Practice Tests

The Interpreting Diagrams selection test measures applicants' ability to use symbols and codes to locate
objects on a map or diagram, and to determine the object's status. The test consists of two diagrams. Each
diagram is followed by multiple-choice questions.

INTERPRETING DIAGRAMS PRACTICE TEST

This practice test is similar in content and structure to the real selection test. We recommend that you time
yourself while taking the practice test to get a feel for how much time you will have to complete the real
selection test. It may be to your advantage to complete all practice test questions. Answers for the practice
test questions are provided at the end of the practice test. You should consult these answers only after
completing all the practice test questions.

ANSWERS AND EXPLANATIONS

1. The correct answer is B. There are 10 phone poles in sector U6. To answer this item, first you must find
sector U6, which is at the cross-section of row U and column 6. Next, you should identify the symbols
for phone poles as the following:

So, count the number of these symbols in sector U6. You should count a total of 10 phone poles, so
mark answer choice B.

2. The correct answer is B. There are 6 repeaters located in the sectors in which the parks are located. To
answer this item, you should first identify the park symbols as the following:

Next, you should identify which sectors these parks are located in. You should see from the map that
Pine Lake Park is located in sectors V5 and W5. You should see from the map that Wildwood Park is
located in Sectors V6 and W6. Next, you should identify the symbol for a repeater as the following:

So, count the number of repeaters in sectors V5, V6, W5, and W6. You should count a total of 6
repeaters, so mark answer choice B.

3. The correct answer is C. There are 14 A&H Phone Company poles made of Material 1 installed in
Sections S and T. To answer this item, you must first find sections S and T, which are the rows in the
map labeled S and T. Next, you should identify the symbol for the A&H Phone Company poles made of

= Alliance Phone Co. Pole

= A&H Phone Co. Pole (Material 2)

So, count the number of Alliance Phone Company poles and A&H Phone Company poles made of
Material 2 in section T. You should count a total of 15 Alliance and A&H (Material 2) Phone Company
poles in section T, so mark answer choice C.

6. The correct answer is D. There are 5 sectors in which you will find both above-ground cable wire and

Next, you should notice that there are both types of cable in sectors S5, T5, S7, T7, and W6. Thus,
there are a total of 5 sectors in which you find both above-ground cable wire and underground fiber optic
cable, so mark answer choice D.

7. The correct answer is B; there are 5 repeaters that would be needed to install all the requested
repeaters. To answer this item, you must first find sections 5 and 6, which are columns 5 and 6 on the
map. Next, you should identify the symbol for a repeater to be installed as the following:
= Repeater to be installed
So, count the number of repeaters to be installed in sections 5 and 6. You should count a total of 5
