Solid mechanics is a branch of continuum mechanics that

deals with the behaviour of solid bodies, especially the
deformations and stresses in the solid bodies under the
action of external forces.

In the second year MA2001 Mechanics of Materials (MoM)

course, you have already learnt
a few methods for
analysing deformations and stresses in solid bodies such as
b
bars,
b
beams
and
d shafts.
h f
In the present course, viz., Solid Mechanics, you will learn
more advanced methods (than in MA2001) called Energy
Methods for analysing deformations and stresses in solid
bodies, and also you will also get introduced to two new
topics in solid mechanics, viz., Fracture Mechanics and

solid materials/structures.
So, my lectures on Solid Mechanics (Part 1) will deal with
the following three major topics:
A) Energy Methods (more advanced methods than in MA2001)
B) Fracture Mechanics (new topic)
C) Fatigue Analysis (new topic)
3

Hence, the subject of solid mechanics is of fundamental

importance in engineering.
