Principal's Column

feel wonderful to share reflection and highlights of

the challenges and existing experiences that each and
every one of us has undergone through out the past
academic year.
I am happy by the success and positive attitude displayed
by our students.
I believe that at the heart of all education is the formation
of character and we continue and try to shape our stu
dents into gentle woman, who will be able to serve their
families, community and nation as responsible and useful
citizens. Finally, I must thank all my students and their
parents for all their support for the development of the
college. Lastly, I must and again thank all of them who
have supported my transition into the TICs role in Malda
Womens College and I am incredibly positive and opti

Rituparno Ghoshs Chitrangada:

The Crowning Wish A Review
Dibyabibha Roy, Assistant professor, Dept. of English
In the strict ranks
of Gay and Straight
what is my status?
Stray? or Great?
(Vikram Seth, Dubious)
Researches and studies on Queer have
come a long way. Representations of the
queer have gained a significant and a prob
lematic area of discourse today. One of the
finest representations of alternate sexuali

28 M

ties on screen perhaps has been Late Ritu

parno Ghoshs brave tale Chitrangada : The
Crowning Wish (2012). As we remain in void
due to the absence of this phenomenal film
maker, I decide to write a small review of his
film as a tribute to his third death anniver
sary. A director who had changed the face of
Bengali cinema in the last two decades with
his sensitive portrayals of human relation
ships, dysfunctional families and vulnerabil

2015-16

[ k S ]

ities of human beings, Ghosh still continues

to haunt his audience. His penultimate film
Chitrangada : The Crowning Wish thus re
mains a quest for his status: the status of a
great or a stray artist and his search for
home.
Ghosh introduces the film through a choric
scene between his voice and the presence of
his counselor Shubho (Anjan Dutt). Rudra
(Ghosh) narrates a part of the main story to
him and Shubho asks, Eta Chitrangada ki
kore bujhbe? (How would the audience un
derstand that this is Chitrangada?) Rudra
replies Golpota agei bole debo bolchho?
(Do you want mr to tell them the story in the
beginning itself?) The premise of the wish
fulfilling story is built. Within the four walls
of a nursing home, the introductory scene is
a topnotch work of art. And as Rudra sits
with his back facing the camera, switching
on the 'channel' of his veins, the curtain
raises, preparing the audience to enter a
stage where Chitrangada, the 'text' from the
Mahabharata and Tagores dancedrama, is
used as a tool to subvert the notions of gen
der identity and body politics. Ghoshs film
emphasizes the ageold discourse on the
conflict between biological sex and social
gender. It is a movement, to put an alterna
tive reality into praxis, beyond the limits of
the theoretical bases. It becomes a pain in
pleasure experience for the audience.
Ghoshs debut as an actor in Kaushik Gan
gulys Arekti Premer Golpo (2011 Just An
other Love Story) created ripples in the film
fraternity for his bold portrayal of a homo
sexual man. His second act in Sanjoy Nags
Memories in March (2011) was a sensitive
portrayal of alternate sexuality. In Chitran
gada he appears as Rudra Chatterjee, an ob
sessive, rude, vivacious, energetic,
eccentric choreographer who wants to
stage the play by the same name. As he is in
troduced to the junkie percussionist Partha

29 M

(Jisshu Sengupta), both decide to suffer

each other as the story progresses. Partha is
Rudras Arjun and he is his Chitrangada, his
Rudra Chatterjee, his Rudie. The first half
gives a glimpse of the passion shared be
tween the two men in the film and as Rudra
narrates his past to Shubho, the intriguing
narrative merges the present with the past.
Rudra and Parthas liaison manifests as just
another love story encompassing brutal,
emotional, physical and psychological nu
ances at the same time.
Things begin to change as Mala (Aparajita
Auddy), a former performer in Rudras
dance troupe comes to visit him. Aparijta in
her brief role breathes ease into the charac
ter whose assumption of Partha is almost
breathtaking: O tomar kodor korte parbe?
(Do you think he will be able to give you your
dues?) Rudra smiles at her and says, Kodor
to anekei kore, bhalobashar sahosh kojoner
ache bol? (Not everyone returns favour with
love, you see); and as he sees Partha sharing
his joy with Malas kids, Rudra nourishes the
urge to make Partha a fond father, and de
cides to go for Gender Reassignment Sur
gery. The use of the word Bhalobasha
however, dilutes the essence of the scene;
the word Ador in Bengali could have been
a far better usage. Ghosh has been mistaken
for his autobiographical elements in his lat
est films. Be it Arekti Premer Golpo or Mem
ories in March, audience has tried to seek the
autobiographical traits of the directoractor
in his films. For a man who has transformed
the aesthetics of the entire Bengali cine
going public with his Unishe April (1994)
and has been met with charges of travesty
time and again, the choice of the word
kodor is not without relevance. Ghosh has
always deserved kodor from his audience;
audience to whom he has laid bare masked
and grotesque realities, deceptions and de
pravity. The artist in him, a winner of a

2015-16

[ g ]

plethora of National and International

Awards, unfortunately met with an untimely
death in 2013, demanding that "kodor"!
Coming back to the film, the second half is a
celebration of parenthood. Rudras parents
played by Dipankar De and Anasuya Majum
dar, are the showstealers. If Indian Cinema
has laughed at samesex jokes, it has also cel
ebrated alternate sexuality under the garb of
humour. If Kirron Kher as the mother could
accept his son as a homosexual in a commer
cial flick Dostana (2008), Rudras parents
play a pivotal role in wishfulfilment of their
son, Khokhon (Rudra). The finest words are
spoken by a mother to her son when she
says that she has the right to know every
thing about his body since he owes his exis
tence to her. Anasuya Majumdar and
Dipankar De fit in every frame exhibiting
their trauma, their anguish, and their fears;
yet finally accepting their son, as he is or
wants to be.
Ghosh uses the footmotif artistically as he
has done with his Noukadubi, and even in
his documentary on Tagore released posthu
mously as Jeevan Smriti. When Rudra and
Partha engage themselves in a conversation
regarding children and marriage, the con

30 M

stant background score of Sanai, symboliz

ing a heterosexual marriage reminds one
of Mahesh Dattanis play On A Muggy Night
in Mumbai. The play mocks societal institu
tion of marriage in the same way as does the
particular scene in the film. The text of
Tagores Chitrangada appears in the back
ground to focus on the theme of gender iden
tity. The transformation of Kurupa to Surupa
is problematized and Ghosh brings in his vi
sion of a wish fulfilment, weaving a saga of
two ostracized (used in the film) and mar
ginalized characters of the society, Rudra
and Partha, the latter being a victim of drug
abuse, and hence significantly ostracized.
Besides being rich in its thematic concern,
Ghoshs Chitrangada also attains technical
brilliance through the sheer use brightness,
the shades of grey and black, the visuals of
the locales, and the room of the nursing
home turned into a stage. Abhik Mukhopad
hyays
cinematography
compliments
Ghoshs twilight vision. Music has always
been Ghoshs forte. Debajyoti Mishras im
provisations in Tagore songs are intelligently
and aesthetically deployed. Selection of
Tagore songs that are not bound by gender
specificity especially Bodhu Kon Alo Laglo
Chokhe, the instrumental refrain of Momo

Chitte and Nutan Pran Dao speak of Ghoshs

genius.
The basic question that remains unan
swered however is why did the man choose
to play Rudra himself? Undoubtedly he gives
a breathtaking performance, even the ges
tures when he presses the keys on his cell
phone seem to follow a choreographed
movement that naturally comes to a dancer,
the character that he plays in the film. (It
should be noted here that the directoractor
of his stature, at his age, had taken the pains
to train himself in the dance form, aided by
Sharmila Biswas) However, the choice of
Rudra, from heteronormative crowd of ac
tors could have delivered his intentions well.
Ghosh, the director overshadows Rudra the
choreographer. Or maybe, he really wanted
to play Madan this time! The directors ap
proaches are selfexplanatory and that has
always made him stand apart from the
crowd.
The film can initially shock an audience who
might not be comfortable with the theme.
But hardly does a director have the courage
to portray things he really wishes to show.
The changing gaze of the society on tabooed
sexual subjects has, however, not been re
stricted yo arthouse cinema anymore. On
the one hand if films like Onirs My Brother
Nikhil (2005), and Sudipto Chattopadhyays
Paankh (2010) have dealt with the issues on
gender roles, commercial Hindi films like
Bombay Talkies (2013) and recently Shakun
Batras Kapoor and Sons (2016) have gone
down well with the masses. Amidst all,

Ghoshs Chitranagada: The Crowning Wish

succeeds in making a wish come true, the
wish of seeing the portrait of an artist fum
bling to make his own choice. Rudras
dilemma is universal; the two roads in life
are but choices. He can keep his engineering
degrees locked up in his cupboard only to
pursue his passion for dancing, which "for
tunately" is not bound by gender. His choices
in life come from the sense of liberation that
his Art form provides and he decides to live
as he is, a "vivacious, energetic, eccentric"
male dancer, instead of a "halfthing". Yes,
Rudra wallows in selfpity which might seen
dramatic at times, but his loneliness, his pain
of rejection and his struggle for survival are
brought on the same plane. In the end, Chi
trangada remains a story in transition, it
moves from a state of being to a new becom
ing; a story of celebrating ones own shobhab
and its ichchhe its desire!

Life is full of dream

Sahenash Parvin Khatun
ExStudent, Malda Womens College
Every where, Every time
Every moment, Every Situation
We Dream ;
We are Seeing the dream.
And I know
What is dream
What is actual meaning of dream.
Dream is really beautiful
It is always happy
Because it gives joy of life
It makes power and builds the life,
So I like to Dream!
When it comes in our life
I feel everything new,
Because it brings new smile,
new colour, new sound and new joy
and every thing is anew !
Every person has a dream
because dream is our future
and dream is really so beautiful
Sometimes dream like hazy eastern sky
makes boys and girls cry.
But We cannot understand,
Why, we fail in our life.
But we are not stopped
So we have been dreaming for many days,
and we shall be dreaming.
Dream has no end
It is constant with in huge chain.
Though, no person can live without dream,
you should hard work every day
and must execute your dreams.
so dream is life
and life is also full of dream
so dream is really
A beautiful thing.

Pangs of Love
Hamida Banu
B.A (2nd Year) English Honours

Oh spirit of love, I hate you!

Thou worshipped by lovers though.
You made me blind and mad
Still I walk forward with losses I had.
Oh spirit of love, you are the worst,
You tempt me to fulfil the thirst.
I knew thats every promise was false,
Just fulfilled the need and nothing else.
Oh spirit of love, I knew that each oath,
Which was seeming love from depth?
I knew that will go forever then,
But you, you force me to believe again.
Oh spirit of love, you finished me,
And I dont know whats going to be.
Oh stream of love, away from whereas you came
I hate you forever for all that youve done.

The Lonely Earning Woman

Hamida Banu
B.A., 2nd Year(English Honours)

It is after sunset
There is a soft red in the west.
In this rainy season
There is a lonely woman.
She is passing by the stream
At this evening time.
The nature is so quiet
With its evening light
She is passing in a boat
With her no ending thought.
Bringing a huge grass bundle
For her dear cattle.
One side of the boat bending down
For the heavy load that is on.
On the overflowing stream
She is looking as a dream.
At the crave thin and weak
The lady rowing so quick.
She is looking so thoughtful
That have to go as soon possible,
Paleness covered her face
For the growing darkness.
May be her thought is so deep
For those works before sleep.

Dream
Tamashree Mishra
B.A.,1st Year, English Honours

What is Dream?
Some full of ideas or thoughts just?
Some imagination just?
Some wishes?
Some conceived in the mind?
No, Dream is not merely mental images
Dream is genuine
Dream is a cherished desire
Manufactured by a picture in our own ways.
Everybodys dream cannot be same
The outburst of emotion or sentiment!
A dream can bring back to life a man
A dream inspires a man to live.
A dream encourages a man to enjoy life
A dream makes & life beautiful.

Autumn Time
Kabita Das
B.A.,(2nd year) Elective English

Autumn is approaching,
And Nature spreads her wing
Beautiful clouds in the sky,
Can the Earth, This beauty deny?
Autumn numbs our senses,
It brings in a sense of holiday,
Mirth and laughter do we share,
Joys and sorrow blended today.

My Best College
Nurafsana Khatun
Ex student, Malda Womens College
Everybody has a desire to be admitted in one of the best colleges. But it is a different
matter whether her desire comes true in her life. I had also a desire of my own re
garding my admission. And I think today I am winner, because I was admitted in
Womens college which is one of the best colleges.
I want to share something about my college. Some rules are to be followed
strictly by all the students. For example student will have to secure a minimum of
75% attendance in classes; failing which a defaulder can be suspended from the col
lege. Classes are held regularly and this is what makes my college different from the
others. Moreover it is the only Womens College in and around Malda district and
also it serves the need of women folk in this vast region. So, every moment I feel
proud of my college, which according to me is My Best College.

responsibility.
