A) CHEMISTRY
(THEORY)
Unit I : MATTER IN OUR SURROUNDINGS
Definition of matter, Physical nature of matter, Characteristics of particles of matter, States of
matter Solid, Liquid, Gas Shapes, Volume and Density.
Change of state of matter Melting, Boiling, Freezing and Condensation.
Sublimation and Evaporation and Factors effecting them including Latent Heat.
[ More to learn Non evaluative : Plasma and Bose-Einstein Condensate(BEC) ]
Relative activities to be incorporated in the respective units.
Unit II : IS MATTER ARROUND US IS PURE
Concept of purity, Mixture Type of mixtures (Homogeneous and Heterogeneous), Solutions
Definition, Type of solution (on the basis of solute solvent and its properties). Concentration of
solution- Saturated, Unsaturated and Supersaturated. Solubility and effect of temperature and
pressure on solubility. Colloids- Definition, Types of Colloids (dispersed phase and dispersion
medium), properties of Colloids. Suspension-Definition and Properties. Separating the
component of a mixture Activity based Filtration, Evaporation, Centrifugation, Decantation,
Sublimation, paper chromatography, Distillation (simple and fractional) and crystallization.
Activity Water purification.
Concept of physical and chemical change. Types of pure substance Types of elements- Metal,
Non-metal and Metalloids and their physical properties.
Compound Definition and properties (activity based). Differences between mixture and
compound.
PRACTICAL
1. Identification of glass wares (Beaker, Round bottom Flask, Test tube, Conical Flask,
Thermometer etc) and apparatus (Balance, Filter paper, Watch glass, Tongs, Spatula etc.)
2. To prepare
a) True solution of common salt, sugar and alum.

b) A suspension of soil, chalk powder, fine sand in water.


c) A colloidal solution of starch in water and egg-albumin/milk and distinguish between
these on the basis of i) Transparency, ii) Filtration criterion and iii) Stability.

Using iron fillings and Sulphur powder and distinguish between these on the basis of i)
Appearance ( Homogeneity and Heterogeneity), ii) Behaviour towards a magnet, iii) Behaviour

B) PHYSICS
(THEORY)
Unit I : MOTION
Distance and displacement, Velocity; Uniform and Non-uniform motion along a straight line ;
Acceleration, Distance -Time and Velocity-Time graphs for uniform motion and uniformly
accelerated motion, Equations of motions by graphical method ; elementary idea of uniform
circular motion.
Unit II : FORCE AND NEWTONS LAWS OF MOTION
Force and Motion, Newtons laws of motion, Inertia of a body, Inertia and mass, Momentum,
Force and Acceleration. Elementary idea of conservation of momentum, action and reaction
forces.
Unit III : FLOTATION
Thrust and pressure. Archimedes principles, Buoyancy, Elementary idea of relative density.
PRACTICAL
1. To establish relationship between weight of a rectangular wooden block lying on a
horizontal table and the minimum force required to just move it using a spring balance.
2. To determine the density of solid (denser than water) by using a spring balance and a
measuring cylinder.

model, Distribution of Electrons in various shells, Valency of elements, Atomic number, Mass

b) Zink with dilute Sulphuric Acid.

d) Sodium Sulphate with Barium Chloride solution in water.
