Ancient China

GEOGRAPHY
LOCATION
China is a country located in eastern Asia.

PLACE
In ancient times, Chinas location limited it from contact with outsiders due
to two factors: 1.The long distances and 2. Natural barriers like mountains,
deserts, plateaus and water. China's landscape is divided as follows:

REGIONS & CLIMATES


China has some of the most diverse geography, climate and
wildlife in the world.
WEST CHINA
- Most of western China is mountains.
- The Himalayan Mountains are in this part if China (India is
on the other side of these mountains).
- Mount Everest is located in this mountain range and it is the
world's tallest mountain. People call it "the roof of the world."
The tops of the mountains have snow even in the
summertime.
- Tibet is in this part of China and it is a plateau region of Asia
located northeast of the Himalayas.
- In winter, the whole region is very cold and it can get as cold
as -40 Fahrenheit. But in the summer it can get hot, up to
about 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Panda Bears and Golden Monkeys live mostly in the
mountains of south-western China.
NORTH CHINA
- Most of middle of China is deserts located in the north.
- The most well-known desert is the Gobi Desert. It is one of
the worlds greatest deserts but there are few sand dunes. It
is actually made up of gravel plains and rocky outcrops.
- Temperatures reach extreme cold at -40 degrees Fahrenheit
and extreme heat at 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Some of this region is grassland where yaks graze but
farming cannot be done. Mongolia is in this part of China.
- Strong winds make travel dangerous in spring and fall.
- Gobi bears, the only desert-inhabiting bears live here.
Bactrian Camels also dwell here.

EAST CHINA
- East China is near the Pacific Ocean.
- Chinas eastern coastline meets up with the Yellow Sea in
the north, the East China Sea in the east and the South
China Sea in the south.
- There are long rivers through this part of China, running
down to the seas that flow into the Pacific Ocean. The two
biggest rivers are the Yangtze and the Yellow Rivers.
Alligators are found in the Yangtze.
- Most of the people of China live around here, where the soil
is fertile and they can get plenty of water for farming. In the
northern part, they mostly grow wheat, and in the southern
part, they mostly grow rice.
- In eastern China the climate doesn't get as hot or as cold as
the other regions.
- In the spring, when the snow melts in the mountains, these
rivers often flood.
- Northeastern China has deciduous forests and wetlands.
- Birds, snakes, salamanders, bats, red-crowned crane, the
red panda, deer, leopards and the Siberian tiger are just
some of the wildlife found here.

SOUTH CHINA
- The most southern part of China is Rainforest.
- It's hot and wet in this region in the summer, and sometimes
there are typhoons (tropical storm like hurricanes).
- Ginseng, a plant people used for medicine, grows here.
- Elephants, leopards, birds and other jungle animals are
here.
