TITLE: CALEB WRIGHT LESSON PLAN

This lesson plan is designed to last for: At least one week

Developmental Level: 2nd grade
Lesson Focus: Running and leaping
Alabama Course of Study Standards: 2:1, 2:4, 2:8 and 2:11
Objectives: List as many objectives as necessary

To run with correct form

To run for distance
To run for speed

Equipment:
For this lesson we need a gymnasium and a set of cones.
Introductory Activity (2-3 minutes daily): If students become bored with the introductory activity an
alternate activity can be substituted.
Name of activity: Freeze Tag
Description: When tagged, the person must freeze in a designated position (e.g., storkstand or straddle
stretch position). To be able to resume play, a classmate must high- five the frozen person.
NOTE: Make sure to select a good mix of higher and lower ability students to be the taggers at the same
time.

Fitness Development (5-7 minutes daily):

Activity Name: Elephants, Giraffes and Palm Trees
Preparation: Divide students into teams
Rules: Elephant- Shoulder on nose with arm dangling to form the trunk. People on either side hold
extended palms to form elephants ears.
Giraffe- Right hand up in a fist over the head, head down.
Palm Tree- Both arms up over the head swaying back and forth while making noise (wooooh) like a
breeze Two other students attach themselves to either side of the first students hips to become side palm
trees.
The teacher walks from the middle of circle. After explaining the three positions, the teacher points to a
student (in rapid/random order) naming one of the 3 positions. The student then assumes that position. If
the student (and partners) makes a mistake, they have to run one lap and do ten sit-ups and return to
their place.

Lesson Focus (15-20 daily):

Skill set 1: Review the cues and model the correct form of running. Use guided practice with students in
scattered formation.
Teaching cues:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Run on the balls of the feet when sprinting

Head up, eyes forward
Bend your knees
Relax your upper body and swing the arms forward and backward, not sideways
Breath naturally

Skill Set 2: Running from on destination to another using the correct cues Students will start on the
baseline and run at a comfortable speed to the other base line. Students should perform this activity till
they are able to run the correct way without having to think about it.
Organization: Students should be placed in groups of ten
1. Students will sprints with their groups using proper cues
Skill Set 3: Teach students how to run at top speed
Description: In proper sprinting form the body leans forward with the arms swinging in opposition to the
legs. The arms are bent at the elbows and swing from the shoulders in forward and backward plane, not
across the body. The runner lifts knees sharply forward and upward and brings down in a vigorous
motion, followed by a forceful push from the toes.
1. Students (in running groups) will go on the whistle and try to gradually increase speed each time
down the floor.
2. Students will start on the baseline and will attempt to run down and back in 15 seconds.
3. Students will run in place and match the speed to the music the teacher chooses to play.
Skill Set 4: Leaping- Review the cues and model the correct form of running. Use guided practice with
students in scattered formation.
1.
2.
3.
4.

Take off from one foot and land on the opposite foot
Extend arms, legs and toes while in the air
Try to leap a long ways as that forces the body to extend
Bend knee for cushioning landing

Skill Set 5: Leaping for distance- Teach the students to leap as far as possible
1. Have the students attempt to leap as far as possible from a stand still.
2. Students must line up on the base line and are allowed two steps before attempting the furthest
leap possible.
3. Students must line up on the baseline and run to the free-throw line and jump as far as they
possibly can.
Culminating activity (5-7 minutes daily for advanced classes): fun activity/game to enhance daily
instruction or reward appropriate behavior. If the students become bored with this game an alternate
activity can be substituted.

Name of activity: Jump the creek

Supplies: two jump ropes
Description: Students will be separated by gender. Each will have a starting line (first jump rope) and a
second line (second jump rope) just a few feet away. The goal is to clear the distance between the two
ropes. After each student in the line goes, the second line will get moved back. This process continues till
the distance becomes to great t clear.
Rules:
1. Students may take a running head start
2. If the student hits either line they are out
3. Once a student is out they must run one full sprint at full speed before being allowed to reenter
the line
