Assignment 3

1. The parts used in the diverting machine are to be moved from one conveyor
track to another conveyor track. By pressing a pushbutton switch the frame of
the diverting machine is pushed forward. The part is moved over and
transported onwards in the opposite direction. By pressing another pushbutton
switch the frame is returned to its start position as shown below in Fig. below.
Draw a pneumatic circuit and electric circuit of the system.

2. The circuit below illustrates an electro-pneumatic system. Answer the following

questions:

a.
b.
c.
d.

What are the type of the switches S1, S2 and K1?

Is the electric circuit above direct or indirect? Explain why.
What is the name of the part which is labeled as Y1?
Explain what happens when the switch S1 is pressed. Does the cylinder
extend? Explain why.

e.

Explain what happens when the switch S2 is pressed. Does the cylinder
extend? Explain why.

f.

Explain how to retract the above cylinder.

3. Explain briefly the meaning of latching in electro-pneumatic circuits

4. Using a sorting device, parts are to be transferred from conveyor belt as in Fig.
1. By pressing the pushbutton switch, the piston rod of a single-acting cylinder
pushes the part off the conveyor belt. When the pushbutton is released, the
piston rod returns to the retracted end position. Develop a electro-pneumatic for
the system.

5. The double acting cylinder in Fig.4.3 below is used to push a plank of wood
under a sanding (polishing) belt. By pressing a pushbutton switch the sliding
table with the plank of wood is positioned under the belt. Another pushbutton
switch is used to return back the sliding table to its start position but after the
cylinder rod has reached its full extended position.

a. Developed direct control

b. Developed indirect control

6. Wooden planks are to be pushed along from a gravity feed magazine to a

clamping device. By pressing a pushbutton switch one plank is pushed by the
slide out of the gravity feed magazine. After the slide has reached the forward
end position it is returned to its start position. Design pneumatic and electrical
circuit of electro pneumatic system below.

7. The pneumatic press that is shown in the Fig. below has to be operated by two
switches at the same time in order to protect the operator hands from any
possible injury during the press operation. The press will be released
automatically by a limit switch. However, another switch has to be provided to
release the press in case of the limit switch malfunction.

8. The circuit below illustrates an electro-pneumatic system. Answer the

following questions:

a) Is the electric circuit above directly or indirectly controlled? Why?

b) Which switch is used to operate the circuit?

c) Which branch represents the latching circuit?
d) Which switch is used to release (unlatch) the circuit?
e) Explain, how to extend the piston of the above cylinder?
f) Explain, how to retract the above cylinder?
9. Using a transfer station blocks are to be transferred from a magazine to a
processing station. The blocks are pushed out of the magazine by cylinder A
and transferred to the processing station by cylinder B. The piston rod of
cylinder A may only return when the piston rod of cylinder B has reached the
retracted end position. The magazine is monitored by means of limit switches.
If there are no more blocks in the magazine, it is not possible to start the cycle.
This is indicated by means of push button to act as a sensor. The control is to
be operated in single cycle.
Cylinder B

a. Design complete Pneumatic circuit.

b. Design complete Electrical circuit.

10.A+ B+ A- BBased on the sequence above:

a. Design a pneumatic circuit
b. Design an electrical circuit for direct and indirect control.
