expect students to gain? Are there connections to other curriculum areas and subject area benchmarks? )

Content Standards

Oklahoma ELA Academic Standards 5th Grade

5.6.R.1 Students will use their own viable research questions to find information about a
specific topic.
5.6.R.2 Students will record and organize information from various print and/or digital
sources.
5.6.W.4 Students will summarize and present information in a report.

NETS*S Standards:

Standard 5. Digital Citizenship

Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice
legal and ethical behavior.
a. Advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and
technology.
b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration,
learning, and productivity.

Overview (a short summary of the lesson or unit including assignment or expected or possible products)
The students will research cyber bullying. Upon completion of the lesson, students will understand what cyber
bullying is, how it affects individuals, and what to do if he/she is being cyber bullied or know someone who is. The
students will complete a KWL (know, want to know, learned) chart as they research cyber bullying. They will then
summarize what they learned in a three-paragraph paper, typed on Microsoft Word.

Essential Questions (What essential question or learning are you addressing? What would students care or
want to know about the topic? What are some questions to get students thinking about the topic or generate
interest about the topic? What questions can you ask students to help them focus on important aspects of the
topic? What background or prior knowledge will you expect students to bring to this topic and build on?)
What do you know about cyber bullying?
What is cyber bullying?
How does it affect individuals?
What do you do when you or someone you know are being cyber bullied?
Why is it important to put a stop to cyber bullying?

Assessment (What will students do or produce to illustrate their learning? What can students do to generate new
knowledge? How will you assess how students are progressing (formative assessment)? How will you assess
what they produce or do? How will you differentiate products?)
1. Students will complete the K (know) section of their KWL chart as we have a group discussion in class.
2. Students will complete the W (want to know) section of their KWL chart on their own in class.
3. Students will research cyber bullying using the questions from the W (want to know) section of their KWL
chart, and write what they learn in the L (learned) section of their KWL chart. The students will use kid
safe search engines to research cyber bullying.
4. Students will summarize what they learned by typing a three-paragraph paper.
5. Students will turn in the summary along with their KWL chart to be graded using a teacher created rubric.
Resources (How does technology support student learning? What digital tools, and resourcesonline student
tools, research sites, student handouts, tools, tutorials, templates, assessment rubrics, etchelp elucidate or
explain the content or allow students to interact with the content? What previous technology skills should students
have to complete this project?)
1.
2.
3.
4.

Students will be provided with a blank KWL chart.

Students will use the kid safe search engines www.kidrex.org and www.kidzsearch.com to research.
Students will use Microsoft Word to type their three-paragraph summary paper.
Students should have an idea of how to research topics and type on Microsoft Word.

Instructional Plan
Preparation (What student needs, interests, and prior learning provide a foundation for this lesson? How can you
find out if students have this foundation? What difficulties might students have?)
The students will have prior knowledge of research topics and using Microsoft word from their computer class
they have for activity every year through sixth grade. The students will be involved in a group discussion,
facilitated by me, about cyber bullying. Most students will have prior knowledge of cyber bullying, either being
cyber bullied themselves or knowing someone who has been cyber bullied. The students will be provided a blank
KWL chart, which they will be familiar with, and a rubric, which will allow each student to understand what is
expected.
Some students may have problems using the correct words or wording to search with. Some students may also
have trouble navigating the Internet and summarizing the content found. Some students may also have trouble
with using Microsoft Word.

Management (How and where will your students work? Classroom, lab, groups, etc?
The students will spend one 45 minute class period completing in the K (know) and W (want to know) sections of
the KWL chart in the classroom with the teacher leading a discussion. The students will then spend three 45
minute class periods researching, completing the L (learned) section of the KWL chart, and typing their three
paragraph summary paper in the computer lab. The students will spend one final 45 minute class period
presenting what they have learned about cyber bullying in the classroom. This will be another class discussion,
mainly led by the students with me keeping the students on topic. The students will be allowed to brainstorm with
their neighbors during the first class discussion. The students will work individually in the computer lab on the
research and paper. The last class discussion will be a closing activity for the lesson.
Instruction and Activities (What instructional strategies will you use with this lesson? How will your learning
environment support these activities? What is your role? What are the students' roles in the lesson? How can the
technology support your teaching? What engaged and worthwhile learning activities and tasks will your students
complete? How will they build knowledge and skills? Will students be expected to collaborate with each other and
others? How will you facilitate the collaboration?)
I will provide each student with a KWL chart and the rubric. I will facilitate a group discussion about cyber
bullying. The students will work together with their neighbor to complete the K (know) section and the W (want to
know) section of their KWL charts. The students will work individually during computer lab time to research,
complete the L (learned) section of their KWL chart, and type their three-paragraph summary paper. My role
during computer lab time is to make sure each student is successful in researching and that each student is
focused on the task at hand. The students will submit their three-paragraph summary paper and KWL chart to be
assessed using a rubric provided to each student at the beginning of the lesson. The students will come back
together as a class to discuss what they have learned to close the cyber bullying lesson. The students learning
outcome will be knowledge of cyber bullying and what they can do to stop it happening to them or others they
know.

Differentiation (How will you differentiate content and process to accommodate various learning styles and
abilities? How will you help students learn independently and with others? How will you provide extensions and
opportunities for enrichment? What assistive technologies will you need to provide?)
I will put all ideas about cyber bullying on the white board, as well as discuss the ideas with the class. Students
who need extra time will be given extra time to complete the assignment. During the computer lab time, I will be
meeting with individuals to make sure the assignment is understood. I will also include small group meetings if a
few students are having the same difficulties. I will be there to answer any and all questions the students may
have. Any accommodations needed for IEP students will be available, such as shortened assignments,
headphones, a touch screen computer in the lab, etc.

Closure and Reflection (Will there be a closing event? Will students be asked to reflect upon their work?
Will students be asked to provide feedback on the assignment itself? What will be your process for
answering the following questions?
Did students find the lesson meaningful and worth completing?
In what ways was this lesson effective?
What went well and why?
What did not go well and why?
How would you teach this lesson differently?)
The closing event will be the class coming back together after the assignment is completed to have a group
discussion on what was learned about cyber bullying. Students will be allowed to provide feedback to each other
and me during this discussion. This class discussion will help me understand how the students felt about the
assignment, if the lesson was effective, what went well, and what did not go well. After the lesson and final class
discussion is complete, I can reflect on what I will keep the same and what I will do different in the future when
teaching this lesson.
