HYDRAULIC 2
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The trainee should

be able to construct hydraulic systems as per system diagram supplied.

draw the systems diagram for the control of a single-acting cylinder with a 3/2
directional control valve and assemble this system on the hydraulic stand.
draw the system diagram for the control of a double-acting cylinder with a 4/3
directional control valve and assemble this system on the hydraulic stand.
know what measures to take to ensure smooth running of the piston.
be able to adjust correctly the hydraulic pressure in a system.
be familiar with the applications of a non-return valve.
be able to name the various components of a hydraulic system.

PRACTICAL EXERCISE 1

Recording the characteristic curve of a hydraulic pump

a)

Construct a hydraulic system according to drawing shown below.

b)

Measure and record the flow rate (Q) and discharge pressure (Pe) in the table.

Pressure Pe (bar)
Flow rate Q ( I / min.)

c)

Draw the Q-Pe curve.

PRACTICAL EXERCISE 2

Single-acting cylinder

a)

Complete the circuit diagram of the hydraulic system shown below. The control
system consists of a single-acting cylinder with a 3/2 directional control valve,
button operated.

b)

Describe the function of this control system.

..
..
..
..

c)

Assemble this control system on the hydraulic trainer unit.

PRACTICAL EXERCISE 3

Double-acting cylinder

a)

Draw the connections between the hydraulic components shown below. The control
system consists of a double-acting cylinder with a button-operated 4/3 directional
control valve.

b)

Describe the function of this control system:

..

c)

Assemble it on the hydraulic trainer unit.

PRACTICAL EXERCISE 4

Pressure control

a)

b)

Name the numbered components in the following diagram.

1.

..

3.

6.

..

Assembly the control system above on the hydraulic trainer unit and adjust the
pressure relief valve to 45 bar.

PRACTICAL EXERCISE 5

Piston speed reduced on return stroke

a)

Complete the circuit diagram shown below. Using a 4/3 directional control valve at
center-position, reduce the piston speed on return stroke.

b)

Explain the application of this type of control system.

..
..
..
..
..

c)

Assemble the hydraulic system on the hydraulic trainer unit.

PRACTICAL EXERCISE 6

Hydraulic pilot controlled non-return valve

a)

Complete the drawing of a cylinder control system. The piston should be held in all
positions by a hydraulic pilot controlled non-return valve.

b)

Describe the function of this control system.

..
..
..
..
..
..
..
..

c)

Assemble on the hydraulic trainer unit.

PRACTICAL EXERCISE 7

Smooth-running of the piston

a)

Complete this circuit diagram with the symbols for hydraulic components which are
necessary to ensure a smooth-running of the piston. For the return stroke no
additional components should be required.

b)

Name one application of this type of control system.

..
..
..
..
..
..

c)

Assembly it on the hydraulic trainer unit.

11

PRACTICAL EXERCISE 8

Differential-operated cylinder

a)

Complete the control circuit diagram.

b)

Describe the function of this control system.

..
..
..
..
..
..

c)

Assembly it on the hydraulic trainer unit.

12

PRACTICAL EXERCISE 9

Pressure dependent sequence control

a)

Construct the following control system.

b)

Adjust system pressure to 45 bar and preset pressure control valve to 30 bar.

c)

Describe the function.
