1.1 Welcome to Nero Express 7

Welcome to the world of CD/DVD burning! Thank you for your purchase of Nero
Express 7 one of the easiest and most reliable CD/DVD recording packages to
help store your data, music, and video on CD or DVD.
With our state-of-the-art technology and nonstop drive for improving our software,
we are continuously implementing the latest know-how, to do our part in making
sure that your burning experience is easy and trouble-free.
As you read this step-by-step instruction guide, it will assist you in creating your
first disc whether it is Data, Audio, DVD-Video, Video, or SVCD. You will soon
see how easy the process can be and you will shortly be on your way to making
your first disc!
Nero AG realized that not everyone is a long time user or an expert their first time
burning a CD/DVD and many users needed a little help with their first recording.
So with this understanding, the Users Guide was created with the very new
users in mind.
Nero Express 7 is an assistant-driven application for burning CDs/DVDs based
on the main application Nero Burning ROM 7. With the main essentials included
such as data, audio, copy, and video, it will also work with the DVD-RW, and
DVD+RW drives.
You are able to record MP3s, archive your favourite photos, among the many
features of this software.
If you are a user of Nero Burning ROM 7, Nero Express 7 is automatically
integrated. For details about Nero Burning ROM 7, please see the Nero
Burning ROM 7 manual.

Nero 7 comes in Premium and Essential versions. Nero 7 Premium is the full
version you receive if you buy the retail package or purchase online in the Nero 7
Web store. Nero 7 Essential is a slimmed-down version supplied with the
purchase of a recorder and does not contain the full range of features of Nero 7
Premium. Owners of Nero 7 Essential can quickly and easily switch to Nero 7
Premium by purchasing a cost-effective upgrade.

Nero Express 7 differs from the full version of Nero Express 7, both in relation
to the types of compilation possible, and in the software's range of functions:

2.1 System Requirements

To install Nero Express 7 you need administrator rights for all operating
systems later than Windows 2000.

InCD and Nero ImageDrive work in the x86 emulator that allows 32-bit

! Windows Media Center Edition 2004 or higher
Hardware
! Your PC should have an 800 Mhz Intel Pentium 3 processor or AMD
Sempron 2200+ processor at least.
! You must have at least 128 MB RAM memory. Generally, more would be
better.
! 600 MB hard drive space for standard installation of all components.
! Up to 9 GB free hard drive space for DVD images and temporary files.
! The hard disk access time should be less than 19 milliseconds
! Graphics card with at least 8 MB video memory, minimum resolution of
800x600 pixels and high color of 16 bits. True colour with 24 or 32 bits is
recommended however.
! We recommend that Nero Express 7 will be most comfortable to work with in
a screen resolution of 1024x768 or greater.
! At least 800 MB free disk space is required on the hard drive for saving CD
images and up to 9 GB for DVD images and temporary files.

2.2 Installing Nero Express 7

Step 1: Insert the Nero Express 7 CD-ROM into your CD/DVD drive on your PC.
If you have a feature called 'Autorun' activated, this will start your installation
process automatically.
If the program does not automatically start, select the CD/DVD drive containing
the Nero Express 7 CD in the Windows Explorer. Double-click on 'setup.exe' in
the root directory of the disc to manually start the installation routine.
Step 2: Follow prompts until you are finished installing the software.

Step 1: Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
! In some operating systems, you will find - Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Step 2: Select Nero Express 7 in the Add or Remove Programs window and
click 'Remove'.
Step 3: In some cases, you will find that when removing software, there will be
one or two files that the operating system will ask if you want them removed since
they may be shared by other programs. If you are unsure, always opt to keep
these files.

3.1 Launching the program

Depending on the version, you can open up the software program as follows:
a. Start >(All) Programs > Nero > Nero 7 Premium > Audio / Data > Nero
Express.
b. Start >(All) Programs > Nero > Nero 7 Ultra Edition > Audio / Data > Nero
Express.
c. Start > (All) Programs > Nero > Nero OEM 7 > Audio / Data > Nero Express.
The path how to open Nero Express 7 described above can differ in some
versions.

The compilation window for data discs is shown below. The compilation window
for Audio CDs, Video CDs and Super Video CDs differs slightly from this window.
The differences are explained in the relevant chapters.

Selecting a recorder
If there are a number of recorders installed, you can select the desired recorder
in the advanced settings area.
Step 1: Start Nero Express 7 and click on the

Activating the image recorder

If you would like to activate the image recorder in addition to the installed
recorders, you can do so in the advanced settings area. With the image recorder
you can create an image file and later burn it. If the image recorder is active you
can also select a compilation that would not be possible using the installed
recorder, i.e. with a CD recorder you can also select a DVD compilation and save
it as an image file.
Step 1: Start Nero Express 7 and open the advanced settings area by clicking
on the

Step 1: Start Nero Express 7, select a compilation and add the files to be
burned. Click on 'Next' to go to the burn window.
Step 2: Check the burn settings, insert a disc in the selected recorder and click
on 'Burn' to start the burn process.

Step 3: Once the burn process finishes you will see a message about the
outcome. Click on 'OK' to close the window.
Step 4: You can both print and save the log. To do so, click on the appropriate
button and carry out the necessary steps. Click on 'Next' to go to the finish dialog.

Step 5: A dialog containing various options will appear after the burn process
finishes. Select the desired option or click on

3.5 Switching to Nero Burning ROM 7

After Nero Express 7 starts, you can switch to Nero Burning ROM 7 in the
advanced settings area before you select a compilation. Nero Burning ROM 7
offers additional functions and options.
If you are a first time user of software burning products, may we suggest you start
first with Nero Express 7. As you gradually become familiar with the burning
technology, you can switch over to Nero Burning ROM 7 for a more powerful
user interface and additional features.

3.6 Structure of the advanced settings area
Clicking on the
button in Nero Express 7 opens the advanced settings area
containing additional functions. The functions and options offered in this area
depend on the Nero Express 7 window. The 'Advanced' area, however, is
available in all windows.

Clicking on the
icon opens the options area containing various tabs that you
can use to customize Nero Express 7. For further information, see the chapter
'Configuration options'.

Saving audio tracks

Clicking on the
icon when there is an audio CD inserted opens a save dialog
that enables you to copy individual audio tracks or the entire disc to the hard
drive. During this copy process the audio tracks will be converted to the format
you specify. In addition to copying the audio tracks you can also play them back.
Insert a non-copy-protected audio CD in the drive, click on

drive containing the audio CD with the tracks to be copied.

Output file format Select the type of format you would like to save your audio
file as.
Settings Select the setting options for converting the audio tracks. The setting
dialog depends on the selected format. Below is the setting dialog that appears
when converting to Nero Digital Audio (HE-AAC).
Path Select the place on your hard drive in which you will save your audio file.
File name creation method Type in the name of your audio file by checking
'User Defined' or select 'Manual' for the default name.

Options A drop-down box will appear when the 'Options' button is clicked.
Jitter correction - Jitter correction synchronizes the data information by

overlapping the sectors and therefore no gaps are created.
Remove silence Removes the silences at the end of each audio track.
Automatically generate an M3U playlist of stored audio tracks This option
will automatically generate a playlist of all the audio tracks that are stored on your
hard disk or CD reading device.
Read speed Select the speed in which your CD device will read the files.

Erase Disc
Clicking on the
icon opens a dialog for erasing rewritable discs.
Select recorder If there are a number of recorders installed, you must select
the desired one.
Use Multiple Recorders (option only available in the retail package) Erase
discs in multiple recorders attached to your PC.

Select the erasure method to be used:

Quick-erase rewritable media The disc will be erased quickly. The media will
appear to be empty but the data is not physically erased. The table of contents is
left on the disc.
Full-erase rewritable media The disc will be erased completely. This option will
fully erase all data on the media. This procedure will take some time.
Choose erase speed Select the erase speed.

Clicking on the
icon shows the contents of the inserted disc.
The total capacity and available capacity will be shown in addition to the sessions
and tracks.

Nero Cover Designer

Clicking on the
icon opens Nero Cover Designer.
Included with your version of Nero Express 7 is the Nero Cover Designer with
which you are able to create covers and labels for your CDs and DVDs using
pre-designed templates or your own designs.
When launched from or after a Data, Audio or Audio and Data project in Nero
Express 7, the contents will be automatically imported, saving you the
annoyance of having to manually type them in.

4.1 Creating a data disc

If you have a recorder installed that can burn DVDs, you can burn both data CDs
and data DVDs. If you have a CD recorder, you can only burn data CDs (the
option for burning DVDs is grayed out). However you can also create a
compilation for a data DVD if you select the image recorder.
Step 1: From the project selection page, select 'Data' > 'Data CD' or 'Data DVD'.

The window opens in which the files to be burned are added.
Step 2: Click the

button to select the files you would like to burn.
A window will appear that looks very similar to Windows Explorer and from here,
you are able to choose the files you would like to record and save on disc. Once
you have selected your file(s), please click 'Add'. Once you have selected all of
the files, click on 'Close' to close the window.
Step 3: Once all your files have been added, click 'Next' to prepare your disc for
burning. For more information on how to do this, please read the chapter 'Burning
a disc'.

4.2 For Advanced Users

4.2.1
Directories on the disc to be burned

You can also create directories on the disc, for example for sorting the tracks. A
number of icons are provided above the compilation window for this purpose.
Clicking on this icon switches to the next highest directory. If the icon is
grayed-out it means there is no higher-level directory and so there can be
no switch.
Clicking on this icon creates a new directory.
Clicking on this icon displays the compilation structure as a directory tree.

Hide Files
If you would like to 'Hide' files on your CD/DVD for extra added security or
protection, this can easily be done from the project window.
Step 1: Right-mouse click on the file in your project window and select
'Properties'.
An additional window will appear with information on your file and the option to
check 'Hide' to conceal your file.

Selectively adding files for burning

Step 1: When you click on the
button in the compilation window
to select the files to be burned, the file selection dialog opens.
Step 2: You can either go to the directory and select the files and repeat this until
all of the desired files have been added or you can start a search and add the
results.

Step 3: Enter the search term in the 'Search Query' field and click on the 'Search'
button to start the search. The results will be shown in the 'Results' field. For a
better overview you can also separate the results according to audio, photo and
video files.

repeating steps 1 and 2.

Step 2: Select the saved search whose search criteria you would like to change
and click on the 'Edit' button.

5.1 Creating an audio CD

An Audio CD is a CD that contains music files and that can be played with any
regular CD player which you can buy in a store the songs on the CD must
either be in CDA format or be converted to this format.
Step 1: Start Nero Espress 7 and select the 'Music' > 'Audio CD' option in the
project selection dialog.

For Advanced Users

The compilation window contains two check boxes for basic options and you can
also read off the length of the audio CD.
Normalize all audio files: This check box activates a filter that equalizes the
volume of the audio tracks to be burned. This is particularly recommended if the
audio tracks to be burned are from different sources, as the differences in volume
may then be significant.
No pause between tracks: This check box defines whether there should be a
pause of 2 seconds between the tracks on the audio CD or whether the tracks
should transition from one to the next without pause as is the case with live
recordings.

'Properties' button
The 'Properties' button is active if an audio track is selected. Clicking on this
button opens a dialog containing additional options. The buttons in this dialog
have the following functions.
OK: Save the changes and close the window.
Cancel: Close the window without accepting the changes.
Apply: Save the changes but leave the window open.

On this tab you can find out basic information about the track and also edit the
properties of the audio file.

Text is additional information on audio CDs that displays

the name of the CD, the individual songs and the artist on
CD players that support this function. In this field enter
the name of the CD.
Artist
In this field enter the artist's name.
Pause
In this field enter the length of the pause between the

audio tracks. You can specify whether the pause should
be measured in seconds or frames in the drop-down list .
International
Standard
Recording Code
Please leave this field empty if you do not have an ISRC

code. ISRC is a digital code for sound recordings and is
inaudibly carried in the subcode of digital recordings.

Protection
If activated, a copyright flag will be set. This flag is of no

significance when burning the audio track, however it
could theoretically happen that certain CD players will not
play audio tracks with a copyright flag.
Crossfade with
previous track
When applied, this feature will blend the audio tracks

together. You can specify the amount of seconds you
would like to blend in-between each track
Indexes, Limits, Split Tab

On this tab you can set and delete indexes as well as split tracks to make one
long track into two or more shorter tracks.

The audio track is displayed in graphical form in this area.

Clicking on this button selects a new index entry. If you set

indexes you can later scroll through them on the audio player
to quickly find the desired audio range.

Clicking on this button opens a dialog in which the position of

the selected index can be entered in greater detail.

Clicking on this button deletes the selected index.
Split
Clicking on this button splits the track at the selected position

to turn one track into two.
Play
Clicking on this button starts playback of the track from the

selected position.

Clicking on this button splits the track at all of the index

Clicking on this button displays the entire track in graphical

'Filter' tab
If you are unhappy with the quality of your audio tracks, Nero Burning ROM 7
offers a range of filters can enhance the quality of the music tracks or change the
tracks. The tracks are edited 'non-destructively' which means that the actual
recording is not affected and only selections are set. The big advantage of the
non-destructive method is that editing steps can be undone at any time and no
additional audio data are created as you work. The audio files are not actually
changed until they are written.

standard volume. It may be useful to adjust the volumes of
several tracks that were read from different sound input
devices.

This filter can be used to remove click/pop/crackle sounds

like those that are caused by old scratched LPs.
Hiss Reduction
This filter reduces the hiss level of a given sound. It will

remove all audio in all frequencies that are below a certain
threshold (hiss level). If audio has a constant background
hiss then it can be 'noise gated' or removed completely.
Fade In
This filter will gradually fade and blend tracks from silence to
full volume. Its especially useful to shorten tracks.
Fade Out
This filter will gradually fade out tracks from full volume to
silence. Its especially useful to shorten tracks.
Stereo
This filter allows you to enhance or reduce the stereo effect

of an audio track. The filter will only have an effect if the

original track is already recorded in stereo. It will leave mono
tracks unchanged.
Karaoke
This filter can be used to eliminate the vocals of a song. It

works by removing those parts of the song that are equal on
both stereo channels.

track.
Equalizer
This filter allows you to change the frequency, gain, bass,

and treble in your audio track.
5.2 Creating special audio discs

In addition to the option of creating audio CDs that can be played on any CD
player, with Nero Express 7 you can also create discs in special audio formats
(Nero Digital, MP3, WMA). Unlike audio CDs, which can only be created using
CDs, both CDs and DVDs can be burned using the other audio formats.
Please note that Nero Express 7 does not convert the audio tracks when
creating these discs; the tracks already exist in the appropriate format. This
therefore means that you can only burn MP3 files with an MP3 disc, for
example.

Technically speaking, a special audio disc is a data disc. If, however, this disc
contains exclusively audio files it can also be called an audio disc. For you as a
user this means that you can also burn a disc containing MP3, WMA as well as
Nero Digital Audio files. To do so, simply select a data disc and add audio files
in the desired formats.
All of the tips and instructions for data discs contained in the chapter 'For
Advanced Users' apply to special audio discs also and are therefore not
described here again.

Copying a disc
8.1 Copying a disc

Unless you own the copyright or have the permission of the copyright holder,
the unauthorized copying of discs can represent a violation of national or
international laws and may result in serious penalties.
If you have a recorder installed that can burn DVDs, you can copy both CDs and
DVDs. If you have a CD recorder, you can only copy CDs (the option for copying
DVDs is grayed out). However you can also copy a DVD using a CD recorder if
you select the image recorder and select the DVD as an image file.
Step 1: Select the 'Image, Project, Copy' > 'Copy Entire CD' or 'Copy Entire DVD'
option in the project selection dialog.

drive connected, click on the drop-down list and select the desired drive.
Source drive: Insert the disc to be copied in this drive.
Destination drive: Insert the empty disc in this drive.
Options: Clicking on this button opens an information window and displays
information on the selected recorder such as the disc types that this recorder can
burn.
Quick copy: This option is only available if there are at least two drives
connected. Activate this option if the data should be copied directly from the
source drive to the target drive. This method does not require any memory space
on the hard drive.
If this box is checked, a direct copy will be created. Select this option if you do not
have much time or if you have too little space on the hard drive for an image file.
If this box is not checked, an image file will be created first and the image file
then burned. Select this option if you would like to burn multiple copies of the
disc, want the best possible reproduction of the original disc, have enough space
on the hard drive for an image file or have enough time.
Writing speed: Click on the drop-down list if you would like to change the writing
speed and select another available speed.
Number of copies: Click in this field if you would like to change the number of
copies and enter the desired number.
Verify data on disc after burning: Activate this option if you would like to verify
whether the burned data is identical with the original data. After the burn process,
Nero Express 7 ejects the burned disc and reloads it.
Image File: If an image file of the original disc is created first, then this field

With certain compilations you have the option of creating a

multisession disc. This means that the disc does not have

(multisession disc) to be written in one session (as with audio CDs and DVD
videos, for example), instead it can be written in a number
of sessions until it is full. Check this box if you would like to
create a multisession disc. Do not check the box if you do
not want to create a multisession disc and the disc should
be finalized so that no further data can be written to it.

Check this box if the files should be verified after burning.

In this way you can ensure that the burned files have been
correctly written and the disc does not contain any errors.
After the data has been written to the disc, Nero
Express 7 ejects the disc and reloads it. After this, all the
files in the compilation are compared and Nero Express 7
checks whether the files have been written correctly. In
multisession compilations, Nero Express 7 checks only
those files which were written during the most recent
burning process and ignores all other files. At the end of
the check, Nero Express 7 displays a summary. This
contains the information from the checking process: the
number of identical files, the number of different files and
the number of files which could not be accessed.

can create and print labels, inlays and booklets. If you have a LightScribecompatible recorder installed, you can additionally print a LightScribe label using
Nero Cover Designer.

9.3.1
Additional burn options
If you click on the button in the burn dialog, the advanced settings area of the
burn dialog will open.
Write Speed
This drop-down box contains the write speeds supported by the recorder you
have selected. This field is only displayed when you select a physical recorder
and not the Image Recorder.
Write Method
There are two alternative methods available for burning media: 'Disc-at-once'
(DAO) and 'Track-at-once' (TAO).
Disc-at-once
With 'Disc-at-once', the whole medium is written in one go without deactivating
the laser. In the 'Disc-at-once/96 (DAO/96) process, more data is written, which
can produce better results for actions such as copying CDs.
Track-at-once
With 'Track-at-once', every track is written individually, which means that the
laser is switched off after every track.
Audio, Video and Super Video CDs should always be burned using Disc-atonce even though it is also possible to select Track-at-once. We do not
recommend using Track-at-once. It is better to use Disc-at-once/96 for copying
CDs.

Finalize CD
When a CD is finalized, it is locked and can no longer be burned. Depending on
the type of medium you are burning, this is a necessary process which enables
the medium to be used to the full extent. All the options are correctly set in Nero
Express 7s default settings.
Determine maximum speed
The speed test determines how quickly the compiled files can be accessed. If the
access speed is slower than the burning speed, the burning speed is reduced so
as to avoid a buffer underrun.
It is not necessary to run the speed test when using recorders with buffer
underrun protection.
Simulation
The simulation runs all the steps involved in burning a medium apart from
activating the laser beam, so that you can assume that if the simulation is
successful, the burning process will also be successful.
We recommend running a simulation if you are decompressing data before
burning, e.g. when burning an audio CD from MP3 files. To play MP3 files on a
CD player, the files have to be converted to the corresponding format (CDA). In
Nero Burning ROM 7, this decompression takes place during the burning
process. It takes up computer time, which can result in a buffer underrun on older
systems. Pentium 3 systems or higher can decompress data and burn at high
speeds simultaneously.
You do not need to run simulations if you are using a recorder with buffer
underrun protection.
Write
This checkbox starts the actual physical burning process. If this is interrupted, the
result will be faulty and the entire medium may become unusable, depending on
the type of medium. Only recorders with buffer underrun protection can continue
to burn in such cases.

Book Type
The Book Type field on a DVD helps the DVD player to identify the type of disc
that has been inserted and to determine how compatible it is with the player. With
some DVD recorders, Nero Express 7 can change the Book Type setting when a
DVD is burned.

recorder settings, click the Options button in the burn settings.

10.1 Image files and saved compilations

An image file is the exact copy of the data on a disk. You can burn copies of this
image file as often as you like. You can view the contents of the image file and
simulate one or two drives with Nero ImageDrive.
10.1.1
Creating an image file

An image file will be created if you select the image recorder instead of an
installed recorder. You can select the image recorder either before compilation of
a project or before burning.
If the image recorder is selected before compilation, you can create all
compilation types, i.e. including those not supported by your installed recorder. If
a CD recorder is installed, for example, DVD compilations cannot be created as
the recorder cannot burn these. Using the selected image recorder, on the other
hand, you can create an image file and then burn it later, i.e. following installation
of a suitable recorder.

11.2 Printing LightScribe labels

LightScribe is a process that enables CDs and DVDs to be labeled in the
recorder. This requires both a suitable burner and a special medium. The label
side of the media has a special color layer and sometimes also a thermal layer;
this is heated by the laser in the recorder in such a way that images and text are
printed on the medium. After burning the compilation, the disc is simply removed
from the recorder, turned over and the LightScribe label is created.
The create functionality for LightScribe labels follows very closely that of Nero
Cover Designer; i.e. if you have created disc labels before using Nero Cover
Designer, then you will not have any problems using LightScribe labels. For their
creation, it basically does not matter whether a label is printed on paper and then
stuck onto the medium or printed directly on the medium. You will find full details
on how to create labels in the Nero Cover Designer manual.
Creation of a LightScribe disc can be either an independent process or part of the
compilation process. Which method you choose will be a matter of preference.

Clicking on the 'OK' button closes the window, whereas clicking on the 'Print'
button starts printing the labels.

11.5 LightScribe FAQs

What is LightScribe?
LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling is a new process for labeling CDs and DVDs. It
enables private and commercial users to easily achieve professional results in
silk-screen printing quality. First of all, the data are burned on the blank disc by
laser as normal. The medium is then turned over and placed in the burner drawer
again. Using the same laser as for burning the data, a precise, iridescent label is
then produced, which can consist of any text and graphic elements. So you no
longer need to use a printer, permanent marker or self-adhesive disc labels.
How are LightScribe discs detected?
LightScribe labels can only be printed on discs having a special surface and
which have been specially made for this purpose. On insertion, LightScribe
checks whether the identification for LightScribe discs is present in the center of
the disc. If the disc is not detected, please go through the following steps:
a. Check whether you have inserted a LightScribe disc.
b. Check if the LightScribe disc is sitting correctly in the recorder with the label
side facing down.
c. Clean the center of the disc with a lint-free cloth to remove any dirt or smears.
d. Place another LightScribe disc in the recorder if the problem has still not been
cleared.
How good is the print quality?
LightScribe offers three different levels of quality: Draft, normal and best.
With each level of quality there is an improvement in the contrast of image and
text, though the time to print increases.
How fast can a LightScribe label be printed?
The time to print a LightScribe label depends on a number of factors: the amount
of data to be printed, the position of the data on the label, the selected print
quality and the disc used.
When printing labels, the LightScribe recorder burns the image and text in
concentric rings from the inner diameter to the outer diameter. Rings with no data
are skipped. The thickness of the rings determines the contrast and hence the
print quality.
What labels can I print?
Basically, there are three different label print modes:
Title: Only the name of the disc or compilation appears on the disc. This labeling
method allows the disc to be identified.
Contents: Information about the contents of the disc is printed on the disc. This is
the recommended labeling method if there are a number of discs or compilations
with the same name.
Complete: Images and text appears on the disc; these creative elements (almost)
completely fill the disc and make it unique. The format template for this labeling

method is called 'Free style'. This is the recommended labeling method for
important discs or discs with a special content.
Why should I update my LightScribe Host Software?
For various reasons, a window sometimes appears recommending an update for
the LightScribe Host Software. The commonest reasons are:
a. The installed LightScribe Host Software is faulty and needs to be reinstalled.
b. The installed LightScribe Host Software is not the correct version.
c. An attempt was made to access a disc that is not certified or is not LightScribe
compatible.
Establish an Internet connection and click 'Update'. In the window which opens,
select the option 'Save' and specify where you want the LightScribe Host
Software to be saved.
To install the update you need administrator rights for all operating systems
later than Windows 2000.
To install the update, double-click the file that you have downloaded and follow
the instructions of the Installation Wizard.
Why is only simplified (generic) printing of the label possible?
If a LightScribe disc is inserted and the LightScribe Host Software offers
simplified (generic) printing, then the printing is not optimized for that disc. For
optimal printing results, an update of the LightScribe Host Software is
recommended and the corresponding window opens.
Establish an Internet connection and click' Update'. In the window which opens,
select the option 'Save' and specify where you want the LightScribe Host
Software to be saved.
To install the update, double-click the file that you have downloaded and follow
the instructions of the Installation Wizard.

12.1 Opening tabs

In Nero Express 7 you have the possibility to change many settings in order to
configure your software for optimal use.

12.2 Compilation
You can change some of the basic settings in this tab. We recommend activating
all the checkboxes as this makes Nero Express 7 easier to work with.
12.3 Cache
This tab is where you define the drive and path for the cache, i.e. the memory in
which data is stored temporarily before and during burning. If you have more than
one hard disk installed, we recommend that you check the speed of the various
disks and use the fastest as the cache.
The speed test cannot check the speed of network drives. We therefore advise
you not to choose one of these as the cache.
12.4 Language
This tab is where all the installed languages are displayed and where you select
the language in which you want the commands and functions and all entries in
Nero Express 7 to be displayed.
12.5 Sounds
This tab is where the sounds played in connection with the various burning
actions are defined. When Nero Express 7 is installed, various sounds are
loaded, but you can also link other sounds to the burning actions.
When the checkbox is activated, the selected sound will be played. When the
checkbox is deactivated, the sound will not be played.
12.6 Audio
This directory shows the directory in which the audio plug-ins are installed.
12.7 Expert Features

As its name suggests, this tab is for expert users who have some experience with
burning media.
The Overburn option should be used with particular caution, as it can damage
your recorder. Use this option at your own risk.
For CDs burned in Disc-at-once mode, you have the option of writing a short
lead-out that creates an additional 12 MB of space.
You can restore the default settings by clicking on the 'Restore' button.
12.8 Database
Nero Express 7 enables audio CDs to be linked to a local database.
This may be a user database containing the titles that have been burned with
Nero Express 7 or a program database. The program database comes from
freedb.org and must be loaded onto your PC before use. Once you have done
this, the title of an inserted CD and the artist are (usually) recognized and will not
have to be entered manually.

12.9 Ultrabuffer
This tab allows you to specify how much memory Nero Burning ROM 7will use
as a RAM buffer. This can either be done automatically or manually. We
recommend using the Automatic Configuration option so as to achieve an
optimum relationship between the existing buffer and the buffer reserved for
burning.
When setting the buffer manually, make sure that it is not too small, as a large
buffer will produce more reliable burning results than a small one.

Q: I burn a disc, I get buffer underruns every time.
A: There could be several reasons for this. Please try the following:

Try reducing the burn speed of the recorder
Try different media brands. The one that you are using could not be
compatible with your recorder.
Update the firmware version on your recorder. Firmware is a chip inside

your recorder which acts as the brain of the device. Please check the
manufacturers website for the latest version.
Recorder or cable that is attached to it is defective.
Try using a different source to see if it is corrupted or too slow as a source.
Defragment your hard disk from time to time
During burning no other tasks should be performed by the computer
Before burning, you should always run the speed test and the simulation in
order to get the optimal speed. If not, the maximum possible write speed of
the recorder is kept as default.

Q: I am unable to make SVCD discs. I drop my video files into the window
but nothing happens.
A: In order to have your video files automatically convert to MPEG-2 SVCD
compatible files, you will need to purchase the plugin from Nero AG. Please go to

Q: I have many MP3 songs that I would like to play in my home stereo
player. How can I convert these files so that I end up with an audio CD that I
can play back?
A: When you drag and drop the MP3 songs into the Nero Express 7 Window,
they will automatically convert them for you to get them 'audio player' ready.
Q: Although I created a multi-session-disc I can only see the last session.
Why?
A: If your CD-recorder supports multi-session, you can only read the last session
of your CD on Windows 95 and NT 4.0, and the first session on Windows 3.1x.
Nero gives you another solution: in Windows 95 and NT 4.0 you can use the
Nero MultiMounter to switch to any other session of your multi-session-CD.

Q: I have installed Nero Express 7 correctly but it still does not see my
recorder?
A: It could be several reasons:
The recorder is either too old and support for this drive has been discontinued
The recorder is very new to the market and support has not yet been
implemented or is the process.
Please check to make sure that your PC recognized the recorder and that it has
been installed properly. You can go to Start > Control Panel the appropriate
menu to see if your hardware was installed correctly or not.
Please check the Nero website at www.nero.com for the latest drivers and a list
of supported recorders.
Q: I have recorded my audio CD with no problems but I am getting clicking
and hissing noises.
A: In the audio window click on your audio file and the Properties button will be
activated. Click on Options > Filters Tab. There you can control the distortion on

A/D
Analogue/Digital. The conversion of analog signals to digital characters.
AIFF
An acronym for Apple Interchange File Format. This is the music file format for
tracks that are extracted from a disc and saved to the hard drive on a Macintosh
system.
ASPI
Acronym for Advanced SCSI Programming Interface. This is the interpreter
between the software, SCSI card, and your operating system. This allows the
device to communicate with the SCSI card.
ATAPI
Part of the EIDE (Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics) interface that provides
additional commands to control a CD-ROM drive, CD-ROM recorder, hard drive,
etc
Audio CD
An audio CD is generally comprised of several tracks (titles). Discs in this format
only contain pure audio data. They can be played on commercially available
audio CD players and with the appropriate plug-in, also on a computer.
Note: Please note that when creating audio discs, there are some audio players
on the market which are not able to play re-writable discs. For this reason, you
should use CD-R discs.
Block
A block is the smallest addressable information unit on a CD-ROM. A block
corresponds to a sector.
Blue Book
This is the standard for CD's that are created in the CD-Extra and CD Enhanced
format.
Bootable CD
Booting means that the operating system is loaded on your computer. Under
normal circumstances, your PC boots from the hard drive. If you need to boot

from something else besides your hard disk for any reason, you can boot from a
floppy disk or CD. Special 'bootable CDs' must be produced to be able to boot
from your CD-ROM/CD-R/RW drive.
Bridge Disc
A CD-ROM which can be read by a normal CD drive as well as by CD-I devices.
It is specified in the White Book. An example of a Bridge Disc is the Photo-CD.
Buffer
Memory built into your CD-Rom or recorder that temporarily stores information.
Buffer Underrun
Buffer underruns are caused when there is an interruption to the flow of data to
the internal buffer of the recorder. This is can be the fault of the software or the
hardware itself. When recording, data is fed continuously to the recorders buffer
in order to keep a steady flow of data which is required when recording. When
something interrupts that steady flow, it can cause a buffer underrun and your
disc is no longer useable.
Cache
A fast intermediate or buffer memory which is applied at many different areas in a
computer system. With Nero, cache memory is used to store files in buffer from
drives which cannot be accessed quickly enough in order to ensure that the
writing process continues without interruption.
Caddy
A special plastic housing used to protect the CD. The CD is inserted into the drive
in the caddy.
CD-DA (with the extension .CDA)

The acronym for Compact Disc - Digital Audio, this is the first standard for an
audio CD. An audio CD is comprised of several audio tracks whereby generally,
one track corresponds to one song. Each track is additionally sub-divided into
sectors. Music CDs generally make up this category.
CD-Extra/Enhanced Music CD
CD Extra is the latest standard for audio CDs and with a multi-media component.
A disc in this format always has two sessions. The first session only contains
pure audio data which can be played on an audio CD player while the second
session contains computer data in any format. This format puts audio AND data
on the same CD. The audio is recorded first with the data recorded in a second
session.
CD-I
This means Compact Disc Interactive. This format is considered a multi-media
CD that blends video, data, and audio. This type of CD can only be played in a
CD-I player or a CD Rom drive that is "CD-I ready".
CD-R
An acronym for Compact Disc - Recordable. A technology for CD-R (recordable)
media.

CD-ROM
An acronym for Compact Disc - Read Only Memory. This is described in the
Yellow Book. Differing types of data which can be read by a computer such as
programs, text, image data or sound may be stored with this CD format.
CD-ROM - Mode 1 and 2

A supplement to the CD-ROM format which provides an additional error
recognition and correction function. Mode 1 is especially used for computer data
and employs a code for error correction. Mode 2 is used with CD-ROM/ XA and
CD-I with audio data and contains an error recognition code only.
CD-WO
CD - Write Once. A CD which, as the name implies, may only be written on one
time. Refer also to CD-R.
CD-XA
This format means Compact Disc Extended Architecture. It was based on the
Yellow Book standard but adds audio and video to the CD in addition to the data.
CD-ROM/ Extended Architecture. This CD format makes it possible to store
computer data and audio or video data on one track. The different types of data
are linked to each other (Interleaving) so that synchronization problems can be
reduced.
Chapter Marks
These are marks set in the video which identify a scene change or place.
CIRC
Cross-Interleaved Reed-Solomon Code. An error-recognition and correction
process which is integrated permanently in the hardware of a CD player or the
CD-recorder.
CLV
Constant Linear Velocity. CLV describes a method by which the data of a CD
may be read with a constant scanning rate.
Digitalization
Conversion of analog signals to digital signals.
Disc-At-Once (DAO)
In this mode, all of the tracks are written in a single process onto the disc without
the laser being switched off. This format is best for audio CDs that will be played
in home and car stereo equipment.
Disc Image
This process can be used when having system performance problems or do not
have a recorder available. When choosing the disc image option, it takes the file
you want to copy and places it temporarily on your hard drive. From that image it
builds the file.

When creating a disc image, you will need a certain amount of drive space to
perform this function.
Drivers
A software file that will allow your hardware to be seen by the operating system
or software program and/or enhance its performance.
DVD
An acronym for Digital Versatile or Video Disc.
DVD-R
DVD was originally only known for being specific to the movie and the games
market; you can now burn data and your own home videos to a DVD disc that
can be played by all DVD-ROMs. You have the advantage of storing much more
data on this disc than on a regular CD-R/RW. The DVD-R is a non rewritable
format that is compatible with most DVD-ROM drives and DVD players.
DVD-RAM
Is another form of rewritable media however, it is not compatible with most DVDROM drives and DVD players.
It was originally designed to be used like a floppy disc so that users could copy
and delete files from it just like a floppy.
DVD-RW
An acronym for DVD ReWriteable. The DVD-RW disc is rewritable and performs
the same function as that of a DVD-R. However, the compatibility with DVDROMs and DVD players are less. Please check with the manufacturer for
compatibility issues.
DVD+R/RW
A rewritable and non-rewritable format developed in cooperation by HewlettPackard, Mitsubishi Chemical, Philips, Ricoh, Sony and Yamaha. It is a rewritable
format that provides full, non-cartridge, compatibility with existing DVD-Video
players and DVD-ROM drives for both real-time video recording and random data
recording for many PC and entertainment software applications.
EDC/ ECC
Error Detection Code/ Error Correction Code. This process serves for the
recognition and correction of scan errors which might be caused on the CD
surface by scratches or dirt.
Enhanced MusicCD/CD-Extra
CD Extra is the latest standard for audio CDs and with a multi-media component.

Fast Copy
With the fast copy method, Nero reads the data directly from your CD-ROM/DVD
drive and writes it directly onto the target disc in your CD recorder. This method is
faster than copying an image file and it does not require an approx. 100MB of
space on your hard disk. The disadvantage of this method is that a 'buffer
underrun' can occur. A buffer underrun always occurs if the CD recorder writes
faster than the data can be sent. The reasons for this can be a source which is
too slow (either hard disk or CD-ROM/DVD drive) or the hard disk is too
fragmented and the data flow is slowed down due to the excessive number of
accessed operations. This means that the data on your hard drive is scattered
into many parts of the drive and the CD-ROM/DVD drive needs time to look for all
the pieces and put them together.
Finalization
Finalization is the permanent closing of the writing procedure on a CD. After that,
it cannot be written to, regardless of whether it was produced as a single-session
or a multi-session CD.
Frame
A sector is made up of 98 frames. A frame contains 24 data bytes and 9 control
bytes. With an Audio-CD, 75 sectors provide one second of played music.
Green Book
This is the standard for CD's that are created in the CD-I format.
HFS CD
HFS is a file system used by Apple Macintosh systems. This format is only
suitable for Macintosh discs.
High Sierra
The forerunner of today's ISO Standard 9660. It was published in 1986. During
the course of time it has lost its significance.
Host Adapter
An adapter which connects a CD-recorder with the SCSI bus of the computer.
Hybrid-CD
A hybrid CD contains data in the HFS (Mac) section and in the ISO 9660 (PC)
section. If the disc is inserted in a Macintosh, only the data relevant for the
Macintosh is displayed and on a PC, only the ISO data can be seen.
Image
The term "image" describes all edited data which will later be located on a CD.
The creation of an image file is known as premastering.
Image Copy
One of two different copying methods can be selected: Image Copy or Copy OnThe-Fly.
Nero reads-in the files to be written on the disc and saves these as an image file
on the hard disk. The image file means that copying errors can be eliminated.

These errors could occur if you use a slow hard disk or a slow CD-ROM/DVD
drive as the CD recorder would not be supplied with a continuous data flow.
However, please note that up to 800MB will be required on the hard disk and the
copying times are somewhat longer.
Interlaced Video
This format displays video in two parts: Each part displays and contains a line in
every other row and the second part fills in the alternating rows until the screen is
complete. This method is faster than the Progressive Scan in which all rows are
displayed one at a time until the screen is complete.
Interleaving
This is the designation for the storage of computer data on the CD-ROM/ XA in
linked form. Another term here is nesting. This makes possible the
synchronization of audio and computer data during playback.
ISO 9660
A universal standard for CDs as defined by the High Sierra standard that defines
a discs capabilities. Data can be written onto a disc with this format. This format
can easily be used in many computer environments. If a disc must be able to be
read on various computer systems, then the file name length must be strictly
limited for instance, names which are used in DOS environments use a
maximum of 8 characters a period then a 3 character extension such as
12345678.ext as an example.
Jitter Control
Many CD-ROM devices are not able to read a single sector of an audio disc. The
results are little gaps due to the difference in the data stream. Jitter correction
synchronizes the data stream by overlapping the sectors and therefore no gaps
are created.
Joliet
Microsoft created standard for filenames that was made for Windows 95 and NT.
It supports up to 64 characters in the filename, unicode character set, and DOS
8.3 (eight characters in the main filename with a 3 character extension) names.
Label
Most CDs are provided with an imprint. This is known as the label. It is possible
to place it on the CD with different technologies, for example, with screen
printing.
Lead-In Area
The initial area of every session is known as the Lead-In Area at the beginning of
the disc. This is where the 'table of contents' for your disc and additional
information concerning the CD is stored.
Lead-Out Area
This defines the closing stages of a session and is place at the end of the disc. If
the CD has not yet been finalized, the reference to the next session is stored
here.

Mixed Mode
This format combines both data and audio onto the CD. With this format, the data
is recorded first and the audio tracks second. However, both are recorded in one
session.
Mode 1/ Mode :
Nero normally writes ISO data in the CD sector format Mode 1. However Nero
also supports the so-called XA-Format for ISO data. The XA format is an
extension of ISO structures and can only be burned onto the CD in Mode 2
(another CD sector format).
Multisession
When data is written to the CD more than once. After you have written your first
session to the CD, you can then add/write additional information with a different
data set.
MP3 Files (with the extension of .MP3)

The MP3 audio format has established itself as the most frequently used format
to transfer audio data via the internet. MP3 stands for MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3.
Using MP3, audio files can be reduced (or compressed) to a fraction of their
orginal size (factor 1:10), without diminishing the quality.
MPEG
An Acronym for Motion Picture Experts Group, it is a standard that was created
for highly compressed video such as SVCD and Video CD.
MPEG-1
Which is a part of the MPEG compression family has the highest compression
rate.
MPEG-2
There are very little differences between MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 with the
exception that MPEG-2 works better with televisions that are interlaced and is the
broadcast standard.
MPEG-3
This standard was created to define High Definition T.V.
MPEG-4
This standard is the next generation of MPEG-2 and is currently still in
development.
Master
After the creation of an image file, the actual process of CD production occurs. If
the CD is to be used for reproduction purposes, it is known as a master.
Mixed Mode-CD
Music and computer data are stored on one CD with this type of CD. The
computer data is generally located on track 1 and audio data is located in the
ensuing tracks.

Multi-Session-CD
A CD which is written in several sequential sessions is known as a multi-session
CD.
NTSC
NTSC is the standard for video and television in the United States and Japan.
Other parts of the world have another standard. NTSC has more frames per
second than PAL however. NTSC has less horizontal lines than PAL.
OEM
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. A product that states it is OEM
means that it was made by one company, for another company, to sell as its own.
On-The-Fly
A process for burning data onto a CD-R. There are two different methods of
doing this. With the classical and older method, all of the data which is to be
recorded onto the CD is first stored in a buffer in a large file known as an image
file. From there, it is copied or burned onto the CD-R. In contrast to this, the
method known as On-The-Fly transfers the data directly from their original
memory locations on a hard drive onto the CD-R. With Nero, a so-called
compilation is used for this purpose. This is a small file which only crossreferences the data to be transferred.
Orange Book
The standard in which the CD-MO (Magneto-Optical) and CD-WO (Write Once)
technologies are defined. It provides the basis for CD-R.
PAL
PAL is the standard video and television in Europe. PAL has more horizontal
lines than NTSC however, PAL has less frames per second than NTSC.
Photo-CD
A CD which is used for storing images, photos, slides and other visual data. The
Photo-CD is generally capable of multi-sessions. The standard originates from
Kodak and Philips.
Plugin
A plugin is a software file that allows one to have or use extra features with their
software or to help fix an issue.
Premastering
The preparation of data which is to be written onto a CD at some later time. An
image, which represents an exact replica of the data and the directory structure,
is usually created first.
Red Book
This standard describes the CD-DA.

Romeo
An old outdated data structure standard which was created by Adaptec to
support filenames up to 128 characters long including spaces. Files used with the
Romeo standard can only be read under Windows 95 and NT operating systems.
Unicode characters are not supported, however, they can be read on the
Macintosh systems provided that the characters do not exceed 31 characters.
Scan Rate
This is the indication of the frequency with which analog signals are converted
into digital characters.
SCSI
Small Computer System Interface. SCSI is a modern bus system to which
different terminal devices such as an SCSI hard drive, streamers or a CDrecorder may be connected. At this time, SCSI is the only possibility of operating
a CD-recorder on a typically-used computer system.
Sector
A sector is the smallest addressable information unit of a CD. It is composed of
2352 bytes of which - depending on the type of CD used - differing amounts are
available as user data. A sector generally consists of a header, synchronization
bits and user data. It may also have error recognition and correction data. To
read a sector, a drive with simple reading speed requires 1/75th of a second.
Session
When data is written onto a disc, this is called a session. A session is marked at
the start and at the end. You can write onto a disc and complete it in a single
session. If more than one session is recorded on a disc, then this is known as a
multi-session disc.
Session-At-Once
The session-at-once method is mainly used for CD-Extra. With the session-atonce recording type, a first session with several audio tracks is recorded in one
operation. The latter is then switched off but the CD is not closed (meaning you
are still able to write additional data to it). A second (data) session is then written
and then the disc is closed.
Simulated Recording
Simulation of the burn process in order to test whether there is a constant writing
flow. The procedure is the same as the writing of the disc, with the only difference
being that the laser writer is switched off.

When the data/audio is written or recorded to the blank disc one time only.
Super Video CD (SVCD)

Super Video CD or (SVCD) is very similar to a video CD however this format
uses a compression standard called MPEG to store the audio and data. When
creating Super Video CDs, the source data must be MPEG-2 coded and the
parameters must be suitable for Super Video CDs. An encoder must be used to
create Super Video CDs, which must have the required options. As the encoder

website at www.nero.com for additional information on purchasing the encoder.
SVCD discs can be played on DVD players, PCs with DVD-ROMs or a CD-ROM
drive with software which allows this type of video format to be seen.

Thermal Recalibration
As your hard drive platters rotate, they expand due to the heat that is generated.
The hard drive will stop for a split second to readjust the heads (which does the
reading of data) to the newly expanded platter(s).
Track
A disc is sub-divided into individual tracks - for example, separate songs or
pieces of music on an audio disc are each a track.
Track-At-Once (TAO)
With this method, each track is individually written onto the disc. The write
operation is briefly interrupted after each track. This means that a CD-R or CDRW can be written onto just like any standard disk.
UDF/ISO CD
The UDF file system has been especially optimized to handle large data
quantities and to also be able easily modify an existing file system just like you
would on a floppy however with a CD. This file format uses separate software
and also formats your disc differently.
Video CD
An acronym for 'Video Compact Disc', it holds movies and audio/video in stereo
with a compression standard called MPEG. One can also say that it is also
based on an ISO file system and contain digital video films. A video disc can be
played on most CD-ROMs, DVD players, and DVD-ROM drives with the help of
software.
Volume Descriptor
The Volume Descriptor is the area at the beginning of a CD in which the structure
of the file system is contained. It may also contain additional and optional
information about the CD, such as the name of the CD, the publisher, a copyright
notice, etc.
WAV/Wave File (with the extension .wav on your computer)

Audio files are saved on the hard disk in the wave format. The wave format is
part of the general RIFF Standard (Resource Interchange File Format). This
format supports various scanning rates and depths. This is the PC format for
saving audio files on the hard drive (Mac's use AIFF files). Audio files that are on
a commercial CD (store bought CD), are in digital form. When saving your
sound/audio that originates from a CD-ROM onto your hard drive, it must be
saved in analog form. Audio files cannot be saved in digital form on the hard
drive.
