Letter from the Director:

n this extended summer issue, you will find everything you need to have a great summer with the OCL! With longer
days and more free time, summer is a great time to focus on incorporating early literacy activities into the daily life of
your child, like our story times featured on this page. In this county, almost 40 % of children arrive at kindergarten
without the skills necessary for lifetime learning.
Your childs development is important to us and raising a lifelong reader starts now! The National Institute for Family
Literacy showed that 3- to 5-year-olds who had been read to at least three times per week found the children:

Two times more likely to recognize all letters.
Two times more likely to have word-sight recognition.
Two times more likely to understand words in context.
These 3 abilities are critical in your childs development and are essential building blocks when it comes to academic and
life success.
We have many free resources and programs that will put your child on the path to being a lifelong learner. I, and the
entire staff, welcome you to take full advantage of what the library has to offer this summer, and every season, at the
OCL. So lets get in the game and READ!
