Tie Dying

Spiral pattern

I did Franks shirt this

way, dry.
Pull shirt up where you
want the spiral to start,
and twirl in a circle, so
the shirt spirals.
Put 3 4 elastics on it (I
put 3), to divide it into
sections.

Drip the colours you are using in alternate

sections. (I chose to only use 2 colours)
I used the tip of the bottle to push the colour
down into the folds.
Flip over and do the other side.
I also did the edges of the ball.
I was afraid the colour wouldnt spread, so I
misted the shirt afterwards with a lot of
water, to try to get the colour to diffuse.
See the other page for finishing instructions.

All done!

Bullseye Pattern

The final
product!

Have your shirt damp I misted it with

a bottle. Or it will spread more if the
shirt is wet (run under water and wring
out).
Figure out where the bullseye will go
do one or more.
Pull the fabric up, and place an elastic
over it, as far down as you want the
centre of the bullseye to go.
Place a second elastic down a few
inches, to where you want the outer
ring of the bullseye.
Crumple fabric (I wanted a watery look,
so I crumpled it to leave white spots)
Place colour in the centre (top) of the
bullseye.
Place second colour between the first
and second elastics.
PUT ON RUBBER GLOVES.
Drip colour all over the rest of the shirt.

Flip shirt over, keeping

it crumpled, and put
the last colour you used
all over the back of the
shirt.
See the other page for
finishing instructions.

Firecracker lines

I ran the shirt under water and wrung it out so that the colours would bleed more
Since I wanted horizontal lines, I started at one side and made pleats all the way over to
the other side. (If you want vertical lines, start at the bottom or top and pleat.) I dont
know if rolling it would have worked, but probably the colour wouldnt have gotten into the
folds so well.
Put an elastic up from the bottom as far as you want the band to go.
Put a second elastic as far up as you want the second band to go.
Crumple the fabric at the bottom of the shirt.
PUT ON RUBBER GLOVES.

The final product!

Drip your first colour on the bottom of the fabric.

Drip the second colour between the two bands, leaving a bit of white closer to the bottom
of the shirt, if you want a white band between them. Theres blue above the top band,
only because it got there by accident!

Drip the second colour in some of the white spots on the bottom of the shirt.

See the other page for finishing instructions.

This is how much paint was left after doing 3 shirts.

Finishing your tie-dyed shirt

Cover the shirt with a plastic tablecloth, or put it into a bag, for 6 8 hours.
Rinse the shirt under running water till the water runs clear.
Take off the rubber bands.
Wash in hot water with a small amount of laundry soap.
Wash and dry separately. (If you are doing this with a class, you can wash shirts together if
theyre from the same colour family, and can agitate freely.)
WASH SEPARATELY FOR AT LEAST 3 WASHES.
