PAINT DEFECTS (sags and skinning)

1565

Sags/runs
Description:

Also called curtains. An excess flow of paint.

Cause:

Too heavy application of paint and failure to brush out evenly.

Spray gun held too close to the surface or using the wrong spray
equipment setup, failure to maintain correct speed of spray
application (moving the gun too slowly) or adding excessive thinners
to the paint.

Remedy:

Before cure, brush out excessive paint. If being applied by spray,

modify spray setup or technique. After cure, abrade and apply
another coat of paint.

Skinning
Description:

Paint skin or lumps of material normally found on the inside

of a previously opened paint tin.

Cause:

Improper storage of paint where container lids have not been

properly and securely closed leading to air entering the tin and
causing the contents to cure and skin over.

Remedy:

Store indoors in a cool environment and ensure paint containers

are fully closed after opening. Where skinning does occur, carefully
cut around skin and remove completely. If contamination of paint
is suspected, straining of paint should be done.
