2.5 User guide

PTP 650 Series User Guide System Release 650-01-41, phn-3341 008v000.

3 NEW FEATURES
3.1 Fiber SFP port can be configured to receive Sync E reference
In earlier releases, only the Main PSU port can be used to receive a Synchronous Ethernet
frequency reference (in other words, to act as a Sync E slave), whilst the Main PSU port, the Aux
port, and the Fiber SFP port can all be used to transmit a Sync E reference (in other words to act as
a Sync E master).
In 650-01-41, the ODU can be configured to use either the Main PSU port or the Fiber SFP port to
receive a Sync E reference. Note that the ODU does not select between the Main PSU and SFP
ports automatically; the selection is part of the configuration. However, the link does continue to
select automatically between the nominated port at the near end and the nominated port at the
remote end, based on the QL level in Synchronisation Status Messages received at these ports.

3.2 Improvements to the Spectrum Expert

System Release 650-01-41 introduces several improvements to the Spectrum Expert page in the
web-based interface:

Channels can be barred and activated (un-barred) in the Extended Display Mode.

Multiple channels can be selected using standard Shift-Click and Control-Click methods.

The scaling of the horizontal axis has been improved and now supports horizontal scrolling
where appropriate.

3.3 Single polarisation configuration in the web-based and SNMP

interfaces
The unit now allows selection of single polarization operation of the wireless (H only or V only) in
the System Configuration and Installation Wizard pages of the web-based management interface,
and in the proprietary SNMP MIB.

3.4 Unit identification in the web-based and SNMP interfaces

The unit now displays the Electronic Serial Number (ESN) and Mechanical Serial Number (MSN) in
the System Status page of the web-based management interface, and in the proprietary SNMP
MIB.

3.5 Japan 4.9 GHz regulatory band

System Release 650-01-41 supports the Japan 4.9 GHz regulatory band as RB89.

3.6 Maximum range increased to 250 km

The ODU now provides an option to set Ranging Mode to 0 to 250 km.

4 PROBLEMS AND LIMITATIONS CORRECTED

4.1 Network Management
Misleading status when no regulatory band is selected
In earlier releases, the License Key attribute is reported as Invalid on the System Status web page
after the Reset Configuration function has been used, even when the License Key is valid. This
arises because the configuration of Regulatory Band is erased as part of the reset. The display is
potentially misleading for users. In 650-01-41, this attribute is replaced on the web page with
Regulatory Band = Invalid for the case where the License Key is valid but no Regulatory Band has
been selected.

Read only user cannot view data on the Diagnostics Plotter page
In earlier releases, a user with the Read Only account privileges cannot select and view data on the
Diagnostics Plotter page. This has been changed in 650-01-41 to provide a Read Only user with full
access to diagnostic data.

No warning displayed on user account lockout

In earlier releases, a user of the web-based interface is not provided with any indication that an
account has been locked after the configured number of failed login attempts has been exceeded.
This is potentially confusing, particularly if the user is not aware of the failed attempts. A warning
has been added in 650-01-41.

Spurious Port Allocation messages in the syslog

In earlier releases, the ODU reports a change to Port Allocation of the wired interfaces on the
remote ODU during start-up, even though the configuration has not changed. These messages are
not generated in 650-01-41.

Improvements to support for the standard SNMP Interface MIB

PTP 650-01-41 introduces several improvements operation with the standard SNMP Interface MIB,
specifically relating to the NIDU TDM ports:

ifConnectorPresent now reports the individual TDM ports correctly when a NIDU is attached,
so that all ports are indicated as present, regardless of whether or not they are enabled for
use.

ifOperStatus now reports notPresent for the individual TDM ports if a NIDU is not attached.

ifSpeed now reports 1544000 for every NIDU port enabled for use as T1, 2048000 for every
NIDU port enabled for use as E1, and 0 for every NIDU port not enabled. Note that the
ifSpeed returns the same value regardless of whether the port is in the Up or Down state.

phn-4285 001v000 February 2016

ifType now reports ds1(18) as the ifType for all of the NIDU TDM interfaces.

Unit accepts security certificates signed using SHA-1

In earlier releases, the ODU accepts X.509 security certificates signed using SHA-1 or SHA-256 in
the Security Wizard. In 650-01-41 the ODU accepts only certificates signed using SHA-256.
Example security certificates in the downloadable firmware package have been replaced with new
certificates signed using SHA-256.

4.2 Wireless
Histogram is not displayed for Receive Power on the Statistics page
In earlier releases, the Statistics page doesnt display the expected histogram when clicking on the
Receive Power attribute. This has been corrected in 650-01-41.

Inconsistent Y-axis scales for Diagnostic Plotter Data Rate display

In 650-01-40 the Y-axis of the Diagnostic Plotter is sometimes scaled incorrectly so that the display
cannot accommodate all of the recorded data for Tx and Rx Data Rate. The scaling has been
changed in 650-01-41 to remove this problem.

Channel barring apparently accepted from Read Only users

In earlier releases, the Spectrum Expert page allows a user with the Read only privilege to select
channels and to press the Bar Channel and Activate Channel buttons. The ODU does not actually
change the configuration of channels, but no feedback is provided to the user to explain that the
action has failed.
In 650-01-41, the Bar Channel and Activate Channel buttons are locked for Read Only users to make
it clear that configuration changes are not allowed.

4.3 Ethernet bridging

Gigabit Master/Slave Status should be Not Applicable for fiber SFP
In 650-01-41 the Gigabit Master/Slave Status attribute always returns Not Applicable if the SFP
cage has no module installed, or if a fiber SFP module is installed. This is appropriate because the
fiber interface uses separate transmit and receive fibers, without separate Master and Slave roles.
The Master/Slave Status applies only when a copper SFP module is installed.

Misleading error message when IEEE 1588 is configured at the SFP port
In earlier releases, the ODU displays a misleading error message on the LAN Configuration page
when the Transparent Clock Port is set to SFP, an optical SFP is installed, and the SFP port has
not negotiated. In 650-01-41, the ODU displays separate (and more appropriate) messages for the
cases where the SFP link has not negotiated, and where the SFP link has negotiated with the
Copper medium.

4.4 Cable diagnostics

Cable diagnostics results are not displayed on the port used for management
In 650-01-40, a blank page is displayed when the cable diagnostics check is exercised on the port
that is used for network management. The results can be displayed by pressing the browser Back
button and the refreshing the page. In 650-01-41, the ODU displays the results immediately on
completion of the test.

Incorrect Last Test Time on the Cable Diagnostics page

In earlier releases, the Last Test Time attribute on the Cable Diagnostics page is incorrect if the
Time Zone or Daylight Savings Time attributes are set to values other than zero. This problem has
been resolved in 650-01-41.

5 KNOWN PROBLEMS OR LIMITATIONS

5.1 Network Management
ODU does not adjust MTU based on receiving Packet Too Big message
The PTP 650 ODU does not adjust its MTU in use for the management agent upon receiving an
ICMPv6 packet too big message.

ODU does not appear to respond to MLD queries

The unit does not process IPv6 Multicast Listener Discovery version 1 (MLDv1) general listener
query messages reliably.

5.2 TDD Synchronization

Not Synchronizing with 3460 s Frame duration and no GPS deployed
A Master ODU does not provide synchronization in the situation where all of the following are true:
(a) frame duration is configured for 3460 s and (b) no GPS is deployed and (c) timing for the site
derived from the Cluster Master ODU.

5.3 Network synchronization

Phase error caused by disconnecting and reconnecting SyncE slave port
There is sometimes a large phase transient at PTP 650 Sync E outputs if the ODU makes a
transition from tracking to holdover triggered by physical disconnection of the incoming Sync E
reference. This large phase transient does not occur if the transition to holdover is triggered by a
change in the QL of the received reference.

Wander transfer function fails EEC Option 1 and Option 2 in G.8262

The peak gain of the wander transfer function within the passband of the tracking loop is 0.7 dB
compared with the 0.2 dB requirement in ITU-T recommendation G.8262.

phn-4285 001v000 February 2016

The bandwidth of the tracking loop in PTP 650 is somewhat greater than the 0.1 Hz requirement for
EEC Option 2 networks, and consequently PTP 650 does not comply with the wander transfer limits
in Table 13 of G.8262. This is not likely to be a problem in typical applications of PTP 650, where the
number of Synchronous Ethernet nodes is small.
