TeleMyo 2400T G2 Transmitter

Section 1: Introduction
BriefDescription
The TeleMyo 2400T G2 is the one of the portable Noraxon telemetry products. Each transmitter
can accommodate up to sixteen (16) channels of any combination of SEMG and a variety of
analog signals. Two transmitters can be coupled together to provide up to 32 channels. The
active electrode leads use Noraxons patented signal processing technology to provide clear,
consistent, and reliable data. Communication between the transmitter and receiver is bidirectional, using an internationally accepted direct sequence spread spectrum 2.4GHz radio
channel.
The 2400T transmitter/receiver combination allows the user to collect data using only two small
components and a computer. Once acquired, all data remains in a digital format.
A TeleMyo 2400T G2 transmitter system combined with a TeleMyo receiver is designed with
wireless LAN technology. It can be used in hospitals, research labs, and factory sites, even under
the most difficult conditions. Pre-amplified raw EMG signals, force, angle, acceleration, foot
switches or any other sensor with the standard measurement range of +/-5V can be interface with
one of the 3 optional receiver units.

IntendedUse
The TeleMyo 2400T G2 Transmitter is designed to create a connection from the TeleMyo 2400T
G2 to the users PC and thus transfer data from the TeleMyo 2400 to the PC for analysis. The
TeleMyo 2400T G2 system is intended to measure and quantify muscle biopotential signals
separately or in combination with other kinematic or kinetic signals. This information can be used
to affect muscle training and reeducation.
Intended Users
Researchers or individuals trained in physical medicine, physical therapy or ergonomics
Subject Populations Medical
Individuals with cerebral palsy, physical injuries, post-surgical or post stroke conditions
Subject Populations Non medical
Athletes, workers at their worksite, subjects in new product trials
Common Applications
Creating a connection from the Noraxon TeleMyo 2400 to the PC for the purpose of: Gait
analysis; tracking over time the outcome of surgical, therapeutic or orthotic interventions;
identification of ergonomic stress factors in the workplace or new product designs

Contraindications
Use of the TeleMyo 2400T G2 is contra-indicated in individuals who have implanted pacemakers.

TeleMyo 2400T G2 Transmitter

GlossaryofTerms

Multi-Channel Sensor Certain Sensor Types provide more than one signal. Thus a MultiChannel Sensor behaves like two or three standard Sensors. An example is a 3-D Accelerometer
that provides acceleration data for the x, y and z directions.
RF (Abbreviation for Radio Frequency) Wireless communication takes place on assigned radio
frequencies or channels. For the TeleMyo 2400T G2 System, RF transmissions occur at
frequencies between 2.4 GHz and 2.5 GHz. Other wireless systems including WiFi and Bluetooth
commonly operate at the same frequencies and can be a source of interference.
RF Channel RF transmissions for the Telemyo 2400T G2 System can be selected to occur on
one of 11 different radio frequencies. The ability to operate over several different frequencies
allows the system to reposition its radio operation if needed to avoid interference.
RF Traffic The presence of radioactivity present on a given frequency similar to the number of
cars on an expressway. Several users (wireless devices) may be communicating using the same
frequency. Best operation of the TeleMyo 2400T G2 System occurs when the RF Traffic is low
(no other users) on the selected RF Channel.
TM2400T Abbreviation for the Noraxon TeleMyo 2400T G2 Transmitter, a transmitter with leads
that attach to sensors on the body, used to measure surface EMG and other kinetic and
kinematic signals.

state. When powered on, the Power light will illuminate green. The Status 2 indicator will then
illuminate amber when the Transmitter is correctly reading the WiFi card.
If the Status indicators are in any other color combination, there is a problem with the connection.
To determine the problem, see the explanations of each status light combination below.

StatusIndicatorLights
The status indicators consist of three LED lights labeled Power, Status 2, and Status 1. Together,
these light indicate the state of the communication between the PC, receiver, and wireless
communication link with the transmitter. There are various color combinations, shown below,
which indicate the different states of the TM2400T G2.
Status 1

Status 2

In this state, the transmitter is searching for a PC radio card to

communicate to. No link to the Wireless LAN PC card has
been made at this point.
When the PC radio Card recognizes the transmitter, the Status
2 indicator will become steady. At this point, no EMG data is
being transferred; however, the wireless link has been
established.
When the acquire EMG data command has been sent from
the PC radio Card to the transmitter, the Status 2 indicator will
turn green and blink. When this occurs, EMG data will be
moving along the communication link.
Data Loss has occurred when the status 1 light turns red

StatusandPreMeasurementChecks
Each transmitter continually sends status information related to the available battery charge, as
well as the link state between the transmitter and receiver. This information can be viewed on the
computer screen in two separate ways. One way is a continual viewing of the status using the
transmitter test panel dialog inside Noraxons data acquisition software. The second way is a
temporary display of the status information in a brief dialog that appears prior to the beginning of
each new measurement. These two ways are illustrated below:

The battery status shows the level of charge remaining on the battery in both percentage and in
minutes. It is best to defer an extended measurement session and recharge the battery whenever
the battery status is below 20-30%. The battery charger can also display the charge level when
the battery is undergoing recharge.

When the battery cassette is first plugged into the battery charger, the Charging indicator will
illuminate. After 2-3 seconds, the Pack Capacity and Pack Charge will be displayed.
The Pack Charge displays in percentage how much charge is contained in the battery. This
gives an indication of how full the battery is as well as how much time is needed to complete
charging the battery.
The Pack Capacity is a percentage of the battery storage. When the battery is new, its capacity
will be close to 100%; however, the battery storage slowly declines with use (charge and
discharge cycles). When the Pack Capacity displays 50-60%, it is time to consider replacing the
battery. For example, a new battery will have a capacity of 4.4 AmpHr and would run 8 hours
when both the Pack Charge and Pack Capacity display close to 100%. After several hundred
recharging cycles the Pack Capacity may display 50%, there is only 2.2 AmpH available storage
and now the transmitter would only run 4 hours on this battery even when the Pack Charge
displays 100%.
The USB port allows the Battery Charger to be connected to the computer for detailed battery
information. A Noraxon Representative can explain how to use this special program if it is
needed for troubleshooting purposes.
If the battery is too low, the transmitter will not turn on and the power LED will show Red. Place
the battery on the battery charger for more information about the battery status. The charging
cycle is approximately 3 hours. When fully charged the battery will run for approximately 8 hours.
The transmitter batteries should undergo a minimum of 300 recharge cycles before needing to be
replaced. Replacement battery packs are available from Noraxon.

The TeleMyo 2400T transmitter battery cassette must be recharged using the
supplied Transmitter Battery Charger Power Source only. Use of an unauthorized power
source may create a safety hazard.

The battery charger must be operated in a different area or room separate from
the patient area.

ConnectingActiveLeadstoaPatientorSubject
Care should be taken to avoid accidental contact between connected but
unapplied active leads and other conductive parts including those connected to
protective earth.
Active leads (or other Noraxon sensors) are attached to the connectors labeled 1-16 on the side
of the TeleMyo 2400T G2. The snaps/piches of the active leads are then applied to the electrodes
on the patient. One of the leads will have a longer, third lead available for attachment to the
reference electrode.
For proper operation the EMG electrode must be applied to the measurement site so that the
reference electrode is in direct contact with bare skin. Some skin preparation for the reference
node site may be beneficial if the EMG signal exhibits a wandering baseline.
The active leads can be secured in place using Noraxon supplied elastic straps. Straps are
recommended if dynamic movements are expected.
Both snap (button) style and pinch (clip) style wire terminations are available. Noraxon also offers
extension lead wires for special needs.

memory card. The memory card is then connected to the PC via a Compact Flash card reader
and the records imported into Noraxons MR-XP or MR3 software for analysis.
Please see the TeleMyo 2400T G2 Data Logger Manual for further instructions on set-up and use
of the data logger mode.

CableandAccessoryConnection/Disconnection
Active Electrode Leads
Each active electrode lead has a built in pre-amplifier powered from the MyoTrace 400. In
addition, any of these EMG leads can be separately unplugged or replaced. The pre-amplifier
electronics are contained in the removable lead and can be in either single (standard) or a double
differential configuration. When connecting each lead to the MyoTrace 400, match the numbered
cable to the numbered receptacle.

WARNING
It is important to switch the MyoTrace 400 to the 0 position before connecting or
disconnecting any active lead. Failure to do so could damage the lead electronics.
It is also important to have all leads detached from the patient while the device is
being charged. Failure to do so may subject the patient to an unwanted electric
shock.
Finally, it is important to inactivate all input leads that are not being used. For active
leads this can be done by placing back-to-back electrodes between the lead snaps.
Alternately, unplug the lead.
Other Analog Signals
The MyoTrace 400 input channels can accept analog signals in the range of +/- 5 Volts. Noraxon
offers special adapter cables that allow signals from other Noraxon supplied battery operated
devices to be used in conjunction with EMG signals. For example, Noraxon footswitch and
electro-goniometer products can be substituted for any of the 8 EMG inputs by exchanging an
adapter cable for the active lead.

WARNING
Only Noraxon approved analog signal sources should be applied to the analog input
connectors. Generally, signals from battery operated devices pose no concern.
However, signals arriving from AC powered devices must never be directly attached
to the transmitter.
Frequent plugging and unplugging of inputs can prematurely wear out the transmitter
input connectors. It is advisable to always inspect the connectors for bent or loose
pins before attaching an input.

http://noraxon.com/drivers-and-firmware
The installed program will permit updates to the TeleMyo 2400 G2 system.

MaintaininganOptimalWirelessConnection
As wireless devices are increasingly more commonplace, the radio traffic in any given location
can change often abruptly. The TeleMyo2400 system operates in the 2.4 GHz band which is
shared by wireless networks and personal communication devices. The TeleMyo 2400 system
can be set to operate at one of 11 different frequencies within the 2.4 GHz. Radio channels 1, 6
and 11 are the most commonly set channels. Noraxon presets the radio channel to channel 1 on
both the transmitter and receiver prior to shipping. The transmitter channel must agree with the
radio channel of the receiver. However, the channel can be changed by the user.
Routine examination of the local wireless environment is recommended in order to select the best
operating frequency for the TeleMyo 2400 system as in Appendix A. A utility program (inSSIDer)
that can be used to monitor WiFi activity is available for download at this link:
http://www.noraxon.com/docs/default-source/Utility-Downloads/noraxon-inssider2installer.zip?sfvrsn=0
The WiFi monitoring program must be installed on a PC that has WiFi capability. The utility
program uses the computers WiFi radio to detect and report on activity on the various WiFi
channels. The inSSIDer display will appear as follows.

BatteryReplacement
The Lithium Polymer battery used in the TM2400T G2 is rated for a minimum of 300 chargedischarge cycles. Typical usage is 500 charge-discharge cycles. As the number of chargedischarge cycles increases the battery capacity slowly declines thereby reducing run time despite
being fully charged.
Brand new batteries can operate up to 8 hours when fully charged. If the run time of the TM2400T
G2 drops to 5-6 hours, battery replacement should be considered. The replacement battery is
part #BP6A. No soldering is required.
The battery packs should not be replaced by the user. Only qualified technical personnel may
perform maintenance. Special care should be taken to ensure all screws are tightened
adequately on the battery cassette to ensure it fits well with within the transmitter.

TeleMyo 2400T G2 Transmitter

RadioConsiderations
The TeleMyo 2400T G2 Transmitter and TeleMyo 2400 G2 receiver system operate in the 2400
MHz ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) radio band reserved for use in most countries of the
world. The radio transfers data digitally using a proprietary wireless protocol. Other devices
operating in this frequency band include computer networks, microwave ovens, cordless phone
sets and other WiFi enabled devices.
Despite all this competing radio activity the TeleMyo 2400T System is able to discern its particular
information from all the surrounding radio traffic. Reliable transmission depends on good signal
quality. Signal quality will fall with extended distances between the TeleMyo 2400T G2
Transmitter and the TeleMyo2400 G2 receiver. Obstructions (walls, metal structures, trees, etc.)
between the TM2400T G2 and the receiver will also lower the signal quality.
While the TeleMyo 2400T G2 is quite immune to interference, it does transmit a deliberate radio
signal that could affect nearby sensitive equipment. Users should always be aware of this
possibility. In a similar manner, although the energy level of the radio is considered harmless to
human beings, it is still prudent to minimize exposure.
Finally, although available worldwide, each country places certain restrictions on the operation of
radios in the 2400 MHz ISM band. These restrictions include allowable transmitter power levels
and broadcast frequencies.

SettingtheRFChannel
The RF Channel is the frequency used for communication between the TeleMyo2400T G2
Transmitter and the TeleMyo 2400 G2 receiver. Typically, the default option RF Channel 1
works well. However, sometimes there is a high amount of WiFi traffic in the area that may affect
the data transmission between the TM2400T G2 and the receiver.
If there is too much traffic on the selected RF Channel, significant data loss may occur. In order to
avoid data loss, changing the RF Channel to another frequency may solve the problem.
If the RF Channel needs to be changed, select a different channel in both the TM2400T G2 and
the TM2400 G2 receiver and take another measurement to determine if the data loss problem is
resolved.
The TeleMyo 2400 System can operate on any one of 11 different radio channels between 2.412
GHz (radio channel 1) to 2.462 GHz (radio channel 11). Radio channels 1, 6 and 11 are the most
commonly set channels. Noraxon presets the radio channel to channel 1 on both the transmitter
and receiver prior to shipping. However, the channel can be changed by the user, but the
transmitter channel must agree with the radio channel of the receiver.
Note: Not all radio channels are available for use in each country.
If data loss is still a problem, please refer to Appendix A for instructions to select another RF
Channel.

Section 18: Appendices

AppendixAInterferenceBetweenWiFiandTM2400RadioFrequency
Channels
Because any neighboring WiFi radios and the TeleMyo 2400 System share the 2.4GHz frequency
spectrum there is the possibility that the RF channels may overlap and interfere with each other
resulting in lost data. Remember, the selector on the TeleMyo2400T G2 Transmitter goes from 09, then A-F. (A=10, B=11, C=12, D=13, E=14, F=15.)
If you are aware of WiFi activity in the vicinity of the TeleMyo 2400 system, it is helpful to identify
which combinations of the eleven WiFi channels are being used. Once this is determined, select
a channel that avoids, as much as possible, WiFi channels that share the same radio
frequencies.

InstructionstochangetheRFchannel:
Use a network sniffer program to determine which WiFi RF channels are being used in your area.
InSSIDer is a network sniffer with a graphical display that is available as a free download from
the Noraxon website at:
http://www.noraxon.com/docs/default-source/Utility-Downloads/noraxon-inssider2installer.zip?sfvrsn=0
This network sniffer is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and 7 (32 and 64-bit). You can use
most 802.11 a/b/g wireless adapters, e.g. PC internal WiFi, PCMCIA card Wireless network
adapter and USB Wireless network adapter, to scan the networks in the area. Once the busy
WiFi channels are identified, change both the transmitter and receivers RF Channel to avoid
those WiFi channels.
However, the channel can be changed by the user. The
transmitter channel must agree with the radio channel of the receiver.
To change the channel of the transmitter and receiver, turn the TeleMyo 2400T G2 off and unplug
the USB cable from the TM2400 G2 receiver before changing the RF channels. The channels can
be changed using a small, flat head screwdriver. To set the RF Channel to 1, the slot in the
set screw should have the arrow pointing to 1. To change or set the RF channel, gently turn
the screw clockwise using the screwdriver. As the screw is turned, it will click into place at each
channel. The selector goes from 0-9, then A-F, (A=10, B=11, C=12, D=13, E=14, F=15.) Be sure
to change the channel this for both the TM2400 G2 transmitter and receiver.
Note: Not all radio channels are available for use in each country.

AppendixBUseofDisposableElectrodes
While the TeleMyo 2400T G2 can operate with reusable electrodes, it is typically used with
disposable surface electrodes. Any good quality silver/silver chloride electrode is acceptable.
Noraxon provides several types of quality disposable electrodes for a wide variety of Surface
EMG applications. Other electrodes may be used, but it is recommended that any electrodes
used with the TeleMyo 2400T G2 satisfy the requirements for standard ANSI/AAMI EC12-1991
Disposable ECG electrodes.

Attention

Because disposable electrodes have a shelf life, it is important not to use expired parts.
Bulk disposable electrodes come packaged in a sealed container or bag.
The expiration date can be found printed on the package container.
After the sealed bulk container is opened, the remaining electrodes should be used before
their gel begins to dry out.
Always keep the remaining electrodes in their bulk package until they are used.
If the electrode package does not seal itself, closing the package with tape or using a
zippered plastic bag is recommended.
Do not store the electrode package in the direct sun, as this will accelerate drying.
Avoid using electrodes that are randomly found lying outside of their bulk packaging as their
expiration date is uncertain and their gel has been exposed to accelerated drying.

Be aware that when disposable electrodes are removed, some individuals may notice a faint red
skin discoloration over the site previously occupied by the electrode. This skin discoloration is
typically benign and temporary and may be due to a mild allergic reaction to the adhesive or
simply be a slight abrasion caused by peeling away the tape. It will usually disappear within 24
hours.
Noraxon discourages any attempt to reuse a disposable electrode, even if it is simply pulled off to
slightly reposition the electrodes muscle placement. Some of the electrode gel may remain on
the original site and the EMG signal may be affected. Also, sometimes the electrode adhesive
may not adhere to the skin as well when it is reapplied. Noraxon strongly recommends against
the use of dried out electrodes that are re-wetted with electrode gel.

ElectrodeApplicationGuidelinesandFacts
1. If the subject has a fair amount of hair at the electrode application site, the hair should be
clipped. Shaving is not necessary and may irritate the skin.
2. The electrode application site should be clean and dry. The preferred method of cleaning is
with soap and water plus drying the skin with a dry cloth. Dry skin contributes to good
electrode adhesion and good trace quality.
3. Cleaning with isopropyl alcohol should be limited to situations where electrode adhesion is an
issue (diaphoresis, excessively oily or lotion covered skin), since it may dehydrate the skin
thereby causing skin impedance to increase. If alcohol is used, allow it to dry prior to
electrode application.
4. Noraxon recommends attaching the lead wire to the electrode prior to placing the electrode
on the skin. This will eliminate the potential for discomfort if snap lead wires are pressed onto
the electrode after the electrode has been applied. It will also prevent the electrode gel from
seeping out. Additionally, this method will prevent unattached leads from coming into
accidental contact with other conductive objects.
5. Electrode application sites may need to be abraded to lower the skin impedance. Fine sand
paper or electrode prep gel, e.g. NuPrep, can be used to abrade the skin.

P-2908 Rev K (Aug 2013)

47

Noraxon U.S.A., Inc.

TeleMyo 2400T G2 Transmitter

6. Electrodes are the weak link in the EMG measurement chain. Lack of proper attention to
electrode quality or site preparation is by far the most common cause of inferior recordings.
7. It may take up to 5 minutes for disposable electrodes to fully stabilize electrically once applied
to the skin. If extremely critical or precise measurements are intended, the electrodes should
be applied several minutes in advance of the recording.

TeleMyo2400TCableandAccessoryConnection/Disconnection

Attention
Frequent plugging and unplugging of inputs can prematurely wear out the transmitter
input connectors. It is advisable to always inspect the connectors for bent or loose
pins before attaching an input.

1. Active Electrode Leads

Each active electrode lead has a built in pre-amplifier powered from the TeleMyo 2400T. In
addition, any of these EMG leads can be separately unplugged or replaced. The preamplifier electronics are contained in the removable lead and can be in either single
(standard) or a double differential configuration. When connecting each lead to the TeleMyo
2400T transmitter, match the numbered cable to the numbered receptacle.
2. Other Analog Signals
The TeleMyo 2400T input channels can accept analog signals in the range of +/- 5 Volts.
Noraxon offers special adapter cables that allow signals from other Noraxon supplied battery
operated devices to be used in conjunction with EMG signals. For example, Noraxon
footswitch and electro-goniometer products can be substituted for any of the 8 EMG inputs by
exchanging an adapter cable for the active lead.
Noraxon also offers, as an option, the TM2400T Analog Signal Isolation Unit. This provides 3
or 6 channels of analog signal isolation and is meant for use with analog signals originating
from AC (wall powered) equipment. A typical example would be interfacing to an isokinetic
machine to monitor joint position and applied torque along with EMG.

Attention
Only Noraxon approved analog signal sources should be applied to the transmitter
input connectors. Generally, signals from battery operated devices pose no concern.
However, signals arriving from AC powered devices must never be directly attached
to the transmitter.
