CONTEXTUALIZATION AND INDIGENIZATION
EsP Group: Island 1
Situation:
The context of all communities is a time when you are just starting your lives as a
community.
You are not aware of the presence of other communities.
You have not yet explored other place aside from the community you are assigned.
You are encouraged to use the modelling clay to shape animals, products, etc.
Using the Manila Paper, Crayons and Marking Pen, draw a representation of your
community.
Analysis:
a. Staple food, materials for making shelter and materials for clothing.
b. Major livelihood.
c. Most important technology/tool/weapon.
d. What were the major factors that shaped your lives, decisions and the things your
community was able to create/make/do?
e. What was the major products/creations of your community?
Processing:
Key Concepts:
Indigenous Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSPs) - are organized bodies of
knowledge, generated by a community through time.
Indigenous Learning System (ILS) - indigenous way of transferring/ passing of
knowledge
Culture - includes the various systems of community: Governance, health, education,
self-help processes, family and kinship, livelihood, etc.
Ancestral Domain - is not limited to the place or territory of the community but includes
the relationships, spiritual and cultural bonds which include cultural practices.

Analysis:
What are you going to do if somebody whom you do not know will come to your
community and share some knowledge/practices which are not familiar in your community?

What is Contextualization?
- Refers to the educational process relating the
curriculum to a particular:

What is Localization?
- Refers to the educational process of relating learning content specified in the curriculum
to local information and materials in the learners community.
What is Indigenization?
- Refers to the process of enhancing:
a. Curriculum Competencies
b. Education Resources
c. Teaching-Learning Process

- In relation to the:
a. Bio-geographical
b. Historical
c. Socio-cultural context of the
learners community

Policy Basis:
At the end of the session, the participants shall be able to:
- Define Contextualization, Localization and Indigenization.
- Differentiate Localization from Indigenization.
- Appreciate the importance of Contextualization in the implementation of K to 12.

FEATURES OF GOOD CLASSROOM ASSESSMENT
Classroom Assessment
- An on-going process of identifying, gathering, organizing and interpreting quantitative
and qualitative information about what learners know and can do.
- Teachers should employ classroom assessment methods that are consistent with
curriculum standards.
