GSM BSS Feature List

1. GENERAL
1.1 Purpose
This document lists the features of Alcatel BSS system. Up to BSS release B11, it corresponds to a
contractual agreement between Product Line and Technical Division. Some features of later
releases that are already identified may also be presented, but for information only.
The features that are listed are those selected by Product Management for presentation to
customers; they may differ from those listed in the technical feature lists of the Technical
Division; such differences are only in order to be more adapted to customer presentation:
- name of some features may be different from that in the Technical Feature List
- in some cases, several features of the technical Feature List have been grouped in a single
feature
It is intended that the feature names and feature numbers of the present list become the
reference in any document exchanged between Alcatel and a customer; respecting these names
and references is absolutely necessary (especially due to the great number of features and
customers) to be able to keep track of the evolution of the features status, which is sooner or
later required.
This document is a generic document from which Feature Lists submitted to customers should be
derived. It must not be delivered itself without having been customized as explained below.
Such a customization is necessary since it is impossible to produce once for all a document that
fits all needs and since those needs differ offer by offer.
It must be stressed also that before presenting a feature list to a customer, the status of the
corresponding features and releases must be checked in the Product Index

GSM BSS Feature List

2. HOW TO READ IT
Features are presented in a table with following header row:
Number

Old numb. Feature name

Note

Column B gives the BSS release from which the feature is available on, under the form Bx.y.
In most cases, a feature available in a given release is also available in following releases;
nevertheless some features are no more available from a certain release on; in this case, the first
release for which this feature is no more supported is written in column .

3. HOW TO DERIVE A CUSTOMISED DOCUMENT

There are three aspects in the customization process:
- the first deals with the way the feature list is presented; some examples:
- in some contexts, one may want not to make the difference between the different
Bx.y releases, but only refer to release Bx
- one may want to highlight a specific set of releases, e.g. removing older releases
- features related to older generations of equipment (marked "Phased-Out Eqpt.")
should be removed for offers that do not involve support of those equipment.
- the information on optional features has to be adapted to the commercial context:
Indication Option in column Note indicates that the corresponding feature
is known at the date of release of present document to be, or to have been,
optional; please refer to the relevant document ("BSS Software Fees") for final
check of list and status of such features.
- the second, compulsory, deals with introduction (or non introduction) of additional features
- the third is the adaptation of the introductory chapter to the context of the customer,
including of course the removal of present chapter HOW TO DERIVE A CUSTOMISED
DOCUMENT
Additional features are those that are not generic; generic features being those that can be
presented to any customer. (Additional has no commercial meaning and does not refer to the
way the features should be sold, basic or option).
Some reasons for which features may be additional are the following:
- some features are only available in a specific technical environment (for example only with
some switches)

GSM BSS Feature List

- some features are costly to manage, since they require from the customer a sufficient
technical expertise; they should not be presented to customers that do not really need or
want them and that are not ready to have the required technical expertise within their
teams (This is the case for Q3 for example).
- some features are only applicable to customers with ancient generations of equipment and
should not be presented to new customers.
- some features are only available from a certain maintenance release of a main release. For
those features, it has to be checked that the deployement date is compatible with the
availability date of the maintenance release.
- some features are in restriction and cannot be sold anymore; but they are kept in the list as
they might be reintroduced later.
Additional features are marked Additional in first column (before feature number)
A first step is to decide which additional features are to be presented. Lines corresponding to
features that should not be presented should be deleted. Then the Additional in first column
should be deleted for additional features that are to be presented (The customer should not know
whether a Feature is internally considered as Generic or Additional).
The following chapter gives the justification for BSS additional features presented in the feature
list below.

GSM BSS Feature List

4. FEATURE LIST
The table below presents the feature list:
It has to be noted that from B10, RNO, LASER and NPA are replaced by a product called Network
Performance Optimizer (NPO). Four optional packages are proposed for NPO: Analyzer, Optimizer,
Inventory and Availability. These options are ordered, i.e. Optimizer option requires Analyzer
option or Inventory option requires Analyzer and Optimizer options. This means that there are 3
different possible offers: Analyzer only option, Analyzer + Optimizer option and Analyer +
Optimizer + Inventory + Availability.
