

Indonesia

Indonesia is the place where I can st and and live. It is a country in

Southeast Asia and Oceania. Indonesia, as I know it well, is an
archipelago comprising at around 17,000 islands. It has 33 provinces with
over 230 million people, including myself and is the world's fourth most
populous country.
I stand for years here, wasting my time to work hard for its beauty.
This country is too much perfect to live in, especially the nation's capital
city, Jakarta, the city in which I fall in love.
The country shares land borders with Papua New Guinea, East
Timor, and Malaysia; but no borders of my heart with Indonesia at all. All
people know that other neighboring countries of Indonesia are Singapore,
Philippines, Australia, and the Indian territory of the Andaman and
Nicobar Islands. All of them are only neighbors which do not really love it
as well as I do.
With its islands, Indonesia gives me many friends from distinct
ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups. The Javanese are the largestand
the politically dominantethnic group. Due to Nationalism, I and my
friends will always get together for sharing identity defined by a national
language, ethnic diversity, religious pluralism, within a majority Muslim
population.
I will hold this country with the real spirit and power with its
national motto, "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" ("Unity in Diversity"
literally, "many, yet one"), articulates the diversity that shapes the
country.
Despite its large population and densely populated regions,
Indonesia has vast areas of wilderness that support the world's second
highest level of biodiversity. The country is richly endowed with natural
resources, yet poverty remains widespread.

Started by exploring the beach, and the sea using rented boat. Then we

My Grandpas Funeral in Toraja
Last month my family and I went to Toraja to attend Grandpas
funeral. It was my first time to go to such a ceremony. We gathered there
with our kin in the ceremony.
Overall, the ceremony was quite elaborate. It took about a week.
Several days before the ceremony was done, grandpas body was kept in
a series of houses arranged in a circular row around an open field called
tongkonan. His corpse was dressed in a fi ne wearing.
The funeral was performed in two phases. First, we slaughtered the
pigs and buffaloes, and then moved the corpse to face north. In this
ceremony we wore black clothes. After that, the corpse was placed in a
sandal wood coffin. Then, it was brought out of the house and placed on
an open platform beneath the granary. Meanwhile, my uncle, my brother,
and I prepared the wooden puppet and a funeral tower called lakian. The
next phase of the ceremony was held in this place. The coffin is borne
from the house and placed in the lakian. During the day, there were also
buffalo matches. They were great matches. In the night, we were
feasting, chanting, and dancing.
On the last day, the grandpas coffin were lowered from the funeral
tower and brought up to the mountain side family graveyard. It was
followed by great shouting and excitement from the relatives and the
guests. Finally, we installed the wooden puppet on a high balcony where
other puppets representing the members of a whole family were already
there. The funeral ceremonies made my family and me tired. However,
we were grateful because it ran smoothly.

A Study Tour To Bali
I was in senior high school when at the first time I went to Bali Island.
I went there with my teachers and my friends. It was a study tour
actually. My teacher, me class friends, and I were in the same bus. We left
our school at 8 a.m.
The journey from Pati to Bali took a day. I was so exhausted because
I had to sit along the journey. Actually, it was a funny journey because I
spent all of my time with my friends, like playing games, laughing, and
kidding. But I felt that all of my tiredness gone all of sudden when we
arrived at the Sanur Beach. It was still morning, I saw a sun rise which
was so beautiful. Then we were drove to the hotel to take a rest and had
meals. After that, we went to the Nusa Dua Beach. There were so many
activities to do there. We could play parasailing, banana boat, and so on.
But I chose to go to a little island which had a lot of reptile there. There
were snake, turtles, etc. The scenery was so beautiful because I was in
the middle of the sea! Next, we went to Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK).
There were two statues which were so big. They were Wisnu and his bird,
called Garuda. I was interested in its relief on the rock but, actually, I did
not know the story on it. At last, we went to the Sosro Company. We
learned a lot of things there from the first step till the end of making a
tea. After that, we went back to Pati.
After a very long journey, through the land and the sea, I learned
something about nature and human products. Although it took a lot of my
energy, I felt so happy because I spent all of my time with my friends.

I Lost My Wallet
On Sunday, I went down town to do some shopping in one of the best
shopping centers. It is called Vitun Maret.
I bought a lot of things; snacks, health product, and some clothes. I was
very happy because that day everything was 20% off. I spent around 500
thousand rupiahs.
After about an hour I was wondering in, I decided to leave and went to a
restaurant nearby to have lunch. I ordered my lunch and for the desert. I
had some ice cream. I enjoyed my meals and asked for the check. Did
you know what happened? I was so surprised when I tried to get my

I felt so stupid and did not know what to do next. Fortunately, I still kept
some in the pocket of my shirt. Using the payphone available there, I
tried to call my parents at home. Fortunately they were at home and
promised to come soon. No more than 20 minutes, they got in. then the
check was paid. After that, we went home with some goods in my

Scary Experience
I saw a horor film at Galaxy cinema last night. It was Pulau Hantu
playing on. I read the poster on newspaper yesterday. It made me curious
to see the film.
I went to the cinema alone. I went there by a bicycle. I was 8.00
when I arrived there. There had been many people queuing up to get the
tickets. I came into the cinema soon after I got my ticket. I had my seat
on the forefront. And at 8.30 the movie was played on.
After the movie was over, I left the cinema quickly. My watch
showed 11.30 pm as I got on my bicycle. I pedaled hard on my bicycle
and was soon speeding home. My thought went back to the movie I had
just seen. It was a scary story. I could remember clearly a woman
screaming as she was being attached by a ghost. Somehow that frightful
scene stayed in my mind. And I could not forget it.
The road was dark and quiet. I had to pass a graveyard on the
way home. As I approached the graveyard. I heard some sounds behind
me. I was frightened and began to cycle faster. The sound came nearer
and nearer. Then I heard a familiar voice calling me. I looked back and
saw Suzana, my classmate. He had also seen the movie and was
frightened too. She had cycled after me so that she would not be alone.
Both of us laughed out loud over our behavior.
We went home together. We pedaled our bicycle calmly. We both
went not scared any more.

A Trip at The Beach
Last week my friend and I were bored after three weeks of holidays, so
we rode our bikes to Smith Beach, which is only five kilometres from
where I live.
When we arrived at the beach, we were surprised to see there was hardly
anyone there. After having a quick dip in the ocean, which was really
cold, we realized one reason there were not many people there. It was
also quite windy.
After we bought some hot chips at the takeaway store nearby, we rode
our bikes down the beach for a while, on the hard, damp part of the
sand. We had the wind behind us and, before we knew it, we were many
miles down the beach. Before we made the long trip back, we decided to
paddle our feet in the water for a while, and then sit down for a rest.
While we were sitting on the beach, just chatting, it suddenly dawned on
us that all the way back, we would be riding into the strong wind.
When we finally made it back home, we were both totally exhausted! But
we learned some good lessons that day.

Before lunch we went for a ride on the elephant. It was a thrill to ride it.
Dad nearly fell off when he let go of the rope.
During lunch we fed some birds in the park. In the afternoon we saw the
animals being fed.
When we returned home we were tired but happy because we had so
much fun.

My Busy Holiday
On April 16th, 2010, I thought this would be a great holiday for me
because that was the holy day for Hindhu people . I was so tired about
the study, so I guessed this time I could get full refresh anyway. However,
the fact said the other way.
First like an ordinary daughter, I had to get up early morning helping
my mother, of course after I prayed. Then I did my chores, cleaned up my
room, and spread out my bed under the sun ray. I was really in danger if
my mom knew that my room was messy. So, I made it as soon as
possible. Second, my aunts called me in the afternoon. I did not meet
them for a long time, that was the way I kept for hours to talk with them.
After that, unpredictable my neighbor visited me. She asked my help
finishing her homework. At last, the time was running and I just
remembered that I had a lot of homework. I got mad, confused and
regretful why I did not check my homework before. Therefore, I did my
homework until 2:00 a.m. the next morning.
I did not feel this was holiday instead of I had to work hard and got a
long ship with my homework.

My Unfortunates

coming toward me.
When the morning broke in Sunday morning, I woke up and planned
to jog around the neighborhood. So I changed my clothes and went to the
bathroom to wash my sleepy face. As I stepped in the bathroom, I landed
my foot on a soap in the floor and feel down. A perfect morning hi for me.
Next, I began my jogging and saw my gorgeous neighbor, jogging to. I

When I got home, the breakfast already settled and I immediately

that I may have a stomachache if I ate it. It was proven, I had a

Athletics
The word Field refers to athletic sports actually done on the
field.Field events include pole vault, high jump, and long jump. The first
one is called the pole vault because the athlete uses a pole (galah) for
jumping ( vaulting ). Other sports which are usually found in a field
events are the Javelin, discus and short-put. They are what we call
lempar lembing, lempar cakram and tolak peluru respectively.

Originally the word track refered to the path (Jalur in Indonesian )

for running. Now it refers to sport held on the track itself. In U.S.A., a
track meet is what we call pertandingan olahraga lari here. Running
events include the 100 metre dash (sprint), 1500 metres and the much
longer event, the Marathon.

There is another term which is often used when we talk about

athletics. That term is decathlon. The word is derived from the word
deca and athlon. The former means ten like the word dasa in
dasawarsa . The latter means contest. The modern decathlon
consists of : (1) 100 m sprint,(2) long jump ,(3) short-put (4) high junp,(5)
400 metres sprint,(6) 110 metres hurdles,(7) discus,(8) pole vault,(9)
javelin,(10) 1,500 metres.

In the broad sense, athletic sport include cycling, team sports, and
"Track and Field" events. Cycling is one event in the Olympic games, so,
for example, are sports such as football(soccer), basketball, volley ball
and hockey, track events and field events are those which involve the
natural athletic motion of running, jumping, and throwing. These sports
are what we call athletics in the narrow sense.

Harvesting machines
Headers harvest crops such as wheat, barley and oats. These
machines are also known as combine harvesters. Headers combine the
three operations needed to harvest a crop -- reaping, threshing and
winnowing.
The comb on the front of the header cuts the heads off the stalks
(reaping). The auger pulls the heads into the machine. The stalks left
standing in the paddock are called stubble.
Threshing involves separating the grains from the head. The drum
rotates, beating the heads. Straw and chaff (bits of stalk) are fed out the
back of the header. Straw is spread over the ground. Stock can graze on
this and the standing stubble left after harvest.
There are a number of screens in the header. Grain passes over
these and fans blow the husks away. This is called winnowing. The clean
grain is stored in the box. When this is full the grain is augered out into a
chaser bin or truck.

have newspapers, but they are no longer the main sources of
information. Nowadays, we have the electronic media: the internet, radio,
and television.
The electronic media link Indonesia to the rest of the world. The
electronic media makes us part of the global village. If we want to find
out what is happening in Europe or the United States, we can listen to
satellite TV stations, such as, the BBC or CNN. We can find out what
normal people in many countries think by going on the internet. There we
can talk in English to people from all over the world.
In the twenty-first century, the internet will be the most important
source of information. Even now there is so much information on the
internet. Soon people will not buy newspapers from kiosk anymore. They
will read electronic newspapers on the internet. All television channels
will be on the internet. If you get tired of watching TVRI, you will be able
to switch to a New York channel or a channel from South Africa or Egypt.

Mainframe computers are very large computers that are stacked up
on frames. They usually have many input and output terminals

same group as lizards (the scaled group, Squamata) but form a sub-group
of their own (Serpentes).
Snakes have no legs but a long time ago they had claws to help them
slither along.
Snakes are not slimy. They are covered in scales which are just bumps on
the skin. Their skin is hard and glossy to reduce friction as the snake
slithers along the ground.
Snakes often sun bake on rocks in the warm weather. This is because
snakes are cold-blooded and they need the suns warmth to heat their
body up.
Most snakes live in the country. Some types of snakes live in trees;
some live in water, but most live on the ground in deserted rabbit
burrows, in thick, long grass and in old logs.
A snakes diet usually consists of frogs, lizards, and mice and other
snakes. The Anaconda can eat small crocodiles and even wild boars.
Many snakes protect themselves with their fangs. Boa Constrictors
can give you a bear hug which is so powerful. It can crush every single

away like the Cobra. The Flying Snakes glides away from danger. Their
ribs spread apart and the skin stretches out. Its technique is just like the

and awesome beast. But its clumsy and uncoordinated ways make it an
awkward and defensive creature. It fumbles along, pigeon-toed, in an

Only a young panda, or a panda in desperate flight, will venture to climb
a tree. And once it has reached the top, it becomes an even greater task
to get down.
Despite its aloof manner and clumsiness, the giant panda has won
a reputation as a loving and adorable creature. With its big, furry head,
gentle, flat face, and dark-ringed, sad-eyes, the giant panda is irresistible.
Its lopsided movements and its timidity have endeared it to countless

old woman. The woman handed the cloth to her. because of her kindness,
the old woman offered her a gift of pumpkins. There were two of them,
one was larger than the other. Bawang Putih was asked to choose the gift
she wanted. She wasn't greedy, there she chose the smaller one.
Returning home, the Step-Mother and Bawang Merah were furious
because Bawang Putih was late. She told them what happened from the
time her mother's cloth was washed away until her encounter with the
old woman in the cave. Her step-mother was still furious because she
was already late and only brought one small pumkin, so the mother
smashed the pumpkin to the ground. "Whack..." and the pumpkin was
broken, but it was miraculous that in the pumpkin there were beautiful
golden, jewel, and diamond ornaments. The Widow and Bawang Merah
were very schocked. They could get very rich with that much jewelry. But
greedy they were, they yelled at Bawang Putih asking why she didn't take
the large pumkin instead. In the Widow and Bawang Merah's minds, if the
larger pumpkin was taken, they should get much more jewelry.

Fulfilling their greed, Bawang Merah folowed the steps told by

Bawang Putih. She wilingly drifted her mother's cloth, walked along the
river, asked people and eventually came to the cave where the old
woman lived. Unlike Bawang Putih, however, bawang Merah refused the
old woman's order to work and She even arrogantly ordered the old
woman to give her the larger pumpkin. And so the old woman gave it to
Bawang Merah.
Bawang Merah happily brought the pumpkin that the old woman
gave, while imagining how much jewelry she would get. Returning home,
the Widow welcomed her beloved daughter. Not waiting for long, the
pumpkin was smashed to the ground, "whack ..." but instead of the
jewelry, appeared various terrifying snakes. The Widow and Bawang
Merah finally realized what they did all this time was wrong and asked
Bawang Putih to forgive them.

Descriptive Text
The Giraffes

Giraffes are truly giant animals. They amaze me. I like giraffes
because their long neck. They can grow up to 17 feet tall and weigh as
much as 3,000 pounds. The male giraffes, called bulls, are typically larger
than the females, called cows. The babies arent exactly small either. A
baby giraffe, called a calf, is 6 feet tall at birth! Giraffes also have large
hearts. Their hearts can be up to 2 feet long and weigh over 20 pounds.
They need these large hearts to pump blood all the way up their long
necks.
It is always fun to watch giraffes eat from the tree. Their favorite
types of leaves are from the acacia tree. Giraffes are herbivores, meaning
they eat plants rather than meat. They use their long necks and tongues
(which they can stick out up to a foot and a half!) to get to leaves on
trees. A typical full-grown adult giraffe will eat over 70 pounds of leaves,
twigs, and fruit each day. Giraffes dont need to drink water very often
because there is so much water in the leaves they eat. However, when
they do drink water, they can drink several gallons at a time. I think this
is not good because a giraffe has to bend down and get into a vulnerable
position when drinking. Not a good idea when there are lions sneaking
around!

Dolphins

I really interested in the dolphins. They are one of the most playful
and intelligent animals on our planet. Even though dolphins spend their
lives in the water, they are not fish, but are mammals. Dolphins cant
breathe water like fish, but need to come to the surface to breath air.
Dolphins eat other smaller fish, but they eat squid, too, and some
dolphins, like Killer Whales, will often eat small sea mammals like seals
and penguins. Dolphins often hunt together, herding fish into packed
groups or into inlets where they can be easily caught. Some dolphins will
share their food with the young or let the young catch injured prey as
practice. They dont chew their food, they swallow it whole. Dolphins get
the water they need from the animals they eat, rather than drinking
ocean water.
Dolphins have excellent eyesight and hearing. Underwater they use
echolocation. Echolocation is kind of like sonar where dolphins make a
sound and then listen to the echo. Dolphin is also tame animal that
people can play with.

Camel

The camel is the weirdest camel I ever see. it most famous for the
large humps on its back. They live in the deserts.
Camels can eat most any type of vegetation including dry, thorny,
or bitter plants that other animals may not want to eat. Their digestive
system is tough and they have been known to eat dead carcasses,
clothing, and even shoes when extremely hungry.
Camels store fat in their humps. This fat can be converted to water
and energy when they havent had food or water to drink for some time.
Once they have used up all the fat in their humps, the humps become
thin and floppy.
However what I like most about camels is their face. it looks so
funny.

Baboon

Baboons are African and Arabian Old World monkeys belonging to

the genus Papio, part of the subfamily Cercopithecinae. The five species
are some of the largest nonhominoid members of the primate order; only
the mandrill and the drill are larger. Previously, the closely related gelada
(genus Theropithecus) and the two species (mandrill and drill) of genus
Mandrillus were grouped in the same genus, and these Old World
monkeys are still often referred to as baboons in everyday speech.
Baboons are terrestrial (ground dwelling) and are found in open
savannah, open woodland and hills across Africa. Their diets are
omnivorous, but mostly herbivorous, yet they eat insects and
occasionally prey on fish, shellfish, hares, birds, vervet monkeys, and
small antelopes. They are foragers and are active at irregular times
throughout the day and night. They can raid human dwellings, and in
South Africa, they have been known to prey on sheep and goats.
Baboons in captivity have been known to live up to 45 years, while
in the wild their life expectancy is about 30 years. Baboons are able to
acquire orthographic processing skills, which form part of the ability to
read.

Rabbit

A rabbit is a small mammal with a short tail and pointed ears.

Rabbits live in burrows in the ground. Each burrow is the home of a single
family. The first fossils which can be attributed to this family came from
North America but now they are found in every part of the world.
Compared to is small body, rabbit has large sized ears.
A rabbit is a weak and timid animal and is always surrounded by
many enemies. Therefore nature has gifted it with large ears to help it to
hear even the fun of drop sound. The large area of the ear catches almost
every sound wave produced in the air and transfers them into the inner
ear. This makes the rabbit to detect its enemies in time and run to safety
zones.
Rabbit habitats include meadows, woods, forests, grasslands,
deserts and wetlands. Rabbits live in groups, and the best known species,
the European rabbit, lives in underground burrows, or rabbit holes. A
group of burrows is called a warren.
More than half the world's rabbit population resides in North
America. They are also native to southwestern Europe, Southeast Asia,
Sumatra, some islands of Japan, and in parts of Africa and South America.
They are not naturally found in most of Eurasia, where a number of
species of hares are present. Rabbits first entered South America
relatively recently, as part of the Great American Interchange. Much of
the continent has just one species of rabbit, the tapeti, while most of
South America's southern cone is without rabbits.

The way to the summit extends through some 4.8 km of passage and
starways. The design of borobudur which symbolizes the structure of
universe influences temples at Angkor, Cambodia. Borobudur temple
which is rededicated as an Indonesian monument in 1983 is a valuable
treasure for Indonesian people.

The Borobudur Temple

Indonesia has many ancient things especially the remains of the
pre-historic period, for example : tombs, temples, and fortesses. The
Borobudur temple is one of the historical remains in Sriwijaya era. Its king
was Samaratungga. It was built about in 850 B.C. King Samaratungga
was descendant from King Sailendra embraced Buddha.
The temples of Budha located in Magelang among others are
Mendut, Pawon, and Borobudur. This Borobudur is the biggest and the
most magnificent among all the temples. Several descendants, idest:

Dieng, Gebang, Sambisari, and Prambanan. Generally the temples in

Indonesia were the tomb of the King families, but the temples were built
by The King embraced Budhism used for the worship. The attractive
power of temples are not only the beauty , but also the ornaments
decorated on them, a lot of the relief on the walls including the statues.
The statue were made of rock and bronze.
Nowadays most of the bronze statues were lost. We can find the
relief although some of the parts got damage. Thus the goverment has
rehabilitated them to preserve the temples, the attraction and their
beauty. The temples have become the income resources out of the oil
and gas, because many foreign and domestic tourist visit them.

The Prambanan Temple

Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple compound in Central Java in

Indonesia, located approximately 18 km east of Yogyakarta. The temple is
a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the largest Hindu temples in
south-east Asia. It is characterised by its tall and pointed architecture,
typical of Hindu temple architecture, and by the 47m high central
building inside a large complex of individual temples.
It was built around 850 CE by either Rakai Pikatan, king of the
second Mataram dynasty, or Balitung Maha Sambu, during the Sanjaya
Dynasty. Not long after its construction, the temple was abandoned and
began to deteriorate. Reconstruction of the compound began in 1918.
The main building was completed in around 1953. Much of the original
stonework has been stolen and reused at remote construction sites. A
temple will only be rebuilt if at least 75% of the original stones are
available, and therefore only the foundation walls of most of the smaller
shrines are now visible and with no plans for their reconstruction.
The temple was damaged during the earthquake in Java in 2006.
Early photos suggest that although the complex appears to be
structurally intact, damage is significant. Large pieces of debris, including
carvings, were scattered over the ground. The temple has been closed to
the public until damage can be fully assessed. The head of Yogyakarta
Archaeological Conservation Agency stated that: it will take months to
identify the precise damage. However, some weeks later in 2006 the
site re-opened for visitors. The immediate surroundings of the Hindu
temples remain off-limits for safety reasons.

Taj Mahal, Agra, India

Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world, and
some Western historians have noted that its architectural beauty has
never been surpassed. The Taj is the most beautiful monument built by
the Mughals, the Muslim rulers of India. Taj Mahal is built entirely of white
marble. Its stunning architectural beauty is beyond adequate description,
particularly at dawn and sunset. The Taj seems to glow in the light of the
full moon. On a foggy morning, the visitors experience the Taj as if
suspended when viewed from across the Jamuna river.
Taj Mahal was built by a Muslim, Emperor Shah Jahan (died 1666
C.E.) in the memory of his dear wife and queen Mumtaz Mahal at Agra,
India. It is an "elegy in marble" or some say an expression of a "dream."
Taj Mahal (meaning Crown Palace) is a Mausoleum that houses the grave
of queen Mumtaz Mahal at the lower chamber. The grave of Shah Jahan
was added to it later. The queens real name was Arjumand Banu. In the
tradition of the Mughals, important ladies of the royal family were given
another name at their marriage or at some other significant event in their
lives, and that new name was commonly used by the public. Shah Jahan's
real name was Shahab-ud-din, and he was known as Prince Khurram
before ascending to the throne in 1628.
Taj Mahal was constructed over a period of twenty-two years,
employing twenty thousand workers. It was completed in 1648 C.E. at a
cost of 32 Million Rupees. The construction documents show that its
master architect was Ustad Isa, the renowned Islamic architect of his
time. The documents contain names of those employed and the
inventory of construction materials and their origin. Expert craftsmen
from Delhi, Qannauj, Lahore, and Multan were employed. In addition,
many renowned Muslim craftsmen from Baghdad, Shiraz and Bukhara
worked on many specialized tasks.
The Taj stands on a raised, square platform (186 x 186 feet) with its
four corners truncated, forming an unequal octagon. The architectural
design uses the interlocking arabesque concept, in which each
element stands on its own and perfectly integrates with the main
structure. It uses the principles of self-replicating geometry and a
symmetry of architectural elements.
Its central dome is fifty-eight feet in diameter and rises to a height
of 213 feet. It is flanked by four subsidiary domed chambers. The four
graceful, slender minarets are 162.5 feet each. The entire mausoleum
(inside as well as outside) is decorated with inlaid design of flowers and
calligraphy using precious gems such as agate and jasper. The main
archways, chiseled with passages from the Holy Quran and the bold
scroll work of flowery pattern, give a captivating charm to its beauty. The
central domed chamber and four adjoining chambers include many walls
and panels of Islamic decoration.

The mausoleum is a part of a vast complex comprising of a main

gateway, an elaborate garden, a mosque (to the left), a guest house (to
the right), and several other palatial buildings. The Taj is at the farthest
end of this complex, with the river Jamuna behind it. The large garden
contains four reflecting pools dividing it at the center. Each of these four
sections is further subdivided into four sections and then each into yet
another four sections. Like the Taj, the garden elements serve like
Arabesque, standing on their own and also constituting the whole.

The African Elephant

The African Elephant is described as the Loxodonta africana of Africa.

They are very large, grey, four-legged herbivorous mammals. They have
almost hairless skin, a distinctive long, flexible, prehensile trunk. Its
upper incisors form long curved tusks of ivory. African elephants have
large fan-shaped ears and two fingers at the tip of its trunk, compared
to only one in the Asian species. Furthermore, the Indian Elephant is
described as Elephas maximus of south-central Asia. The ears of Indian
elephants are significantly smaller than African elephants.
Elephants are herbivores and eat all types of vegetation such as
grasses, leaves, fruits, and bark. The facts tell that despite the size of
ears the elephants hearing is poor, because elephants ears are used to
aid ventilation. One of the softest parts of their body is at the back of the
ears, which is called the knuckle. In a zoo, elephant trainers, called
Mahouts, use their feet to steer or give commands to the animal via the
knuckle at the back of the ears.

The African Lion

Lions are the only cats that live in groups, which are called prides.
Prides are family units that may include up to three males, a dozen or so
females, and their young. All of a pride's lionesses are related, and
female cubs typically stay with the group as they age. Young males
eventually leave and establish their own prides by taking over a group
headed by another male.
Only male lions boast manes, the impressive fringe of long hair that
encircles their heads. Males defend the pride's territory, which may
include some 100 square miles (259 square kilometers) of grasslands,
scrub, or open woodlands. These intimidating animals mark the area with
urine, roar menacingly to warn intruders, and chase off animals that
encroach on their turf.
Female lions are the pride's primary hunters. They often work
together to prey upon antelopes, zebras, wildebeest, and other large
animals of the open grasslands. Many of these animals are faster than
lions, so teamwork pays off.
After the hunt, the group effort often degenerates to squabbling
over the sharing of the kill, with cubs at the bottom of the pecking order.
Young lions do not help to hunt until they are about a year old. Lions will
hunt alone if the opportunity presents itself, and they also steal kills from
hyenas or wild dogs.
Lions have been celebrated throughout history for their courage and
strength. They once roamed most of Africa and parts of Asia and Europe.
Today they are found only in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, except for one
very small population of Asian lions that survives in India's Gir Forest.
