Introduction
The design of a soda can consists of many factors that are the same as used in design of
thin walled pressure vessels. Some of the factors taken into consideration are the internal
pressures of 30psi and a external load of 200 pounds. The can must be capable of handle
all the stresses caused by the pressure and load. With this project we must be capable of
use the course acquired knowledge to meet the requirements of the can design.

Volume verification when freezing

Water density:

1g/mL

Ice density:

.92g/mL

Density=m/V
Where m=mass and V is volume
Because the mass does not change, we can obtain the volume of the ice:

Our substance will need 386mL of space when is frozen.

The Can will also be filled with 5% of air.
So there will be 386mL of + 5% of an extra volume.
In total, we will need 405.3mL of space into the Can.

In this project we apply the knowledge learned in class and the state of stresses, principal
stresses, von misses and max shear, in order to meet given objectives. For the
construction of the soda can we chose to use the 3004-h19 aluminum with a thickness of
0.0038 in. And so we use the properties of the aluminum to calculate the stresses and then
make a design that can handle this stresses. According to calculations the soda supports a
max load of 385 lbs with a SF 1.93. It also supports a maximum pressure of 118 psi with
a SF 3.93 soda can and achieving very strong and efficient in its use.
