5.1. Introduccin
La cistatina C es una protena no glicosilada producida por las clulas nucleadas que se
filtra libremente en el glomrulo y es catabolizada en los tbulos proximales.
El empleo de la cistatina C como marcador de funcin renal es la aplicacin clnica
ms estudiada, aunque recientemente su utilidad como posible factor de riesgo
cardiovascular ha despertado tambin gran inters. Adems, la aportacin de
esta protena al diagnstico de enfermedades del sistema nervioso central
(SNC) ha sido igualmente objeto de estudio, debido a su presencia en el lquido
cefalorraqudeo (LCR).

riesgo de muerte por cualquier causa (12). La cistatina C permite, incluso, la estratificacin
del riesgo en los pacientes con sndrome coronario agudo sin elevacin del ST, para los que
se ha establecido un valor de corte, que divide a los pacientes en alto riesgo y bajo riesgo
(con mortalidades a los 35 meses del 44% y el 10%, respectivamente), de 1,12 mg/l si la
edad es menor de 65 aos y 1,21 mg/l para los mayores de 65 aos (13).
