IIMA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

CONSTITUTION
Note:
1. Revised with effect from May 15, 2016,

TITLE
Article I
The name of this Association shall be Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad Alumni
Association (herein referred to as the Association). Its title in short shall be IIMA Alumni.
The emblem of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (herein referred to as the
Institute) with the incorporation of its short title, i.e. IIMA Alumni shall be the Associations
emblem.
The registered office of the Association shall be situated at the Indian Institute of Management,
Vastrapur, Ahmedabad 380015.
OBJECTS
Article II
Section 2.1
TheIIMAAlumniAssociationwillhavethefollowinggoals:

1. WorktowardsthewelfareofIIMAandsupportitsmission
2. AdvancethecauseofIIMAAlumni
3. EstablishamutuallybeneficialrelationshipbetweenIIMAanditsalumni
4. ProvideamechanismformorecloselyconnectingIIMAwithitsAlumniAssociation
Chapterstoachievethefirstthreeobjectives
5. MentorandsupportIIMAAlumniAssociationChapterswithinIndiaandabroadand
provideinputsontheiractivitiesthatcanadvancethecauseofthechaptersandthatof
IIMA
6. ExchangeanddisseminateinformationaboutchapteractivitiesamongtheChaptersand
betweentheChaptersandIIMA
7. ProvideaforumfordiscussionbetweentheChaptersandIIMAandtohelpIIMAalumni
connectwithfellowalumni
8. Facilitatepartnershipswithcorporates,academia,stateandotherinstitutionstocreate
learningopportunitiesforfacultyandstudentsandtoenhancetheengagementofIIMA
withvariousstakeholders

9. Encouragealumniparticipationinreunionsandincreaseengagementofalumniwith
theInstitute.

Section 2.2
The Association shall publish journals and other materials and organize programmes,
conferences and seminars for promoting its objectives.
Section 2.3
The Association shall undertake such activities which shall be necessary to further the goals of
the Association and shall be conducive to its interests and objects.
TheactivitiespromotedbytheIIMAAlumniAssociationshallbe,whilenotlimitedto,from
amongstthefollowingillustrativesetofactivities.
a) PromoteanddisseminateInstituteresearch
b) CoordinatecasewritingwithindividualcapacityorincoordinationwithInstitute
faculties
c) Encourageentrepreneurship
d) Mentorcurrentstudents
e) Catalyzethepossibilityofteachingnewcourses
f) ChannelizealumnicontributionoffundstotheInstitutethroughitsDevelopmentOffice
g) Promoteinteractionamongalumnithroughvariousmechanismlikeformationof
specialinterestgroups(SIGs)inordertofosteractivitieslistedaboveandforthe
promotionofalumniwelfare

Section 2.4
The Association will have a two tier structure. There will be a Global Alumni Council (GAC) or
the Global Alumni Committee (GAC) will constitute as the Apex body. The Association through
the GAC may initiate, maintain and regulate chapters of the Association within India and abroad.
The Global Alumni Council shall decide on the recognition / de-recognition of a chapter.
Chapters will elect and operate through their own Executive Committees. Chapters refer to the
bodies in separate geographical locations that represent the IIMA Alumni in that location
through a formal body.
MEMBERSHIP
Article III
Section 3.1
Any person meeting one or more of the following qualifications shall be eligible to be a member
of this Association:

1. Any person who satisfies the eligibility criteria for alumni status laid down in the alumni
status policy from time to time.
2. Any person who has participated in the Programmes conducted by the Institute alone or
in collaboration with another Institute and in which certificates are not issued, provided
further that the participants of such programmes are certified by the Director of the
Institute as eligible for membership of the Association.
3. The Director and the Chief Administrative Officer of the Institute and the Dean (Alumni
and External Relations).
4. The Global Alumni Committee may also elect from amongst present or former members
of the permanent and the programme faculty of the Institute, donor members of the
Institute, and persons outside the Institute, who have rendered service with distinction to
the cause of management science development, as honorary members of the Association.
Section 3.2
Members shall pay such fee as may be determined by the Chapter Executive Committee for
membership of the Association and any services rendered by the Association. Such fees will be
administered by the Chapter Executive Committees.
Section 3.3
All members shall have the right to vote, propose, second, or be a candidate for any office of
their Chapter.
ADMINISTRATION
Article IV
Section 4.1
At the apex level, the Global Alumni Council or the Global Alumni Committee shall consist of:

1. UptoFiveprominentalumninominatedbytheInstitute,throughtheDirector.
2. NinemembersfromActiveLargeChapters(theChapterHeads;asof2016theseare
Mumbai,Delhi,Bangalore,Chennai,Ahmedabad,Hyderabad,London,NewYork,
Singapore).Initially,thesewillbetheelectedChapterPresidents
3. TworepresentativesfromotherChapters(Initially,tobeelectedfromtheChapter
Presidents)
4. ThreeexofficiomembersfromtheInstitute,namelytheDirector,DeanAER,andDean
Programmes.
5. IIMAChiefAdministrativeOfficershallbeSecretarytoIIMAGAC/GAC.
6. TheExecutiveCommitteeshallhave20memberswhichintheinitialroundofitsformation,
willbeselectedbytheDirectorofIIMA

Section4.2

PresidentandVicePresidentofIIMAGAC/GACshallbenominatedbytheDirector.Initially,
IIMAGACshallbenominatedforaperiodoftwoyears.Thereafter,electionswillbeconducted
bytheChapterstosendamembertotheGAC/GACeverytwoyears.Ifforsomereason,
electionsarenoheldbythechapters,IIMAthroughDeanAERwillnominateoneormoreofthe
elevenmembersfromtheindividualChaptersthathavenothadtheelections,asapplicable.

Section4.3

MeetingoftheGlobalAlumniCommitteeshallbecalledonceinayearwith30dayswritten
noticebytheDeanAER.Inaddition,theExecutiveCommitteemaymeetelectronically,through
emaildiscussionortele/videoconferencingorothertechnologies,asandwhensuchmeetings
becomenecessary.

Section4.4

TheGlobalAlumniCommitteeshallmeetphysicallyatleastonceayear,preferablyatthetime
oftheInstituteday,December11.IfthemajorityoftheGACmembersrequestforameetingat
anyothertime,inaddition,theDeanAERshallcallameetingwithinaperiodnotexceeding30
daysfromthereceiptoftherequestforameeting.

Section4.5

TheGlobalAlumniCommitteemaypassresolutionsbycirculation,accordingtorulesand
regulationsprevalentatthattime.

Section4.6

ForaGlobalAlumniCommitteemeeting,fiveCommitteemembersshallformthequorum.

Section4.7

TheGlobalAlumniCommitteeshallhavetheauthoritytodirectutilizationofthefundsofIIMA
AlumniAssociation.

Section4.8(a)

IntheeventtheofficeofthePresidentisvacated,theVicePresidentshallassumethedutiesof
thePresidentuntilthenextannualelection.

Section4.8(b)

ThePresidentshallhavethepowertoappointasuccessorforanyotherelectedposition
vacated,toserveuntilthenextelection.

Section4.9
ThedurationoftheGlobalAlumniCommitteeshallbeforaperiodoftwoyearsfromthedateof
assumingoffice.

Section 4.10
The minimum number of alumni required in a location for the formation of a Chapter is 15.
Chapters will elect their own Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretary and Treasurer. The term of
an office bearer will be 2 years.
FINANCE
ArticleV

Section5.1

InitialfundingtotheIIMAGACshallberaisedbytheInstitute.Contributionsanddonations
maybesolicitedfromalumniandanyotherpersonororganizationforthepurposeofIIMA
GAC.

Section5.2

AllfundsoftheIIMAGACshallbeusedexclusivelyforthepurposesoftheIIMAAlumni
Association.ThesewillbeaseparateledgeraccountonthebooksofaccountsofIIMA.

Section5.3

AllfinancialexpendituresoftheIIMAGACwillfollowthenormsofIIMAasstipulatedfromtime
totime..

Section5.4

WhileDeanAERwillapprovealldaytodayexpendituresoftheIIMAGAC,finalauthoritywill
vestwiththeDirectorIIMA.

Section5.5
Chaptersmayinstitutetheirownstructureandfundingmechanisms.Theusualformisan
annualmembershipfeepayabletotheChapter.

AUDIT AND ANNUAL REPORT


Article VII
Section 7.1

At the end of every financial year (April 1 to March 31), the Secretary shall prepare a financial
statement of income and expenditure duly audited by a Chartered Accountant. The audited
statements of account shall be circulated amongst members by the Secretary.
AMENDMENT
Article VIII
Section 8.1
A referendum vote for the Association members shall be conducted by the Secretary on the
request of the Global Alumni Committee or 10 Chapter members to amend the Constitution of
the Association. Thirty days from the date of mailing shall be allowed for voting and three-fourth
of the majority of all votes registered shall be decisive. Any amendment of the Constitution shall
be circulated among the members by the Secretary within 30 days of the expiry of the time limit
for voting.
Section 9.2
All other matters shall be decided by simple majority vote of the members present at a duly
constituted IIMA Alumni Association Global Alumni Committee. Chapters may evolve their
own bye laws so long as they are not inconsistent with the aims and objectives of the alumni
association.
