Engineering Our Future...Today!!!

Project Lead The Way

7th Grade

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) provides a comprehensive

approach to STEM Education. Through activity-, project-,
and problem-based curriculum, PLTW gives students in
kindergarten through high school a chance to apply what
they know, identify problems, find unique solutions, and
lead their own learning. Rockwood School District realized the importance of STEM education 10 years ago and
brought this curriculum to our middle and high school
students. We have had thousands of students successfully
complete this program. Our high school students ven have
the opportunity to earn college credit!!

This is a semester long class that incorporates the

Design and Modeling and Automation and Robotics
curriculums. In the Design and Modeling curriculum
students apply the design process to solve problems
and understand the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives. Using Autodesk design software, students create a virtual image of their designs
and produce a portfolio to showcase their innovative
solutions.
In Automation and Robotics students trace the history,
development, and influence
of automation and robotics
as they learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer,
machine automation, and
computer control systems.
Students use the VEX Robotics platform to design,
build, and program real-world objects such as traffic
lights, toll booths, and robotic arms.

Our Middle School Program

Middle school is the perfect time for students to explore
and learn that there is more than one way to reach a solution. PLTW Gateway provides an engineering curriculum
for middle school students that challenges, inspires, and
offers schools variety and flexibility. Students get rigorous
and relevant experiences through activity-, project-, and
problem-based learning. They use industry-leading technology to solve problems while gaining skills in communication, collaboration, critical-thinking, and creativity. This
program is offered at each ockwood Middle School.

6th Grade
In the Science of Technolo
gy curriculum students
research the impacts that
technology of yesterday,
today, and the future have
on our society. Students also
apply the concepts of physics to STEM activities and projects, including designing and building a Rube Goldberg
marble maze. This is a 9 week class that introduces students to the PLTW curriculum.

8th Grade
This semester long class has Flight and Space and
Magic of Electrons. In the Flight and Space unit the
exciting world of aerospace comes alive through
Flight and Space. Students explore the science behind
aeronautics and use their knowledge to design, build,
and test a bottle Rocket. In Magic of Electrons students explore electricity,
the behavior and parts
of atoms, and sensing devices. They learn
knowledge and skills in
basic circuitry design,
and how the world
works around them.
