LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Teachers Name: Brian Morrison
Grade Level: 9-10

Date of Lesson: Six Fall 2007

Topic: Quadratic Equations

Objectives
Student will understand that that quadratic equations can be solved.
Student will know quadratic equations and the quadratic formula.
Student will be able to consider solving quadratic equations in more than one way.
Maine Learning Results Alignment
Maine Learning Results-Mathematics-D-Algebra
Equations and Inequalities
Grades 9-Diploma
1 Students solve families of equations and inequalities
e. Apply the understanding that the solutions to equations in the form f(x)=g(x) are the x-values of the
points of intersection of the graphs f(x) and g(x) and common outputs in a table of values.
Rationale: It is important to know more than one way of doing things in case the first way doesnt work.
Assessment
Formative (Assessment for Learning)
Students will do in class problems and the teacher will walk around and make sure they are doing them
correctly.
Summative (Assessment of Learning)
Students will be given a quiz over the material at the end of class.
Integration
English: Students will discuss good websites for research.
Technology: Students will do internet research.
Groupings
Students will work in partners when they are doing research on the quadratic formula.
Differentiated Instruction
Strategies
Interpersonal: Students will work on the quiz by themselves.

Natural: Nature music will be playing in the backround

Music: Nature music will be playing in the backround
Linguistic: Students will need to discuss the need for doing things in more than one way.
Logical: Students will need to use logic to figure out the quadratic formula.
Kinesthetic: Students will be moving their desks away from each other for the quiz.
Modifications/Accommodations
I will review students IEP, 504 or ELLIDEP and make appropriate modification and
accommodation. Absent students will need to come see me after school or during study hall the next day
after class. Students will also need to get the notes and homework from another classmate.
Extensions
Students will think about why doing things more than one way is a good idea. Students will
research the quadratic formula on the internet.
Materials, Resources and Technology
Access to a laptop
Source for Lesson Plan and Research
I came up with this lesson plan by myself.
Maine Standards for Initial Teacher Certification and Rationale
Standard 3 - Demonstrates a knowledge of the diverse ways in which students learn and develop by
providing learning opportunities that support their intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and
cultural development.
Rationale: Interpersonal: Students will work on the quiz by themselves. Natural: Nature music
will be playing in the backround Music: Nature music will be playing in the backround Linguistic:
Students will need to discuss the need for doing things in more than one way. Logical: Students will need
to use logic to figure out the quadratic formula. Kinesthetic: Students will be moving their desks away
from each other for the quiz.

Standard 4 - Plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students,

curriculum goals, and learning and development theory.
Rationale: Student will understand that that quadratic equations can be solved. Student will know
quadratic equations and the quadratic formula. Student will consider solving quadratic equations in more
than one way.

Standard 5 - Understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies and appropriate

technology to meet students needs.
Rationale: Students will work by themselves when they are doing in class problems. Students will be
allowed to discuss websites that are good for finding the quadratic formula. Students will use laptops to
find the quadratic formula on the internet.

Standard 8 - Understands and uses a variety of formal and informal assessment

strategies to evaluate and support the development of the learner.
Rationale: Students will be assessed informally when they are doing in class problems and when they do
research to find the quadratic formula on the internet. Students will be assessed formally on the quiz at
the end of class.
Teaching and Learning Sequence:
Students desks will be arranged in groups of 4.
Agenda

Solve quadratic equations

The MLR in this lesson is students solve families of equations and inequalities.
At the end of this lesson students will understand that quadratic equations can be solved in more than one
way.
We are learning this because it is good to know how to do things in more than one way.
Hook: Database- When the students come in to the classroom, nature music will be playing. An image
that represents diversity will be on the board. Students will be asked to write down what they thing about
diversity and why it is good to do things in more than one way. 10 minutes

After the students discuss why it is good to do things in more than one way I will write a quadratic
equation on the board; y= x^2+2x+1. I will show them how to solve this equation by factoring, and then
setting the two parenthesis equal to zero. Next I will write y=x^2+7x+12 on the board and ask the
students to solve this by factoring. I will then write y=x^2-4x-24 on the board and ask them to solve this
problem. While the students are doing these problems I will be walking around and checking for
understanding. 20 minutes
Equip, Explore, Tailor: Logical, Intrapersonal.
After doing those three problems I will then put up the problem y=x^2+6x+13. I will have them
try to solve this equation using factoring and when they find that they cant I will then explain that there is
another way of solving quadratic equations and have them get their laptops out. Next I will have the
students get into winter partners and research the quadratic formula. I will give them about 10 minutes to
do this. If they find something quickly I will have them read about it in that website. When we come
back together I will show them the quadratic formula and show them that y=x^2+6x+13 can be solved
using the quadratic formula. Then I will put up the equation y=x^2+3x-17 and have the students solve
this equation using the quadratic formula. 35 minutes
Experience, Tailor: Interpersonal, Linguistic
In the last 15 minutes of class I will have the students take a quiz over how to solve quadratic
equations. Examples using factoring and the quadratic formula will be included in the quiz. Students will
be given the rest of class to finish the quiz. 15 minutes.
