Core Skills for Work

Critical Thinking
Defined as: The objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in
order to form a judgement.
Link to career: Scientists use logic and reasoning to identify the
strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or
approaches to problems.
Situation: During a biology experiment I was asked to form a
hypothesis (a prediction based on limited evidence)
Action: Based on the limited information I had at hand, I composed
a hypothesis.
Outcome: My hypothesis was proven correct when the experiment
was conducted.
Complex Problem Solving
Defined as: High-order cognitive process that requires the
modulation and control of more routine or fundamental skills.
Link to career: Scientists need to identify complex problems and
review related information to develop and evaluate options and
implement solutions.
Situation: I was deemed the leader of an eye dissection in a
human biology class. I had to determine what parts of the eye were
which, and discuss with members of my group.
Action: With careful movements and steady hands I slowly
dissected the eye, taking notes where I could and discussing each
stage with my group.
Outcome: I was able to identify all parts of the eye correctly and
efficiently.
Judgment and Decision-making
Defined as: The ability to judge, make a decision or form an
opinion objectively and wisely.
Link to career: Scientists have to consider the relative costs and
benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one for
the task at hand.
Situation: I was faced with the heavy burden of deciding what
undergraduate degree/s I wished to pursue in university.
Action: After carefully looking through all university handbooks I
weighed my options carefully and examined all courses that I was
interested in.
Outcome: Over time and with careful deliberation I decided on an
undergraduate degree at Murdoch University. (Biomedical science,
Molecular biology, Forensic biology and toxicology).
