Dear host family,

My name is Alexandra. I am a 24 year-old (female) from Romania. I currently live in Iasi

county, a city situated in northeast of Romania. Located in the Moldavia region, Iasi has
traditionally been one of the leading centers of Romanian social, cultural, academic and artistic
life. Iasi has a population of 263,410 (the fourth most populous Romanian city), the metropolitan
area is home to about 350,000 residents, while the population of the per-urban area exceeds
500,000 residents.
I come from a family of 5: My parents, Teodora and Dumitru and two sisters, Daniela and
Marina. My father works as a truck driver in a private company, he is quiet and just wants to
share his free time with his wife. My mother is retired but she gives her full attention to our
young sister and our niece. She is friendly and likes to talk with other people, help them in every
way she can. My eldest sister Daniela is 28 years old and she works as a team leader. She is
married and has a daughter of 7 months, Elena. My youngest sister, Marina is 16 years old, and
she is in her second year of high school in Iasi. She plays the guitar for different events. I have a
good relationship to my sisters and my parents. Sometimes there is a little quarrel but I think this
is normal and we try to resolve our problems together.
Now it is time to talk about my person: I am a creative and ambitious young woman
because I have a lot of ideas about my future. I am interested in helping people and for this
reason I am a Red Cross Volunteer since 2007. As a volunteer I helped the NGO, organizing and
implementing projects, coordinating the volunteers. I always work with a big team of volunteers
with different ages on different projects. The group consists of boys and girls(aged between 13
and 30 years old) with different characters and interests and it is sometimes difficult to motivate
them but even though its a really hard work I like to do this job and it gives me new energy
because I really love my volunteers.
In my free time during University I worked as Waitress, as a Phone Interview Operator,
Project Manager and now as a Database coordinator. It was hard work but now I am sure that I
can say that I am very flexible and independent. In about a year or two I plan to pursue a PHD
degree, but I am yet to make up my mind concerning my future area of specialization. So, at the
moment, I would like to take some time out of academics to have a different life experience, and
to have time to calmly reflect on my future academic/professional orientation. To this end, I think
spending a year abroad would be particularly interesting and really helpful.
My first language is, of course, Romanian, and I am also fluent in English. I started
learning English in primary school, and it was also the language of instruction in the secondary
school and high school that I attended. All in all, I have learnt English for 13 years. I am
nevertheless aware that learning a language within a classroom context is by itself, incomplete.
So, in order to really be at ease in English, I feel that a cultural immersion would do me a lot of
good. I am particularly interested in experiencing family life in UK, since it offers a cultural

context that is undoubtedly different from mine. For this reason, I would very much like to find a
nice family to live with and work for in UK.
When it comes to child care experience, I have looked after children in both formal and
informal contexts. I started caring for children some years ago. At the beginning I looked after
my little sister and as time went by, the adults trusted me and so I got more and more
responsibility. I tried (and I naturally try) hard to do my best. I got my first paid job at the age of
14. I had to look after my little cousin (3 months old) while her parents were out. My tasks were
to feed her, to take the little girl to bed and then to look after her till the parents came back home.
My job was not very strenuous because she was a nice and quiet little girl and I was proud that
the parents trusted me. I was her nanny for many years, whenever they needed. It is not always
easy to take care of children but it is a great experience, to share some time with them.
I have much patience because I trained these skills helping my parents to look after my
young sister since birth. I have the strength to set them limits if necessary and I am consequent.
When around children Im creative, joyful, playful and humorous. Last year, I won a project with
Vodafone Foundation and I spent six month in Romanian Red Cross Iasi Branch working as a
Project Manager. During that period, I provided after-school tuition to 20 children from
dysfunctional families, aged between 8 to 14 years. I also organized for them and took part in
recreational indoor and outdoor activities: we sang, danced, played games, role played, drew,
painted, and narrated stories. We also visited the local museums and went out on picnics.
Also, being a Red Cross Volunteer I had the pleasure to be in a youth project in Turkey in
2009, where I had under my direct supervision 4 children aged between 11-14 years old. I can
comfortably say that I sincerely enjoy spending time with children. When it comes to leisure, I
take pleasure in the simple things in life. I enjoy being outdoors, being with my friends, going for
walks, visiting places I have not been to, and reading a good book. I also enjoy drawing in
crayons and I often draw princesses for my aunts daughters Andreea (9 years old) and Georgiana
(7 years old). One of my best characteristics is my naturally caring personality
I would be happy to have the opportunity to speak with you: to answer whatever
questions you may have about me or my childcare experiences; to learn more about your family;
your interests and to know more about what you expect from the au pair arrangement.
I hope that I am the right person to take care of your children and I am looking forward to
hearing from you soon!

Sincerely yours,
