The pelvic cavity contains organs that support digestive, urinary, and reproductive functions and is surrounded by pelvic bones, muscles, and ligaments. Within the female pelvis, the urethra and bladder are located in front of the vagina and the rectum is behind the vagina, while in the male the bladder is behind the pubic bone and above the prostate, with the urethra passing through the prostate and into the penis. All of the organs, blood vessels, muscles and ligaments within the pelvic cavity work together to support these core bodily functions.
