The Americans with Disabilities Act is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination
against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools,
transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public.
The ADA is divided into five titles (or sections) that relate to different areas of public
life. It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public
accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government services,
and telecommunications.
The employment title is designed to help those with disabilities have access to the
same employment opportunities and benefits that are available to people without
disabilities. The second title State and Local government is designed to prohibit
discrimination against anyone qualified with disabilities in all programs, activities,
and services of public entities.
Title III Public Accommodations prohibits discrimination of individuals with
disabilities in private places of public accommodations. Examples of these places
are Hotels, restaurants, Doctors office, and day cares. Title four Telecommunications
is a requirement of telephone and Internet companies to provide nationwide system
of interstate and interstate telecommunications relay services that allow individuals
with hearing and speech disabilities to communicate over the telephone.
Lastly is Title five Miscellaneous Provisions this title contains a variety of provisions
relating to the ADA, it impacts on insurance providers and benefits, it prohibits
against retaliation and coercion, illegal use of drugs and attorneys fees.
According to GSA Government-wide section 508 it states that
individuals with disabilities who are Federal employees to have access to and use
of information and data that is comparable to the access to and use of the
information and data by Federal employees who are not individuals with disabilities;
and individuals with disabilities who are members of the public seeking information
or services from a Federal department or agency to have access to and use of
information and data that is comparable to the access to and use of the information
and data by such members of the public who are not individuals with disabilities.
ALTERNATIVE MEANS EFFORTS.--When development, procurement, maintenance, or
use of electronic and information technology that meets the standards published by
the Access Board under paragraph (2) would impose an undue burden, the Federal
department or agency shall provide individuals with disabilities covered by
paragraph (1) with the information and data involved by an alternative means of
access that allows the individual to use the information and data.
