Why the language is considered as a socio cultural resource?

Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are
going.
-Rita Mae Brown

Colombia is a pluricultural country. About 65 language are spoken across the country, yet most
people can only speak one language, Spanish, and have no clue about the names of the other 60
plus languages. My case is not different, I can only speak Spanish, and I learned Dutch and
English knowing the cultures of where these languages are spoken more than own where I have
65 languages. However, there are good news and bad news, my neighbor does not know those
other 60 plus languages that we have in our country, the good news is that I am not the only one,
the bad news is that millions like me do not know that either. However, there is room for
improvement after knowing about the Wayuu Culture and others
The reason why language is a socio cultural resource is because it is essence of a culture, it is
what makes the world know about different societies. We have all heard and read that cultures
involves belief, traditions, foods, religion, etc. Language whether it come written or orally is a
book and its pages tell the story of the people, it tells you where the come from and where they
are going.
If culture was a house, the language was the key to the front door, and all rooms inside.
-Khaled Housseini
Language contains sings, symbols, utterances, expressions. Language is what makes us unique.
There are more than 4000 languages around the world, and probably more than 4000 universes
to greet and meet. More than 4000 cultures that are different from each other and no matter how
similar they can be language make it all different. Language is a social cultural resource that
must be taken care of because it is part life. Imagine if told you, that there is flaming unicorn
flying on a sponge that has the wings of an eagle curving the surface of the triangular earth, well
you might even dump it because what I have just said makes no sense or perhaps I may have
just shaped they way you think now that you have just heard that for the first time in your life,
and now you have just imagined it. Language gives us that power to create life; the life of a
culture which is represented in its myths, legends, songs, dialects, texts, artists, etc, which gives
birth to one of the most representative characteristics any society, must have: Identity. So in this
regard, among all those 4000 languages, almost 50 million people in Colombia share Spanish
with other 300 million people around the world, yet just because we all speak Spanish does not
mean we are the same, la llorona, la madre monte, el hombre caiman, la piragua, el san
juanero, Gabriel Gacia marquez have built up our identity and all through one thing, language.
This is why a language is a socio cultural resource.
Tell me how much a nation knows about its own language, and I will tell you how much that
nation knows about its own identity.
-John Ciardi
