Relevance and benefits of OJT in ECE field

In my two months of internship in Affiliated Electronics Service

Corporation (ASERCO), I learned a great deal of things. Examples of the things I
learned or honed are cooperation, subordination, leadership, social discipline in
handling different kinds of people like customers, coworkers, and supervisors,
and etc. These things are indeed essential for an individual to have in order to
work efficiently in a real working environment. These are examples of things
that I acquired during my internship in ASERCO.

In ASERCO, we are mostly concern in dealing with printer problems.

ASERCO is a certified service center for EPSON and Canon printers. Sadly, we
were mostly dealing with general problems. It was very rare for us to encounter
printers that had problems with their electronics component like the
mainboard. Nevertheless, there were cases like this. When we had cases like
this, these are the times where we were able to practice and apply our
knowledge in the field of electronics. There were times where we had to solder
the main board mostly because the fuse was busted and we had to short the
connection in order to test the main board. There were cases where we had to
de-solder parts of the main board in order to fix the intermitted power problem
of the board.
All those little things were at the very least beneficial to me as a future
part of the electronics industry because, I was able to hone my skills in
familiarizing, identifying, troubleshooting and fixing the different components of
different boards from different electronic products. I was able to obtain these
things through my internship in ASERCO.

Recommendations and Suggestions

I do not recommend this company for its internship program. There are a
couple of reasons why. First thing I am going to discuss is, this company mainly
focuses in fixing printers. And mining electronics-related knowledge and skills
in repairing printers is not a bountiful one. Mostly one will find themselves just
able to dismantle and assemble printer parts. And thats because those are the
things that are mostly the cause of the discontinuation of the product.
Secondly, the technicians in this company does not explain electronics-related
problems and is often mostly concerned about your ability to lift heavy objects
so that they can ask you to do their bidding. Lastly, there were a lot of things
that they asked us to do, but none of them were electronics related. Its as if
they were just using interns as additional manpower.

My suggestions to upcoming interns are, they should never settle for less
like we did. Research more and ask around for people with experience in
internship. Well at the very least I now know how it feels to dislike your job. And
its a lesson for me not to settle for less.
