The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with

partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It
provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology
development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing
technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network
of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a
broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.

The Agricultural Research Council-Institute for Soil Climate and Water (ARC-ISCW) seeks to
appoint experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions:
SENIOR RESEARCH TECHNICIAN: AGROMETEOROLOGY (Bloemfontein)
The primary function is to provide high quality technical support and insight to various
activities in maintaining the national weather station network in support of the Agroclimate
Monitoring project and the agricultural industry in general.
Key Performance Areas:
Manage, plan and execute the maintenance of weather stations in assigned regions.
Oversee Calibration, replacement and fault-finding of meteorological sensors.
Adhere to standard Ops Room procedures.
Maintaining customer support and liaison.
Planning of routes for regular weather station visits.
Administrative activities regarding the weather station network, including the development
and maintenance of a regional weather station filing system.
Identifying needs for the network expansion and replacement of weather stations.
Contributing to Agrometeorology research activities
General administrative tasks using MS Office software.
Preparation of regional budget and equipment need
Report preparation and writing
Requirements:
National Diploma/BTech in Electrical Engineering, Agriculture engineering or equivalent.
Proven experience in erecting and maintaining weather stations or equivalent maintenance
and calibration of sensors.

Attention to detail, thoroughness, accuracy and neatness.


Guidance of subordinates
Basic HR administrative duties (performance management, leave planning etc.)
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Understanding of GPS and coordinate systems.
Understanding of communication protocols via GSM, GPRS and other media.
Be prepared to travel for extended periods from time to time.
Valid Code 08 drivers licence.
