Back to the future: Australian Curriculum Visions?

For whom
o Secondary and tertiary Visual Arts and Design educators
o Art and design educators working in museum and gallery contexts
o K-6 teachers.

VADEA Executive is in the process of seeking endorsement for

the NSWIT Professional Accomplishment standards for this Conference.

CONFERENCE FOCUS
With the release of the draft Shape of the Australian Curriculum: The Arts due by mid year,
this conference has a key focus on what is proposed by the Australian Curriculum,
Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) and how VADEA and its members will
marshall an informed response. The conference will provide opportunitites to hear from key
stakeholders and a forum for discussion, debate and research based on the proposals. The
strengths of teaching and learning in the Visual Arts in NSW classrooms and the effects on
student learning will be showcased and celebrated. Delegates will hear from high profile
contemporary artists, patrons and an Indigenous Visual Arts activist/curator/writer/artist, all of
whom are making a significant contribution to the contemporary artworld and practices in the
visual arts. The future of Visual Arts education in NSW rests with members of our community
to contribute and take on leadership roles that initiate possibilitites rather than to simply be
affected by directives or events.

Day 1: A research focus (Thursday 24 June)

Visual Arts education in NSW has a strong tradition of syllabus development that is underscored
by the innovative use of theory and research. This has had an impact on our own practices. Day
1 continues in that tradition and invites art and design teachers, researchers and other visual
arts educators to formally respond to ACARA’s proposals in a 2000 word prepared paper.
Concepts as diverse as creativity, aesthetics and conceptual development, political discourse
and consciousness will be addressed.

Day 2: Leadership (Friday 25 June)

This day focuses on the Artworld and ACARA’s proposals. Patricia Piccinini will talk on her
practice as a contemporary artist. Luca Belgiorno-Nettis will address the powerful connections
between business and the artworld with the impact on events such as the Biennale, cultural and
urban developments in Sydney and the effects on contemporary exhibitions. Jane Naylor will
explore the relationships between art practice and teaching practice. Delegates will then be
invited to consider what is proposed by ACARA. Discussion will address the what these
proposals offer relative to what our syllabuses currently offer (and could offer in the future), and
our own beliefs, desires, commitments and practices as art and design educators.

Day 3: Advocacy and the realisation of preferred futures (Saturday 26 June)

Stakeholders in curriculum development in the Visual Arts have a key role to play in the
promotion of the value of learning in the Visual Arts. Day 3 focuses on issues of advocacy from
the perspective of influential practitioners including an Indigenous activist/curator/writer/aritst
Djon Mundine OAM and other artists and teachers. The intention is to build a base of influence
to affect public-policy while affirming and revitalising interest in the position of the visual arts, not
only in the arts, but in the broader curriculum. Keynote speakers and workshops will assist us in
how we might realise preferred futures. Workshop presenters include outstanding teachers who
will present on topics such as 4D art practice, rural projects, animation, teaching
sustainability in design, and student engagement in art critical and historical studies.
