Coffee is the third most popular drink in the world. Only
tea and water are more popular than coffee. Coffee beans
are actually the seeds of coffee cherries that grow on
coffee plants. The beans are green when they are picked.
Most of the coffee that is sold in coffee shops and grocery
stores is brown. It becomes brown because the beans
have been roasted at high temperatures. The roasting
gives the beans their different flavors. Some coffees are
darker and stronger-tasting than other coffees. You can
buy green coffee beans from some stores if you want to
roast your own beans.

Pronunciation, Word Stress

In English, we do not pronounce each syllable with the same
force. In each word, we accentuate ONE syllable. One
syllable in the word is stressed and all the other syllables are
pronounced with less stress.
Lets take 3 words: deluge, tornado and experimental. Do
they sound the same when spoken? No. Because we accentuate (stress) ONE syllable in each word. And it is not always
the same syllable. So the shape of each word is different.

Complete:
1. The Earth _________ around the ________ and
________________ occur. *
2. In ____________ leaves are green, __________ blossom
sometimes the weather is __________.
3. In ________________, you can go to the beach and drink
cold juice.

Season (invierno) and the Dry Season (verano).

6. Read the three students comments about living in the
United States. Then tell a what aspects were most difficult for
Lauren, Allan, and Isabella.

Student life in the USA

When I arrived in the USA, the most difficult thing for me
was the language. Even though I took some English
courses, it seemed to me I couldnt even understand
a word. As time went by, I started to understand things
better, and I felt more confident
to speak. Now, I have some
friends from different countries
and I can practice the language
with them. Lauren, 19.

Since I arrived here, I have missed the food in my country.

I like eating a lot of: rice, potatoes, meat, salad, soup, and
juice. Here, I dont have a meal like in my homeland, and
the prices make a difference! In my country, I can eat a lot
for no more than $5, and here I
need more than $10 for a basic
meal. This is the only thing I
miss from my country, well
my family and friends, too!

At the beginning, everything was wonderful for me: the

and I couldnt talk to them
without crying. Now I feel better.

LESSON 2 Internet Safety

1. Read the following article about the internet usage around
the world. Guess the words to fill in the gaps.

Twenty ___________ ago, kids in school had never even heard

of the internet. Now, Ill bet you cant find a single person in your
school who hasnt at least heard of it. In fact, many of us use it on a
regular basis and even have access to it from our homes! The net in
___________ really stands for network. A ___________ is two
or more computers connected together so that information can be
___________, or sent from one computer to another. The internet
is a vast resource for all types of information. You may enjoy using
it to do research for a school project, downloading your favorite
songs or communicating with friends and family. Information is
accessed through web pages that companies, organizations and
individuals create and post. Its kind of like a giant bulletin board
that the whole world uses! But since anyone can put anything on
the internet, you also have to be careful and use your best judgement
and a little common sense.
Just because you read something on a piece of paper someone sticks
on a bulletin board doesnt mean its good information, or even
correct, for that matter. So you have to be sure that whoever posted
the ___________ knows what theyre talking about, especially
if youre doing ___________! But what if youre just emailing
people? You still have to be very careful. If youve never met the
person that youre communicating with online, you could be on dangerous ground! You should never give out any personal information
to someone you dont know, not even your name! And just like you
cant ___________ the information on every website out there,
you cant rely on what strangers you meet on the internet tell you
either. Just like you could make up things about yourself to tell
someone, someone else could do the same to you

1. Read about Electronic Gadgets. Do you agree that there are

disadvantages by their usage?

ELECTRONIC GADGETS
A gadget is a small tool such as a
machine that has a particular function to
increase the efficiency of something.
Nowadays, gadgets are a very essential
part of our lives. We need gadgets to
make and promote our business, or to be
connected with the latest news about it.
Electronic gadgets have made lives much
easier for: home makers, businessmen,
executives and entrepreneurs as they can
monitor and work while they are away.
They are also a great source for
entertainment such as music players,
televisions, i-pads, i-pods, etc..
However, using gadgets also has its disadvantages. Most gadgets are powered
by electricity and they produces harmful
waves which affects our eyes and bodies.
People may suffer from common problems like indigestion, extreme fatigue,
Brain Fog, etc.. Also, the radiation
produced by cellphones can affect our
brains which can cause cancer.
Gadgets make us more and more
dependent on them. The use of gadgets
makes people mechanical. Nowadays,
many human beings are not even able to
do simple tasks without getting help from
a gadget.
In conclusion, gadgets have advantages
and disadvantages, but they are very
important in our daily lives.

LESSON 4 Comparing Cultures

A High-Tech World

1. LETS COMPARE CULTURES!

GROUP WORK:
In small groups discuss these questions.
a. In small groups think of inventions that have
changed our lifestyle in important ways.
b. Read the description and talk about the
technological products described there.
c. Do you have these products at home? How do you
use them?
HOW HAS TECHNOLOGY AFFECTED YOUR
LIFE?
Try imagining your life without technology. Without alarm
clocks, refrigerators, computers, telephones and so on.
It would be very different from what we are accustomed
to today. The truth is, all of us rely on technology a great
deal to get through the day. Whether its at work, at
home, or at school. I know my family depends greatly
on technology. Without technology our lives would all be
much different.
One of the useful products of technology would be the television. Usually, my family would sit together in the living
room to watch television programs together after dinner.
During this time, we would occasionally talk about the
shows that are being broadcasted. This allows my family
to interact with each other more often.
In the twenty-first century, one of the most important technologies would be the Internet. The Internet is a system,
which allows people to communicate globally. I personally
use it for: Internet mailing (email), instant messaging, online shopping and online gaming. With the Internet, I am
able to keep close contact with my aunt who has migrated to France. Online gaming is also another big part of
my life. When I play games over the Internet, I am able to
make friends with people from other countries.
Another part of technology in my life would be the mobile
technology. In the olden days, people had problems
when they wanted to communicate with their relatives in
far-away places Now, with mobile technology, peoples
lives are made easier as they can contact each other
anywhere and anytime they want to. I personally have a
cell phone, too, and it has become more than a necessity
in my life.

3. Do you think technology is good or bad for teenagers and
young adults?
LIFESTYLE (MODERNITY Vs WELLBEING MOVEMENT)
Modern life is bringing happiness and new expectations for
some families nowadays. But others are suffering the consequences that the new lifestyle has imposed on peoples habits.
Technology and the communication revolution now is
becoming the main aspect on teenagers and young adults
concerns. They are more aware and able to manage the
gadgets that those artifacts bring to daily activities. At home,
after school, the children get distracted by the television or by
the computers or mobiles through the shows and gadgets that
diverts their attention from more productive or healthy activities. Family relations are broken and the communication and
understanding between family members is lost.
Teenagers and young adults spend more time in front of the
computer forfeiting downtime to less social and family
relationships.
People are thinking that all these technology is helping to
create a better life. However, Sociologists and critical thinkers
believe that the technological fad is bringing some issues
from the households to the workplaces.
Children and young people dont dress according to their
native culture anymore. They dont even eat or drink traditional dishes. Today, a boy or a girl is not playing the old
games that once their relatives used to play. All of these have
brought the acculturation of society. The need and wishes of
modern youth are very different from those of their parents.
When asked the teenagers what are they doing during their
free time, they say: I am watching television right now or Im
playing computer games. They dont say: Im reading a book
right now. They dislike reading because watching television
or playing online role playing games is easier and they do
not have to use their own imagination. Teenagers prefer to
spend free time in front of a computer rather than to walk, play
football, go to a swimming pool, or just simply meet a friend in
the park and have a chat.

LESSON 2 A Traditional Game

Warm Up

Do you think playing chess is fun?
Do you want to play?

All About Chess

Chess is called the Game of Kings. It has been around
for a long time. People have been playing it for over 500
years. Chess is based on an even older game from India.
The chess we play today is from Europe.
Chess is a two-player game. One player uses the black
pieces. The other uses the white pieces. Each piece
moves in a special way. One piece is called the king. Both
players have one. The players take turns moving their
pieces. If one player lands his piece on the opponents
piece, then he takes it. The game ends when a player
loses his or her king. There are a few more rules, but that
is basically it.
Some people think that chess is more than a game. They
think that it makes the mind stronger. Good chess players
use their brains. They take their time. They think about
what will happen next. These skills are very useful in chess
as well as in life. Chess is kind of like a work out for the
mind.
You dont always have lots of time to think when playing
chess. There is a type of chess with short time limits. Its
called Blitz Chess. In Blitz chess, each player gets ten
minutes to use for the whole game. Your clock runs during
your turn. You hit the time clock after your move. This stops
your clock, but it also starts the other players clock. If you
run out of time, you lose. Games of Blitz Chess are really
fast-paced.
Chess is not just for people. Computers have been playing
chess since the 1970s. At first they did not play well. They
made quite a few mistakes. As time went on they grew
stronger. In 1997, a computer beat the best player in the
world for the first time. It was a computer called Deep Blue.
Deep Blue was big. It took up a whole room. By 2006 a cell
phone could beat the best players in the world. Chess sure
has come a long way. Dont you think so?

La Tomatina is a one day Spanish event where participants

throw tomatoes at each other in the Valencian town of Buol.
The actual battle lasts just one hour.
There is much debate over whether this is a festival or not,
with both tourist companies and various locals having differing
opinions, whatever you choose to call it, La Tomatina is quite
the attraction!
It is thought to have originated in 1945, facing several bans
and sanctions throughout its time. However its international
popularity has since the festival ingrained in Spanish culture,
and mimicked in several countries.
As you can imagine from the style of this festival, the history
behind it is a little unusual. In the annual gigantes y cabezudos
parade in Bunol a small fight broke out between some young
men. Due to the close proximity of a fruit stall they began to
throw vegetables at each other.
As you would expect they were arrested by the local police but
after a movement by the people of the town, they were all
released. The next year, the young men returned, this time
with their own tomatoes to avoid another night in the cells.
Although they had brought their own tomatoes this time they
were still chastised by the council.
Over the following years the festival was banned, reinstated
and restricted but regardless something happened every year.
The first year the festival was banned a group of youths set
up the funeral of the tomato with a tomato in a coffin and live
music over the town.
The festival is now free to run annually and the tomatoes are
even grown especially for La Tomatina.
After the hour of tomato throwing, hoses are provided for
participants to clean off themselves and the streets.
Because of the acidity in the tomatoes and the hoses the
streets are their cleanest after the festival.
