This module will instruct how to verify the state of the storage system and attached servers.
If this activity will cause access to an SP to be interrupted (e.g. NDU, SP replacement), any hosts
attached to the storage system must be able to maintain access to the storage system. It is the
customer's responsibility to check non-EMC host-based software and host hardware for supported
levels, HBA settings etc.
P Done
Ensure that the customer is aware of this and has made any necessary updates.
Refer them to Knowledgebase solution emc231912 which gives the following information:
.a The following page on Powerlink: Home > Support > Product and Diagnostic Tools > CLARiiON
Tools > CLARiiON Software Update Tools > CLARiiON Software Update (Standard). The customer
should perform Step 2 to run HAVT (High Availability Verification) for all servers attached to the
storage system, and then Step 3 to run the Prepare for Install portion of the Software Assistant to
verify that all servers are in an expected availability state.
.b The Technical Advisories that appear when NST or USM are launched. These warn of issues that
could affect the upgrade.
.c Knowledgebase solution emc99467: What are the Initiator, Arraycommpath, and Failovermode
settings for PowerPath, DMP, PVLinks, and native failover software?
.d Knowledgebase solution emc203900: How EMC helps customer to maintain supported
architecture. This is a general document covering Symmetrix, CLARiiON, and switches.
Information pertaining to CLARiiON will already have been covered in steps (a) and (b) above.

Note: For current support for ALUA, please consult the E-Lab Interoperability Navigator. See the
Installation Roadmap for CLARiiON Storage Systems P/N 069001166 for the required failovermode,
initiator type settings etc. for any failover software that is not listed.
Note: The Trusted column should be ignored as it applies to legacy arrays only.
Note: The customer should have the final decision to continue host access during this service event.

Ensure you have a Windows management station or service laptop with IP connectivity to both SPs
Verify connectivity by performing a ping command to both SPs.
.3
Check for any fault lights being present, investigate cause and resolve before proceeding with the
assessment.
Check the event logs or SPcollects for any drives reporting a high number or long history of soft
media errors. (0x6A0 or 0x820) To prevent a possible Data Unavailable event, proactively replace
any drive exhibiting this behavior.
