In this chapter, the researcher would like to introduce the
fundamental idea of Environmental Politics in order to comprehend
the profundity behind the term and to illuminate the risk that

would consequently arise as the unabated Illegal Mining practices

be ignored accordingly.
The Environmental Politics of Barangay Bonbon
The

inter-relation

of

environment

and

politics

is

quite

evident as they are one in nature, however the two terms does not
mean the same as they are independent from its broad concepts. It
is

in

the

light

of

the

researchers

aid

that

environmental

politics had focused on the three core components as an academic

field. Namely; (i) the related theories and ideas related to
environment, (ii) examination of environmental stances of both
mainstream political and socio-environmental movements, and (iii)
the analysis of public policymaking and implementation affecting
environment at multiple geo-political levels. Thus, the three
core components would set as a criteria for the examination of
environmental politics of Barangay Bonbon.
The Local Government Code of 1991 substantially provides for
the preservation and protection of ecological and environmental
concerns, hence if we look at the first criteria of environmental
politics, it is contextually fitting to admit that there are
theories implicated and implied related to environment. The Code
as well so provides the regulation of facilities that could
affect environmental concerns.

Furthermore,

the

City

Environment

and

Natural

Resources

Office (CENRO) of the Locality as one of the functioning office

designated to regulate environment related activities by issuing
permits. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources as
well as a bureaucratic agency of the National Government is
designated for the supervision of the LGUs CENRO, provides so
far the protection of Mt. Mayapay situated at Tuway Barangay
Bonbon in order to protect and provide the Taguibo Watershed, the
only source of water in Butuan.
The

main

objective

of

the

paper

is

to

analyze

the

environmental politics of Barangay Bonbon particularly on mining

industry.
