garter was replaced with
the bouquet in many
wedding traditions and

next one to marry.
Today, many brides
continue to look forward
to the tossing of the
bouquet. Rather than
throw their own wedding

Migas are a tasty way to introduce
your family to a historic
celebration and a meatless, yet-
satisfying meal.
MEXICAN MIGAS
1 tablespoon canola oil
1 tablespoon butter
6 sun-dried tomatoes in oil,
chopped, OR 1 medium tomato,
seeded and diced
1 cup salsa of choice
2 cups corn tortilla chips, crushed
into large pieces
8 eggs, beaten
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack
cheese
1. Using a large skillet, heat the
pan on high for 1 minute. Add the
oil, butter, tomatoes and salsa.
Cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Crush
1 cup of chips and add them to
the pan, stirring to combine them
with the salsa. Reduce heat to
medium and cook for 1 minute.
2. Reduce heat to low and add the
beaten eggs to the mixture in the
pan. Cook the eggs, gently
scraping the bottom of the pan to
remove the cooked egg and allow
the raw egg to make contact with
the heat. Proceed until the eggs are
cooked but still soft, about 3 to 5
minutes.
3. Add the remaining tortilla chips
to the pan. Mix gently to combine.
Sprinkle the migas with the
shredded cheese. Serve
immediately. Makes 4 servings.

ELDRED WWII MUSEUM

The Eldred WWII Museum opened on Memorial Day 1996
and the Memorial Day Weekend continues to be an important
time of remembering the persons who have served and
sacrificed for the causes of freedom. In the midst of family
gatherings, picnics and parades, it is still important to pause
and remember why we have our freedoms.
Our 2010 Memorial Day Weekend theme is “Meet the
Veterans” and will provide a family-friendly event with
opportunities to thank some of our local veterans and
remember our fallen heroes. The entire weekend’s events are
free and open to the public.
Saturday, May 29, the Museum will be open from 10am to
4pm with a full day of activities. Veterans who served and the
public who would like to say thank you are invited to meet in
Mitchell Paige Hall. The times for veterans to meet are as
follows: WWII at 10; Korea at 11; Vietnam at 1; Gulf War at 2;
Iraq & Afghan at 3. There will be video games for the kids in
Tank Mountain. Special displays and raffles will be held in the
Blue Room. A list of available raffle items will be available on
the Museum’s web site.
Sunday, May 30, the Museum will be open from 1 to 4pm with
a guest speaker at 2pm. Our guest speaker, Mr. Robert
Longnecker is a Vietnam Veteran who served in the Marine
Corps. Following his service, he taught history at Otto-Eldred
High School. His personal experience and knowledge of history
made history come alive for many students. He recently retired
from teaching and is now serving on the Museum’s Board of
Directors.
Monday, May 31, the Museum will recognize Memorial Day
beginning with Eldred’s local parade at 11am and guest
speakers at 2pm. Our speakers will be local veterans who will
speak on the subject, “What Memorial Day Means to a
Veteran.” Guest speakers will include Capt. William
Scheiterle, USMC Retired. Capt. Scheiterle served with the
First Marine Division in the Pacific during WWII.

Twin Tiers Theater Festival- The TTTF Committee is
thrilled to announce, in conjunction with the Cattaraugus
County Arts Council, the official inaugural season of the Twin
Tiers Theater Festival in Olean, NY. The festival company will
produce seven plays and one musical in the Oak Hill Historic
District, featuring Broadway, Off-Broadway, Film and
Television talent. The NYC company will make its home at the
Washington Street Theater, which is undergoing major
renovations in order to accommodate more seating, as well as
state-of-the-art upgrades creating an intimate, high-end Off-
Broadway style venue for both the festival and the Olean
community. The musical production will be held in Oak Hill
Park, in conjunction with the Southern Tier Symphony.
Performances begin this summer, on June 24, 2010. Watch out
this week for the announcement of the TTTF website and the
release of tickets for sale! Join us in supporting this historic
inaugural season and fantastic opportunity for our city!

“A River in the Sky” by Elizabeth Peters / Reviewed by Ealish Waddell
In her newest novel, “A River in the Sky,” the prolific Elizabeth Peters
returns for a 19th time to the world of Amelia Peabody Emerson, one of
her most endearing heroines. Archaeologist, feminist, detective,
champion of the downtrodden and a remarkable hand with a steel-tipped
umbrella: Amelia is all these things, and still every inch a Victorian lady.
Set in 1910, this story finds the Emerson clan setting out for a digging
season not in their usual Egyptian stomping grounds, but in Palestine,
where they’ve been sent to trail an amateur archaeologist that the British
government suspects of being a spy for the increasingly influential
Germans. To the Emersons, the only thing this Morley seems to be guilty
of is idiocy, as he plans to dig right on Jerusalem’s Temple mount, a site
sacred to and zealously guarded by no less than three different religions.
But a dead body at the dig site soon makes it definite that someone is up
to skullduggery. When their son Ramses, on a dig elsewhere in the
region, is kidnapped, the Emersons make it their business to push
through both hypocrisy and bureaucracy and get to the bottom of it.
Peters’ rollicking writing style is both a gentle parody of and fond
homage to the popular romantic adventures of the 19th century, with a
dose of modern sensibility that reflects the changing world of the early
20th. This installment is heavy on political intrigue, but the Middle
Eastern settings and perspectives add some spice for readers more
familiar to the Western version of those events. Peters, a trained
Egyptologist, can be relied upon to season her stories with fascinating
doses of historical facts both ancient and modern.
It’s always a pleasure to hang out with the loving, exasperating and
hilarious Emersons, and their latest adventure is no exception.

• On June 9, 1772, the British vessel Gaspee runs aground off the
coast of Rhode Island while pursuing the Hanna, an American
smuggling ship. That evening, John Brown, an American merchant
angered by high British taxes on his goods, rowed out to the Gaspee
with a number of other colonists and set the ship afire. When British
officials attempted to prosecute the colonists involved in the “Gaspee
Affair,” they found no Americans willing to testify against their
countrymen.

On Wednesdays, 10-11am from July 7 - August 11 there
will be Club Meetings at the Library. One of the water
activities planned includes: a Jamestown Audubon Society
Show, called “Wetland Animals”, highlighting water “critters”
that live in our area.
Adult Summer Reading Club lets adult readers (a.k.a.
Puddle Jumpers) “Water Their Minds” at the library. Each
book read is recorded in a Reading Log folder and enters the
reader in a Grand Prize Drawing. Any Puddle Jumper who
reads at least 10 books will be invited to the “Summer
Splashdown” Pizza Party.
Special Reading Club Event: Everyone in the Library &
Bookmobile service area is invited to have an oceanful of
laughs at Ray Owen’s “Make a Splash” Comedy Show on the

GAME COMMISSION UNVEILS
COMPREHENSIVE WEBSITE ON STATE
ENDANGERED/THREATENED SPECIES
Students, educators and planners now have
a definitive reference at their fingertips
Harrisburg- The Pennsylvania Game Commission has
published a new “Endangered and Threatened Species” section
to its website to help educators, students, contractors,
environmental planners and interested residents learn more
about these species of greatest conservation need.
“In an effort to heighten awareness of Pennsylvania’s
endangered and threatened species and to provide educators
and their students the references they need to meet and exceed
curriculum requirements, the Game Commission has improved
and updated its website’s Endangered and Threatened Species
Section,” said Carl G. Roe, agency executive director. “The new
and more extensive species accounts, as well as background
references, are the most striking ever produced by the agency.
We are confident they will help people become more excited
about wildlife and more cognizant of the factors that limit the
presence of species of special concern in the Commonwealth.
“Every account has been posted in a downloadable format
that educators can use for precision reproduction. Collectively,
the accounts are equivalent to a book, which is how the
Commonwealth used to package them. Now, educators and
researchers can sift through the Game Commission’s collection
and gather or reproduce what they need from the best source
for information on Pennsylvania’s wild birds and mammals.”
This authoritative collection of species of concern - written
by state’s experts on these species - includes all of
Pennsylvania’s endangered and threatened species, one
extirpated species and one extinct species. Each account
provides detailed species background, color photos, a range
map, recommendations for further reading and source
information. They are presented in an 8.5- by 11-inch Portable
Document Format (PDF).
This revision of Pennsylvania’s endangered and threatened
wild bird and mammal accounts has occurred because more
authoritative profiles were developed through the creation of
Pennsylvania’s Wildlife Action Plan, a blueprint for managing
low and declining populations of plants and animals that
states were required to develop to qualify for federal State
Wildlife Grant funding. These accounts were then customized
with quality images that were donated by nature
photographers who were solicited to help.
“The Game Commission is indebted to the photographers
and conservation agencies who answered our call for help,”
said Joe Neville, director of the agency’s Bureau of Information
and Education. “We are fortunate to have their images to
accentuate these important accounts. There’s no better way to
get acquainted with an animal than to look it over, or see it in
action. The photographers whose work supports these profiles
provided amazingly memorable stills that will surely endear
Pennsylvanians to these creatures.”
Students in grades 4, 7, 10 and 12 must meet academic
standards for environment and ecology as part of their
curricular requirements. Part of that study focuses on
threatened, endangered and extinct species, including what led
to the decline of these species, and steps that can be taken to
protect their habitat and strengthen their populations.
“The more noticeable and detailed our endangered species
education and outreach become, the greater the program’s
exposure will be to Pennsylvanians today and tomorrow,”
Neville said. “Delivering that message through attractive,
comprehensive accounts will surely excite teachers and
students about our species of greatest conservation need.”
Congress enacted the U.S. Endangered Species
Preservation Act of 1966, which gave broad authority and
policy guidance to the Secretary of the Interior to create a
comprehensive program for the protection, conservation and
propagation of endangered species of fish and wildlife. Three
years later, Congress passed the Endangered Species
Conservation Act of 1969 to provide increased protection to
threatened species and extended protection to a wider variety
of wildlife. The Endangered Species Act of 1973 reached all
animals, whereas the earlier act addressed only vertebrates,
molluscs and crustaceans. The law established authority for
protection before the danger of extinction becomes grave, a
management concept that lives on in state Wildlife Action
Plans throughout America.
“Pennsylvania has come a long way in endangered and
threatened species management over the past 25 years,
because of the Game Commission’s commitment to these
species of concern and through assistance from the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service and conservation partners such as the
Richard King Mellon Foundation and Penn State University,”
said Cal DuBrock, agency Bureau of Wildlife Management
director. “Recoveries such as those of the bald eagle, peregrine
falcon and osprey illustrate that helping these species can
right the decade upon decade of unfortunate consequence and
contamination these species endured.
“The Game Commission’s Wildlife Action Plan, with
assistance from the federal State Wildlife Grant Program, is
helping us maintain our focus on endangered and threatened
species, as well as other species in decline, to ensure common
species don’t become uncommon, or in desperate need of
emergency room treatment. But because there are 467 species
of wild birds and mammals to manage in Pennsylvania, and
the state’s landscape is altered daily, there will never be a
shortage of work to do.”
