A DARING robbery at a crowded Penang mall on the Saturday before the Chinese New Year
sent shoppers scrambling for the exits.
Shoppers milling outside the shopping mall after the incident.
Three men, two armed with pistols and one with an AK-47 assault rifle, burst into a goldsmith's
shop at a shopping mall in Seberang Jaya close to 9pm.
They shot dead an unarmed security guard and evaded a police manhunt by melting away into
the crowd, reported The Star.
Police later found the Russian-made AK-47 in a dumpster, reported Guang Ming Daily News.
Police said the robbers, who were all wearing crash helmets, entered the mall through a side
entrance.
They barged into a goldsmith shop and ordered the employees to fill up their bags with
RM300,000 ($130,000) worth of jewellery, reported the New Straits Times
It is believed that when the robbers rushed out five minutes later, they panicked on seeing a
uniformed guard employed by the mall.
The guard was on patrol near the shop.
Gunshots rang out and the guard went down - witnesses counted six or seven shots - and
shoppers started running for the exits.
The victim, 42-year-old N Rajendran, died instantly from a gunshot wound to his neck.
The New Straits Times reported that a source speculated that the guard was shot at because
robbers thought the walkie-talkie in his hand was a gun.

As rumours spread that the robbers might be somewhere in the mall, tenants slammed down their
shop shutters and shoppers hid in dark corners.
Eyewitness Shen Wei Liang, who was having dinner with his son when he heard the gun shots
said: 'I thought it was a Chinese New Year song until I saw people running up the escalators in
panic.'
Sensing something was amiss, Mr Shen hid with his son under a chair.

PANIC RUN
From his hiding place, he saw shoppers running for the exits and heard the security guards
shouting for shoppers to take cover inside shops.
With his son in tow, he dashed into a cafe, already crammed with 50 to 60 other panicked people.
Waiters slammed the shutters behind him.
Within minutes of the robbery, about six or seven police cars arrived at the scene.
Officers from the elite forces, clad in bullet-proof vests, charged into the shopping centre, joining
regular police officers to search the building.
They entered the mall from two rear exits and an elevator and combed the area shop by shop for
three hours.
Shoppers were brought out from the shops group by group.
But the robbers had slipped away.
Police believe they escaped on motorcycles via the same side entrance they entered.
The dead security guard was taken to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for post-mortem.
In the aftermath of the robbery, with their cars trapped in the carpark by ambulances and police
cars, many shoppers ended up having to hitch-hike their way home.
Returning the next day, they swapped stories - and versions - of what had happened.
One man in the crowd was seen anxiously trying to talk his way through the police line back into
the mall.
He had left his shopping bags in there.

BUKIT MERTAJAM, MALAYSIA - Three armed robbers held a woman hostage before
escaping with jewellery worth RM3 million (S$1.2 million) in a daring heist which lasted less
than seven minutes at a busy hypermarket in Seberang Jaya near here.
The robbers entered the jewellery shop located on the first-floor of the hypermarket on the
pretext of buying gold chains for their wives at 2.10pm.
While the salesgirls were displaying the jewellery, the three suddenly whipped out their guns and
shouted "This is a robbery" in Hokkien.

They then ordered the salesgirls to take out the jewellery trays from the showcase and place them
in their bags.
State deputy CID chief Asst Comm Mohd Nasir Salleh, who was at the scene later, said the
robbers then held a salesgirl hostage.
"They dragged her to the ground floor before escaping on two motorcycles where their
accomplices were waiting.
"The salesgirl is still traumatised," he added.
Police believe the robbers were foreigners as they spoke Hokkien with an accent.
ACP Mohd Nasir urged members of the public to come forward to help in investigations as many
shoppers would have seen the robbers clearly as they used the escalators while fleeing.
He said the robbers were aged between 20 and 30.
He added that police have obtained the CCTV footage of the robbery.
Handphone shop salesgirl Roy MS, 35, witnessed the incident.
"It was like watching a crime drama on TV except this was real life.I was actually 10m away
from the scene.
"All of us in the shop quickly hid once we knew a robbery was taking place," she said.
Sources said this was the third time the goldsmith shop has been robbed, claiming the robbers
would normally strike on Fridays.

The incident occurred about 10pm when the 69-year-old victim, who owns a branded sportsapparel outlet in the complex, was walking towards his car with his wife at the lower ground
level indoor car park.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Arjunaidi Mohamed said the robber tried to grab a
bag the victim was carrying and in the ensuing struggle, the victim was punched in his face.
"The victim's wife cried for help and the shouts attracted the attention of other shoppers. One of
the shoppers contacted police while the suspect fled empty-handed."
The suspect acted alone. He was not masked or armed.
Arjunaidi said police were checking closed-circuit television camera footage to identify the
suspect.
He visited the shopping complex yesterday to discuss how to improve security. More CCTVs
facing the exits may be set up.
1 Utama's security and safety operations manager Santa Singh said they had 200 guards,
including 120 assigned to the parking areas.

"We believe the suspect thought the victim was carrying a lot of cash and targeted him."
The incident was the fourth reported attack at shopping complex car parks in the Klang Valley in
the past two months.
The previous incidents were at the car park of The Curve and Mid Valley Megamall shopping
complexes. One incident was reported at a car park outside 1 Utama. In all three cases, the
victims were women.
On May 27, an Internet marketeer was abducted by two men at The Curve. She escaped by
jumping out of her car. A week later, a woman outside 1 Utama was driven at knife-point to a
nearby automated teller machine to withdraw money.
On June 22, a woman was slashed and robbed by a man at the Mid Valley Megamall car park.

Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Arjunaidi Mohamed confirmed that police had received a report
on the incident.
The management of 1Utama, on its Facebook page, thanked shoppers for their positive
comments and encouraging words for the mall's security team.

They, however, reminded shoppers to always be vigilant and to help each other in ensuring
safety at the shopping centre.
In SHAH ALAM, Selangor CID chief SAC Mohd Adnan Abdullah said the four suspects had
been remanded and that the police would investigate their modus operandi.
The security guards suspected something amiss when they noticed the four men waiting in a
Proton Wira at the parking bay.
When the guards approached them, they sped off. However, they failed to escape.
Meanwhile, SAC Mohd Adnan said the police had concluded their probe into the death of TV9
administrative executive Syaleza Jaffar. He, however, declined to give details.

recorded from 23 others.
