Your complete guide to solar power

1. Do you want to generate your own free power?

2. Do you want to acquire a system that would payback its
cost before you will know, but keep serving even your
children?
3. Would you like a system that would increase your
propertys value?
4. Would you like a system that would give you immense
tax benefits?
5. And the most important part, do you want to help save
our Earth?

If you replied with a Yes, Congratulations .

You are on the Right track. And Solar Power is the
Answer for you.

A solar power system, also known as photovoltaic system, is

a power system designed to supply usable solar power by
means of photovoltaics. It consists of an arrangement of
several components, including solar panels to absorb and
convert sunlight into electricity, a solar inverter to change
the electric current from DC to AC, as well as mounting,
cabling and other electrical accessories to set up a working
system.

How does sunshine

become electricity?
1. Photovoltaic (PV) cells convert sunlight to direct
current (DC) electricity.
2. The inverter converts DC into alternating current
(AC) electricity.
3. The electrical panel sends power to your lights and
appliances.
4. The utility meter measures the energy you draw
and feed back to the grid.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

SOLAR !!!
Review Your Utility Bills. Youll have a better
point for comparison if you find out how many
kilowatt hours (kWh)
,you use per day per month, per year. Your
utility bill should include that information.

Estimate Your Solar Power Needs. If you are

constructing a new home, then youd need to
estimate your demand based on the type of
equipment you plan to install and your homes
square footage. The pros call this your load.

1 Kilowatt requires 9 square meters space. In bright sunlight,

9 square meters of
space will yield 1
Kilowatt of power.
Thats a helpful rule of
thumb for calculating a
rough estimate of how much area you might need. For example, a 10
kilo watt system may need 90-95 square meters of area, depending
on the type of PV module used.

Dont Shade Your Array. Yes, solar works in our climate, but it
doesnt work well anywhere if its in the shade. Shading photovoltaic
system dramatically decreases its output. Just shading the bottom
row of wafers alone amounts to an 80% reduction in efficiency.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS ABOUT

SOLAR

How do solar electric systems work?

Photovoltaic panels are often mounted on a roof and wired into a

building via an inverter. The inverter converts the direct current (DC)
energy generated through the solar panels into alternating current
(AC), the standard type of current used to power buildings in INDIA.
Orienting solar panels to the south maximizes the effectiveness of

energy collection, and most roofs from flat to 60-degrees can

accommodate photovoltaic cells.

How many solar panels do I need?

The size of the photovoltaic system is
correlated to energy-use needs,
available space for a system, and overall
costs for the system components and
installation. OJAS Saurya can help
determine the best size for your solar
photovoltaic system. In Haryana, a one
kilowatt system should produce about
2500 kilowatt hours per year.

How much does it cost?

Next to nothing. An OJAS made
solar power system will have a life
of almost 50 years and a payback
period of only six years. A 20kW
solar electric system may cost
approximately 18 lacs as of April
2016. That total includes the cost
for all components solar panels,
panel mounts, and inverter and labour associated with installation.
It does not however, reflect all the avoided costs, such as the tax
breaks and the credits received through net metering.

How much will I really save on my utility bills?

Of course this is a relative
question. It depends, on the size
of system installed. In Haryana,
according to the policy of net
metering, upto 90 percent of the
expenditure on electricity can be
saved. That said expect to
generate excess electricity in the
summer (when days are long)
which can potentially offset the
energy you use from the grid in the winter.

How do net metering systems work?

Net meters look very much like other outdoor meters with one
notable exception they spin both forwards and backwards
recording both the power produced and power used.

Do I need battery backup?

Because adding backup battery banks can add as much as 25% in
cost to a residential solar power system, most solar photovoltaic
experts do not recommend adding a backup battery system unless
there is concern about a long utility outage or the residence is in a
remote location. Whats the difference between solar electric and
solar thermal?

How much maintenance do solar systems require?

Solar photovoltaic panels require almost no maintenance. During
the first four maintenances, OJAS will confirm the functioning of all
components and tighten each and every connection. Otherwise, no
maintenance is required. It is, however, important to place panels
where they will remain clear of shade and debris.

What warranties will my system carry?

The solar panel carry a performance warranty of 25 years. The Grid
tied inverter will carry a warranty of 5 years.

But the biggest question is, When do I

recover my investment?
Lets see the calculation for a 10 KW system
manufactured by OJAS saurya.

Calculation of payback period for

10 KW system

:
:

Number of units generated in 1 hour

Number of units generated in a day
(assuming 7 hours of sunlight in a day)

10
70

Considering 330 days in a year with favourable sunlight;

Number of units generated in a year

Cost of 1 unit as per UHVBN rates

Considering expected increase in
tariff over next 5 years ( tariff increased from
4.6 to 6.0per unit over last 4 years.)

7.2 Rs./ unit

Therefore, Price of 23,100 units consumed

in a year will be

7.2 x 23,100 = 1,66,320 Rs.

Estimated cost of a 10 KW system is

Hence, estimated recovery period

: 8,80,000

So, the payback period becomes

70 x 330

= 23,100 units

8,80,000 Rs.

/ 1,66,320 =

5.29 years!!!

After that, its free Electricity !!!!

5.29 years
