Introduction
The city of Mapleland Oregon has implemented a fiber ring network to monitor power meters in
residents homes. Since the network has the capacity to do more the city wants to expand the services
to allow internet access for residents and local businesses. The network also supports a hybrid fibercoax system that is used to provide internet services. Figure 1 shows a rough diagram of the main
components and how they are connected in the network.

Section 1: More Information

This section outlines the additional information that is required to create a more efficient network
design. The information will also help to generate a more accurate network diagram.

1-A: Geography
A map or some kind of example of the cities geography would allow for a more efficient design. The lay
out of the city also gives the network designer a better idea of what kind of hardware and how much
cable is needed.

1-B: Baseline tests

Baseline statistics for the current network are needed so the network designer is able to determine if
the current set up would be compatible with the new network design and hardware.

Section 2: MFN Wireless Network

This section outlines the possible city wide wireless network that the city would like to implement. This
section also details the other information that would need to be obtained in order to create the wireless
network.

2-A: City lay out

The lay out of the city well need to be taken into account. Wireless hot shots well have to be set up in
optimal location to provide strong coverage. A secondary systems would need to be installed to handle
the public wireless network separately from the current network that is installed in the city.

2-B: Hardware
The appropriate hardware would need to be installed to support the additional traffic and the hot shops
that would need to be installed around the city.

Section 3: Security Concerns

This section outlines the possible security concerns that could arise from the city wide wireless network.

3-A: Secure Connection

The network would have to be an open wifi connection to allow the people to access it. That means that
anyone can access it. That gives black hat hackers an in to the network. It would require strong security
measures to prevent anyone from accessing the cities network through the wifi.
