The 4th Commandment - Take a break!
July beckons and warm weather and school holidays encourage us to take a
break, to slow down, and refresh for the autumn term ahead of us. We all need to
take time out in order to be able to give of our best when we are back at school or
work, paid or voluntary.
In fact God commands us to do it! The Ten Commandments in the Bible's Old
Testament are often thought of as a list of negatives, things not to do. And it's true
there is a list of 'do nots' things like: You must not commit murder. You must not
steal. You must not give false evidence against your neighbour.
But there are positive instructions too: the 'dos' rather than the 'do nots' and these
seem to me specifically about building positive relationships between us and God
and with one another (i.e. respect your father and mother), although arguably trying
hard to keep all the ten commandments will help strengthen that bond.
There is one commandment that seems quite a gift to us, especially as we move into
the holiday season the 4th Commandment: 'observe the Sabbath and keep it holy
. You have six days in which to do your work, but the seventh is a day of rest '.
God is recognising our need to take time out. He's also suggesting we use that time to
strengthen, our understanding and relationship with Him. It's a gift of time from God
to us. Simple to read; hard to do.
Yet we do need, in our busy, hectic lives, that special time out. Sometimes it's referred
to as 'Sabbathing'. Maybe that's a helpful expression for those of us who can't make
that time out on a Sunday, but do need to find it sometime. A regular slot for resting in
God. Letting God's peace and calm into our rush and bustle.
So my prayer for this holiday season is that each and every one of us might find that
special time when we can stop all those things we think we just have to do, but maybe
don't really, and just rest with God.
Jesus encouraged his community to keep the Sabbath, although it's fair to say he
wasn't afraid to use his gifts to help others on that day. But he did support one day in
the week for God, and a day not to work per se, but to be as a community, as a family.
The church is not the Vicar or the Ministry Team or indeed the building. The Church is
a family and it is the community.
Whatever you do this summer I hope you find time for Sabbathing special times of
rest and refreshment and fun with your family and with your community.
Have a great summer
Much Love
Revd Jane

Holly Meadows School

It is with mixed feelings that I have to tell you, I will be moving to pastures new
at the end of this summer. Having had four fantastic years at Holly Meadows
School, I will be leaving to take up my next Headship at Necton CE VA Primary
School. I am really looking forward to this next challenge and will be taking with
me lots of very happy memories, skills I have developed and, as the children
know, lots of smelly stickers that are my usual symbol of how proud and
delighted I am with their performance, whether in a piece of exceptional work, in
an act of kindness or in their improvement in something they have found
particularly difficult.
I have really enjoyed the time I have spent at Holly Meadows, getting to know
the families and children who have been in my care. The focus has been to
ensure that all the pupils achieved their very best in all aspects of our
curriculum, developing as a whole child ready to go out into the big wide world
to be successful. I have loved working with the staff who are talented, skilled,
committed and great fun; I will miss them all very much. We have laughed a lot
together and as a team we tried our best to make the most of every opportunity
we could create for the pupils.
Last summer we achieved our Good judgement. It was the culmination of many
hours of hard work completing our continuous cycle of assessments, planning,
doing and reviewing. I am very proud of that and so delighted that the Ofsted
inspector really felt that we were a school on the journey to outstanding.
As I leave, of course there would be an empty space in the Leadership Team
but, I am delighted to say, the governors have appointed my former colleague,
Jennie Wildsmith-Garton, to take over as Headteacher, filling that gap
admirably. She will be returning to Holly Meadows from her current post on the
1st September, ready to take our team on its continuing journey to excellence. It
is great to be handing over to someone who knows the school and all the
members of our existing school family so well. I trust her and know that she will
feel just as privileged as I am to hold this lead position and will bring her own
vision to build on the foundations we put down together.
This school has always had, since I arrived, as its motto: Inspire, Challenge,
Encourage. I think an aspect that has always been missing from that list, which
is one that we excel at, is our capacity to nurture the children. I therefore
suggest that Holly Meadows is a NICE School, one which always strives to
Nurture, Inspire, Challenge, Encourage everyone that it comes into contact
with.
Thank you to the governors, staff, parents, children and local community
members who have supported me and the school over the past four years; I will
miss you all very much. It has been a pleasure and a privilege and I wish you all
the very best for the future.
Rachael Williams, Headteacher, Holly Meadows School.

The Grimston Eye

We must forget the bad thoughts we have had about the lack of council cutting of the
grass verges around the village. With all the rain and glorious sunshine the grass
has lately put a spurt on - but today the cutters did not just cut the long grass and
leave till next time; no, they went over it several times gradually cutting it shorter.
This takes more time but it should look better, I think you will agree. Now we must
hope the time between this cut and the next will not be as long!
We must look forward to the tractor rally and give them a good support - it is always a
colourful and lively village attraction.
I went to the Methodist Church last Sunday to see what the Gap was all about. What
a surprise it was! A time of singing hymns and songs, (some traditional and some
composed by local folk including Gordon Okill and the late Rick Elsegood,) some
prayers and short thoughtful talks. The atmosphere was warm, friendly and
welcoming and the tea, coffee and home made cakes were much appreciated.
Apparently the Gap meets on the second Sunday each month and gives everyone
the opportunity to join in worship in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.

Greenfingers, June 2016

This year the charity we are supporting is the Norfolk West Blood Bikes (SERV
Norfolk West). David Parrish set up the charity five years ago. He explained to
the club what that volunteers provide a free out of hours courier service on
motorcycles to transport items vitally needed at short notice between hospitals in
Norfolk. It is not only blood which they carry, but also platelets, breast milk and
samples for testing amongst other items. Our financial support will be a great
help.
Members were thanked for their contributions to the Plant and Cake Sale in May,
which boosted our funds by 534.
We will be supporting the Friends of St Botolph's Vintage Tractor Road Run &
Country Fayre on June 19th, with our stall selling plants and other garden items.
The Sandringham Show garden is in progress. A further planning meeting will be
held on Tuesday, June 28th at 2pm at 47 Phillip Rudd Court.
The evening visit to Holme Hale Hall on July 12th replaces our monthly meeting.
The coach will leave Pine Parlour at 6.20pm. The Village Hall carpark will be
open and available. The coach is to be paid for from club funds, but a charge of
8 will be levied for entry to the gardens and tea and cake.
Bertie Bloomer, the hand knitted toy gardener kindly made and donated by Mary
Roper was won by Judy Woollatt. She guessed his name was Ross. He will be
a welcome addition to her Norfolk toy box for her grandchildren.
Our guest speaker, Howard Norton of the Delphinium Society, braved the
rainstorms on his drive from Hellesdon to educate us on the A to Z of growing and
caring for delphiniums. His talk was inspirational and his enthusiasm infectious.
Seeds and young plants were on sale at the end of his talk.
Plant of the Month winners were: 1st Margaret Gladman,
2nd Sandra Rawson, 3rd Cynthia Jackson.
Our next meeting will be the visit to Holme Hale Hall. At the following meeting in
the Village Hall on August 9th, we will welcome the return of Trevor Harrison from
Creake Plant Centre who will tell us about gardening on sandy soil. Visitors will
be most welcome to the August meeting.

Greenfingers Annual Show

Can you grow fruit, veg, plants and flowers?
Take photographs, bake, make preserves & chutneys?
Knit, sew, paint, arrange flowers or be generally 'crafty'?
If you can say 'yes' to any or all of these, this is an invitation to all residents of
Grimston, Congham, Roydon and Pott Row to take part in our Annual Show on
Saturday, September 3rd in the Village Hall, Pott Row.
We also have special classes for children to enter.
Why not pick up a schedule from the Post Office Store, Elsegood's Butchers or
ring Jenny on 01553 630301.

Thank you
Can you remember anything significant that happened to you in 1977? Avril
Chamberlain can. It's the year she volunteered to deliver Village Link magazine
in Back Lane and Hillings Way. She's being doing it ever since, whatever the
weather. At a conservative estimate, that's about 14,000 magazines that she
has delivered over the years, a quite remarkable achievement. Now she has
decided to call it a day so a huge 'thank you' and 'well done' Avril.
Which means we need someone to take over the round. There are 36
properties and ten deliveries per year. The bundle of magazines would be
delivered to you, usually on the last Saturday of the month. If you are able to
help, please contact Roger Haywood on 01553 630301 or email
haywood301@btinternet.com.

Grimston Parish Council News

The next Parish Council meeting is Monday 4th July at 7.30 p.m.
New Leziate Drove "Trod": The Parish Council are paying 50% of the cost of a
new trod extending from the end of the present trod to outside No. 69 Leziate
Drove, under the Parish Partnership with NCC Highways. Also they will be
restoring the original part of the Trod to 1 metre wide (it has become overgrown).
Hopefully it will be improved in a similar way to our 1st Trod along Lynn Road,
which is now extremely well used. A pavement would cost hundreds of thousands
of pounds and we would be on the waiting list for many years. A Trod is a cheaper
way to get a path and will be maintained and improved by Highways in future. The
work should start in the next 2-3 months and Highways request that you move an
obstructions or plants that may otherwise be damaged.
Website: The Parish Council is hoping to relaunch its website soon, when
Minutes, Agenda and Accounts should be available to view.

O2 Mobile Phone Signal Problems

About 2 months ago O2 did some work on the local transmitter and since then
we've had no signal, whereas the 2G signal (voice and texts) was always good
before. We've complained to O2 almost daily but they keep saying everything is
fine. I'm hoping people-power might make them take more notice so if you have
had a similar problem over the same timescale, would you please contact me at

BACKACHE
Backache is common, often coming on
suddenly with excruciating pain.
However, seeing the doctor
immediately is unlikely to help. Pain in
a leg is common and is due to sciatica.
Take adequate painkilling medication
such as paracetamol and ibuprofen.
Rest for up to 24 hours, but then be as
active as you can to mobilise and
strengthen your back, returning to work
as soon as possible. Prolonged rest
can cause further damage.
When to see the doctor
If backache fails to improve after
two weeks
If you have difficulty controlling
bladder or bowels
If you have weakness or
numbness of a leg

TiddlyPotts Playgroup+
Last month we celebrated our first year of opening with a fun Birthday Party! The
children enjoyed having their faces painted, making sparkly party crowns, planting
sunflowers, circus skills and a scrummy snack time!! The children were given
party bags containing yummy treats and the adults especially enjoyed the
birthday cake and hot chocolate with marshmallows and squirty cream!! We all
sang Happy Birthday to TiddlyPotts in cheerful chorus and it was a group effort to
blow out all the candles!
Thank you to everyone that came and made the morning special. A big thank you
to Crazy Bananas (Sally) for coming along and entertaining the children, we really
appreciate your support.
June was a busy month for us with our birthday celebrations as well as a visit
from Tempest Photography and The Barnado's Big Toddle fundraiser. As we head
into the last few weeks of the term we are sad to be saying goodbye to some of
our Tiddlers as they go off to 'Big School' in September. We wish them all the very
best in this new and exciting stage of their lives....we will miss them very much!
TiddlyPotts opens 9:30 - 11:30 every Friday during term time at Pott Row
Methodist Church. If you haven't been before, please pop down and see us for a
taster session (1.50 per child, 50p for additional children). We run an allocated
space system which Emma or Dionne will be happy to discuss with you.
Best Wishes
Emma & Dionne - Playgroup Leaders

St Lukes Pott Row.

St Botolphs Church has been given the bell that used to be in St Lukes Mission
Church in Pott Row before it was demolished in the early 1970's. The bell is
going to be on display in St Botolphs church and we are looking to commemorate
this on St Lukes day in October. We are looking into the history of the Mission
Church. If anyone has any photos of St Lukes or can remember anyone baptised,
married or funeral held there I would be grateful for any information. You can
contact me by email at joysmith61@tiscali.co.uk or telephone 01485 600402. Any
photos can be copied and returned. Joy Smith

The Last Word

As this is written it is just one week before the referendum on the European
Union. When the result is announced, as a nation and a people we are where
we are. There is no turning back. Some are pleased, some unhappy. Some will
gain, others will lose. The whole referendum saga has not done us proud. It
was a question put to the people, but it was so politicised that many were
confused about the facts. There was a good deal of being economical with the
truth. But one thig can be said for sure. 'What has been sown will be reaped'
as a nation in the coming years.
The priority for the immediate period is to get back to being one nation, one
people. There are a lot of bridges to be rebuilt, apologies to be offered, and
trust to be restored. We all know that a family, a house, a nation divided against
itself will fall. There is a need to get back on track with the rest of the nations in
our world, and play our part in the global village. It will be hard to look out after
so much looking in. But a nation that lives to itself cannot prosper in our
increasingly interconnected world with global emergencies threatening even
civilisation itself.
Is this overstating the case for the immediate future?
Perhaps it is a plea for greater national humility and an admission we can't
make it alone. As the old adage goes, no man is an island. We need to
address the question of where we put our trust, not only as an individual, but as
the nation we all love. I am told the well-known Christian Leader in the USA, Dr
Billy Graham, reads from the book of Proverbs every day. He will have
pondered many times the proverb given in chapter 14. Righteousness makes a
nation great; sin is a disgrace to any nation. v 34. It would be no bad thing if
the leaders that have lead us to where we are whether in or out of the
European Union adopt the habit of one of the world's greatest leaders and
advisor to a number of former Presidents in the White House.
