Diego slowly counted the money on his hand. Ninety pesos and seventy five centavos.
No matter how many times he counted it, it was the same. And it was never enough. He
stuffed the coins back in his pocket. He wanted to buy his mother a new duster for her
birthday this Sunday. The one she has been wearing was already worn out from
frequent use.
Diego was walking toward the direction of their house when he saw a crowd of boys and
girls in front of the barangay hall. His younger brother, Daniel, was there too.
"What's going on?" asked Diego.
"It's a contest," Daniel answered, "whoever gets the flag on top of the pole wins the
cash prize."
"I wish I could win," Diego mumbled.
"So do I," Daniel said wistfully, "but I am too young to join so I enlisted your name
instead before they closed the registration a while ago."
"You did? Thank you very much. You just don't know how much I need the money for
mother's birthday," cried Diego.
"That's what I thought!" Daniel proudly replied. "Now let's go near the pole so that you
can prepare yourself. You have to get the flag, remember?"
Some boys had already climbed the pole but nobody had reached the flag yet. When it
was Diego's turn to climb, Daniel took his brother's slippers and wished him luck.
Diego uttered a silent prayer before he positioned himself at the foot of the pole. As he
was climbing, he did not mind the screaming crowd. All he thought of was the prize that
awaited him. He persistently climbed up, unmindful of how many times he slipped along
the way, until he reached the top. The crowd cheered as he went down the pole with the
flag. He went straight to his brother and hugged him tightly before they proceeded to
claim the prize. They could not contain their happiness.
And the two boys excitedly went home to share the good news with their mother!
