e encounter many people every day. We sit beside

them on a bus, walk along them on the road, bump
onto them inside a crowded mall, talk with them over
the phone, or even get mad at them over some petty things on
the street. Whoever it is or wherever it may be, we cannot deny
the fact that in one way or another every encounter we have
is a life changing experience, and an opportunity for sharing,
learning, influencing and making a difference.
This reminds me of two people Ive recently encountered who
left lasting impression in my life. First, is a boy about 7 years
of age, whom I thought was a pile of trash lying
in the middle of a footbridge with a small
can placed beside him. Another, is
a 59 year old man, who recently
had a stroke while living inside
the prison due to the murder he
committed five years ago. In
such encounters as these, I repeatedly ask myself What can
I do for them? Then, I do all the
good works I read in the Bible that I
thought I should do. I feel good. Yes, it always does especially if you make them
happy, and of course, when somebody
gives you applause, thumbs up or
a tap in the back. However, at the
end of the day, I found myself
contemplating, What is really
a missionary? What should one
supposed to do as a missionary?
Ellen White states, Every true disciple
is born into the Kingdom of God as a missionary. Thus, if we profess to be true followers, then all of
us are missionaries. So, as missionaries, what should we do?

Most of us think that as missionaries, we should go out from

our comfort zone, cross boundaries, proclaim the Gospel,
baptize people, do community service, and the like. In this
view, we are often tempted to think that mission work is a
mere human activity, and the credit goes to those who have
done a great job in preaching and soul winning. However,
there is more to being a missionary than that.
All children of God are partakers of Gods mission in saving humanity. We are an instrument through which God
does His work. We are not simply called and sent to be His
missionaries, but we are also fulfilling Gods mission. Thus
in knowing this, we should then redefine our concept of
mission. It is not entirely the crossing of boundaries, proclamation of Gospel, baptism, doing community services or
medical missions, and other good works that draw people
to God. It is the God in mission seen working in our lives
that draws people to God. We do not do good works to
draw people to us. We do good works, because God is living in us. In this way, we have become the transparent medium through which Gods light shines, and so we become
the light to the world.
Being a missionary is neither about us nor our works. It is
about God working in and through us. It is not only reaching out to others, but also reaching out to God; clinging on
to Him and thirsting for Him. And with a transformed life,
the people can see, not you and me, but our Almighty God
who is living in us.
In this issue of Maranatha, you will read about the different life changing encounters of our missionaries. We hope
that in reading this, you will have a better understanding
of the mission work, and you will be inspired to tell others
the love of God, not through works or theories, but through
your own life story.

Being a missionary is neither about us

nor our works. Its about God
working in and through us.

Directors Corner

The Passover
We are the spiritual Israelites who are traveling from Egypt, the land of slavery, to Canaan, the land
of promise.
Do you know that the 10 plagues upon the land and the people of Egypt were Gods judgment upon
the favorable gods of Egyptians, which could also be Christians hidden gods in their mind?
The first plague, which turned the waters into blood, was a judgment against Apis, god of the Nile;
Isis, goddess of the Nile; and Khnum, guardian of the Nile. The Nile was also believed to be the
bloodstream of Osiris, who was believed to be reborn each year when the river flooded. The river is
the basis of daily life and the national economy. Are you punctual for your daily office work? How
about your punctuality on Sabbath?
The second plague, which brought frogs from the Nile, was a judgment against Heqet, the frogheaded goddess of birth and fertility. Frogs were thought to be sacred and not to be killed. Do you
wish to be super-lucky by buying lotteries? Are you spending your money and time at Casinos day
and night for another super luck?
The third plague, gnats, was a judgment on Set, the god of the desert. Unlike the previous plagues,
the magicians were unable to duplicate this one and declared to Pharaoh, This is the finger of God
(Exodus 8:19). How do you distinguish yourself from non-Christians in your society? Do you pray at
restaurant? Do you read the Bible daily? Do you speak godly words?
The fourth plague, flies, was a judgment on Uatchit, the fly god. From this plague, God clearly distinguished between the Israelites and the Egyptians. Are your plans and imagination in your mind
righteous and holy or dirty and immoral?
The fifth plague, the death of livestock, was a judgment on the goddess Hathor and the god Apis.
God was showing His ability to protect and provide for those who obey Him. Pharaoh sent investigators (Exodus 9:7) to find out whether the Israelites were suffering along with the Egyptians, but when
he found out that they werent, his heart hardened against the Israelites. What are your extra income
sources? Do they give you peace and happiness?
The sixth plague, boils, was a judgment against several gods over health and disease Sekhmet,
Sunu, and Isis. This time, the Bible says that the magicians could not stand before Moses because
of the boils (Exodus. 9:11). Do you still drink coffee and alcoholic beverages in order to entertain
your business partners and release your stress? Do you still believe that meat will strengthen your
body and give you more stamina?

LAMB
The seventh plague, hail, attacked Nut, the sky goddess; Osiris, the crop fertility god; and Set,
the storm god. This hail was unlike any other that they had seen before. It was accompanied by fire
which ran along the ground, and everything left out in the open was devastated by the hail and
fire. Do you have someone you can depend on more than our Father in heaven? Is that person rich
enough to support you when you are financially difficult or physically sick?
The eighth plague, locusts, again focused on Nut, Osiris, and Set. The later crops, wheat and rye,
which had survived the hail, were now devoured by the swarms of locusts. There would be no harvest
in Egypt that year. Are you secured by all kinds of earthly insurances - life insurance, medical insurance, car insurance, travel insurance, body organ insurance, house insurance, education insurance,
dental insurance, so on and so forth - not only one, but several of them for sure?
The ninth plague, darkness, was aimed at the sun god, Re (Rah), who was symbolized by Pharaoh
himself. For three days, the land of Egypt was smothered with an unearthly darkness, but the homes
of the Israelites had light. Are you a self-centered person? Are you envious and close-minded, stubborn and stiff-necked? Do you want to be focused, spotlighted and identified with good respect all
the time just like king Pharaoh?
The tenth and last plague, the death of the firstborn males, was a judgment on Isis, the god of life
and the protector of children. You may buy very expensive top brand clothes for your kids while you
are offering few coins for Gods mission. You may fly to many famous countries with your kids, but
never dream to bring your kids to the mission fields. Dont you know that your children can be your
very own gods more important than our God in heaven?
It was so clear that the Israelites came out of Egypt after all the gods of the land were destroyed by
God. In other words, the total removal of our personal gods from our Christian life must take place
if we really want to go to heaven. The total surrender to the name of Jesus, the Passover Lamb, and
full acceptance of the blood of the Passover Lamb is the only way for men to be saved (Acts 4:12).

Devotional

One set of
Footprints

Fixing your our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the
at the right hand of

Have you ever wondered why we experience a lot of trials, problems, and sufferings in life?

It is because of the consequence of sin. This is why suffering, sickness and problems are present in the world.
According to Ellen White, in her book, The Great Controversy, He does not forget or neglect His children;
but He permits the wicked to reveal their true character that none who desire to do His will be deceived concerning them. Again, the righteous are placed in the furnace of affliction, that they themselves may be purified; that their example may convince others of the reality of faith and godliness and also that their consistent
course may condemn the ungodly and unbelieving (48.1).
With the difficulties in life that we go through these days, our only option is prayer in asking God for help and
answer to our problems. We may sometimes ask ourselves why our prayers are not granted right away. The
problem is, we often experience delayed solutions to our dilemmas leading us to question God and demand
why He doesnt answer in an instant manner.
Nowadays, services are being offered the fastest way in order for us to live an easier and convenient life. Instant things are everywhere! However, our human perception of life is totally different from how our Almighty
God perceives things.
The book of Isaiah states, For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, says the
Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts
than your thoughts.

Hebrews 12:2
Does God really want us to suffer? If not, then why are we suffering?
Life in Christ neither renders as resistant to problems nor grants us immunity from trials and discouragements. However, it makes life more interesting because it brings us to greater challenges. In James 1:2-4,
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into diverse temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith
worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. We may not or never understand the situation we are in right now, but God has a plan laid out for us far
beyond our human understanding.
Are you currently experiencing trials or difficulties in life? It may be that you feel like there is only one set
of footprints in the sand. But remember, it is the time when God carried you on your down and hopeless moments. Just trust Him, He who has been with you in the past years of your life will not leave you now. He
knows whats best for you. Claim and cling into His promises today.

Winning Souls

45th Batch SPUC missionaries

endterm evangelistic meeting
reaps 33 souls
On October 2-10, 2015, in the municipality of Pilar, Siargao, Surigao del Norte, the 45th Batch
missionaries assigned in South Philippine
Union Conference (SPUC) held an end-term
evangelistic meeting which brought 33 souls
at the feet of Jesus.
This fruitful harvest is a result of the joint efforts
of the local SDA churches; HISM 1 singers, who
graced the event with pleasing religious music;
and Pr. Eugene dela Pea (1000 MM SPUC Assoc. Director) as gospel speaker.

10-day Health and Happiness Crusade

wins 5 souls

On November 21, the 10-day Health and Happiness Crusade which was held at Sta. Cruz Ronda
Church, Cebu, with Pr. Seth Esmeralda (CVC Youth
Director) as the speaker, concluded with a baptism
of 5 souls.
Since August, the church members and 45th Batch
missionaries, Gezziel Yamut and Diana Acero
Poma, have been actively involved in different ministries, such as giving bible studies and friendship
evangelism, in preparation for the crusade.

One of them told us that she was convinced to accept the Jesus
by means of radio ministry, Gezziel Yamut (45th Batch missionary)
reported. So, she looked for our church and attended the crusade.
Another woman said that she found Jesus through reading the Bible
given by one of the church members and through the effort of the
missionaries, she added. Another one is a son of a church member,
while the other two are outcomes of friendship evangelism.
Aside from this baptism, 97 children have also graduated in their Bible School. There are still many souls who wanted to accept Jesus
in their lives, but are hindered by some circumstances. We hope
and pray to witness more souls follow Jesus, but only God knows,
Gezziel said. Our work is to do wholeheartedly the responsibilities
which God has entrusted us.

Last Nov. 28, 2015, a baptism of 8 souls from the
Mangyan tribe of San Agustin, Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro was officiated by Pr. Rey Torres.
This was the result of a one-month nightly doctrinal meetings spearheaded of the
couple missionaries, Gerald and Anna Abriol (45 Batch), with Gerald as the speaker.
The couple missionaries have been diligently
serving and sharing the gospel in the once
unreached territory amidst the tough living
condition they are in. For 9 months of partaking in Gods ministry, 13 precious souls have
already been brought to the Kingdom of God,
and many more lives have been changed.
God has indeed made His ministry fruitful in this place through the efforts of these
faithful missionaries. Let us continually pray
that these newly baptized members faith
will remain steadfast until Jesus comes!

On November 14, 2015, a baptism of three

Mission Story

Beyond
Soul Winning

by Nicolas Amba, Jr.

Giving bible study right away.....

...is not efficient in this place
This was the information we got when we arrived in our mission
field. So, we thought of a way how we can witness to the people in
this place using the talents that God has endowed us. Then an idea
came about, and we call it - Ministry of Teaching, and Free electrical installation and repair service.
To bring this to realization, we informed the barangay officials, and
then the residents through house visitation. We also asked permission from the principal of the local elementary school whether we
could have a tutorial program in their school as part of our teaching ministry.
By Gods grace, our request was granted. The residents responded
positively to our offer, and the school also allowed us to teach. The
school also requested us to teach computer class, and reading to
those students who can hardly read because none of the faculty
members can spare extra time. Not long after, the class schedule
was laid out, and we started with the ministry.
We are not just up to giving Bible studies; we also use our Godgiven talent in serving the people. We pray that we will be able
to share the eternal truth of Gods Word to others as we provide
these simple services, and in Gods own time, many souls will have
a deeper knowledge of God and meaningful relationship with Him.
Please help us in praying for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in
this place, and that in the right time, more souls will be brought to
Jesus feet.

God
Saves

Missionaries
December 14, 2015, is a date that I will never forget for the
rest of my life. On that very day, I and my partner, Agus, went
for a hike with Gerson (a volunteer missionary) and our church
elder, Rudy, a former pastor of Evangel Family Church who has
recently been converted.
We enjoyed our hike all the way up the mountain seeing the
serene view of nature that surrounds us while anticipating meeting the brethren to encourage and help them in cleaning their
church in preparation for their nightly revival crusade.
When it was time for us to go
back to our mission field, we all
decided to walk instead of riding on a motorcycle, so that we
could save money. So, we gave
the 500 pesos to the elder, and
made our way home by foot.
Not long after, the sun started
to set, and it would get dark in no time. It would be too dangerous for us to hike at night, we thought. So, we changed our
minds, and took the offer of a cheaper motorcycle ride going
home. After saying a prayer, the four of us rode on one motorcycle.
Darkness slowly covered the slopy mountain, and the evening
fog rolled in enclosing the whole place. Shortly, we could barely
see the road as it was hidden beneath the dense fog. The air
chilled, and we could feel it harshly brushed our skin as the motorcycle made its way speedily down the rocky road. As we approached the foot of the mountain, the motorcycle went down
even faster as it was before, making us shudder on our seats
the more.

by Aimain Lorejas

Then, in the blink of an eye, the driver lost control and the
motorcycle flew, and we fell off the cliff along side the mountain road. I opened my eyes, but it was pitch-dark. I found

myself lying on a cold ground aching all over. I could hear

some voices groaning in pain, but I couldnt tell who and
where they are. I looked for my phone, trying to illuminate the surrounding. I managed to get up, and tried to
walk. Elder Rudy also was able to stand despite of the
aches he felt, but the 3 of them, including the driver, verbalized that they could hardly stand. So, elder Rudy and I
went to look for help.
We arrived at the hospital 3 hours after the accident, and
physical examination showed that none of us got any major injuries. Praise God!
This miracle is a firsthand experience of Gods protection
and guidance that would forever remind us Gods love.
We all believe that God is always with us. He always protects and saves us. Psalm 91: 5, 6, 11, 12 states, You will
not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by
day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the
plague that destroys at midday... For he will command his
angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they
will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike
your foot against a stone (NIV).
God is indeed faithful to His promises. We just need to
have faith in Him and believe in His words.
All of us are Gods missionaries, and we are never afraid of
anything because God is always with us. So, in everything
we do and anywhere we go, let us always pray, trust in
Him, and He will never fail us.

Aimain Lorejas (Filipino) and Agusdermawati Ndruru (Indonesian) are 45th Batch missionaries assigned in Sitio Maluan, Marahan, Marilog District, Davao City. They have been
serving the people and sharing Gods Word for 10 months. In this span of time, God has made them fruitful having ushered 80% of the total membership of the Evangel Family
Church to the Seventh-day Adventist Church during the evangelistic meeting spearheaded by a Korean team, with Pr. In Ho Hwang as the speaker. On that occasion, not only
17 church members from the Evangel Family Church were baptized, but also the church pastor. The church they have been serving is a product of the diligent labor of the 36th
Batch missionaries, Romil Casagnap and his partner. From 7 church members, the church now has a membersship of 24. Two more souls will be baptized sometime in January.

Mission Story

Free For All

Sister, give us a signal so that

we can go and do our part, the
kids uttered. So, the missionaries shouted, Go! Immediately
the kids ran screaming, Free
hugs! at the top of their lungs
as they ran toward a crowd
who were clearly astonished
by the sudden commotion.
The missionaries thought that the people would feel awkward but they were wrong. To their surprise, the people responded to kids free offer and hugged them tight.
This was the first program of AMM, themed -An All Free
Ministry. The youth and children alike went to the crowded
park of General Santos City to offer free hugs, free juices,
and free prayers, which made the people who responded
to their offers happy, grateful, and feeling blessed.
When asked of their purpose in doing this, the children responded by gladly saying one of these three simple reasons: To make you happy sir, to be a blessing, and to share
the love of God that we received freely. Simple and childlike their answers may be, but these very words touched
the peoples hearts and brought smiles to their faces.

So, when everything was ready, they prayed by partners,
and excitedly walked towards the market, where they gave

some refused. But they didnt give up..They kept giving until

HEART

How does it feel to be assigned in the

campus?
This is just one of the queries that most people ask the campus missionaries.
Being in the premises of a serene and refreshing environment, away from the hustles and
bustles of the busy city streets, or the humble surroundings of the far-flung mission fields,
many thought that being a missionary in the campus is really comfortable yet boring.
Since many wonder how the campus missionaries live and do the mission in this seemingly comfy place, we took time to interview some of them, and hear their hearts out.

16

MARANATHA October-December 2015

What can you say about being a missionary in the campus?

For me, being a missionary in the campus is a

blessing because I have the opportunity to serve
here and in other places, too. On weekdays,I edit
Maranatha magazine, make videos and weekly
magazine, and/or go to embassy or airport. While
on Sabbath day,I join jail ministry in the morning
and house visitations in the afternoon.

-Hwang Yoon Hwan (Media)

How would you describe your life in the campus?

Im assigned in the farm. Working in the farm is like being a missionary in the field. The plants are the people,
and I am the care-taker. Im doing my best in taking
care of the farm because if it yields many produce, it
would generate more income; therefore, many missionaries can be supported financially. Thats why Im
happy to be here.
-Ernel Cadiente(Farm)

What do you do in the campus and how do you give your best
in your assigned work?
As a part of the HISM (official singing group), I practice singing 5 times a week. I do my best by diligently
practicing songs every day. I entrusted my talent to
God in this ministry, so I keep on praying that the
Lord will help us (HISM members) to be successful

I dont

Care

Leo* was one of my students. He wasnt really fluent in English and his grammar, accent and pronunciation

wasnt at all impressive. Nonetheless, he was better than most of his classmates, and that made him cocky. He
always showed this inattention, disregard and disdain at class that tempted me to lose my patience and whack
him on the head. He would always sing this K-Pop song, I dont care, every time I would correct them of
some grammatical mistake they made. This went on for some time until I couldnt ignore
I was almost in tears when I told him, So, Leo, you dont care? Well, I care.
I want you to learn and improve your English because I care. You dont care.
But I care. I was enthusiastic in teaching English, even giving prep talks
Im determined
on my first day exhorting them to love English. Well, obviously, this
to keep caring because
simply doesnt work if the students themselves dont care to learn.
God cares. Im not about to
give up on Leo because God
This encounter with this kind of student makes me think of how much
has never given up on me.
God cares and how we just dont care. Hes given us everything Hes got,
even His own Son because He cares so much! Yet, we dont care and take
Him for granted. We give more attention to things that we think are much more
important than Him. I was hurt when that student of mine sent the message clearly
that he doesnt care even though I was doing my best so that theyd learn and improve. I believe God is hurt
when we send him the message that we just dont care about Him and His great love and sacrifice. Im determined to keep caring because God cares. Im not about to give up on Leo because God has never given up on
me.
*Not his real name

Cast all your anxiety on Him

because He cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7

Generosity...

It could be said that financial problems are but a normal part of our lives. Often times,
we fall into despondency when we look at our rising financial obligations, or when we
think about the latest gadgets and the trendy clothes that we want to buy, but were
tapped out for cash.
We cannot deny the fact that because our wants and needs are always greater than what
we have in our wallet, chances are, we keep ourselves from getting involved in giving
or sharing what we have to others. And too often, we tend to gratify ourselves with temporal things before we look at the need of others.
Luke 2;15 states, And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for
a mans life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. Brothers and sisters, all the success we achieved and things we possess, however great or
small, are given by God; and we are held accountable for the rightful use of it.
As this year draws to an end, let us look at the blessings we have received and the blessings we have shared to others. Let us always remember Gods goodness for the past
year and look forward to another prosperous new year!

This year is about to pass, and another year is just at the corner. But before this year
ends with reminiscing and making resolutions for the coming year, the Sending Missionary Department of the 1000 Missionary Movement would like to express our sincere gratitude for your continuous support to our young people. Your sincere prayers
and wholehearted financial support is something we would always remember.
Thank you so much, and God bless you bountifully!
Thank You!

Lemuel Dinsag is a 6th Batch Batch missionary who is

now serving as Donor Relations Officer of the Sending
Missionary Department of 1000MM.
