Tightrope - Opening shot

In the opening shot we see flashlights with an

image in front to project the image onto the
black curtain seen. The circles arrive on the
curtains 1 second after each other each time.
This could show the slow rise to fame this
band is happening. The circles also enlarge
every time which could imply that the band is
getting bigger and more famous with each new
circle/song. This Music video is a very surreal
video because it is not something to happen in
modern society and could be seen as some
sort of a dream like situation. This very much
relates to the band as they are all very
idiosyncratic in their own way, so this video
highlights that with the unique use of costume
and Mise-en-scene.

In this establishing shot we see the whole band at

the start of the video. It has a soft focus on the band
members in the background, highlighting the main
man in the middle of the shot who, as he is the lead
singer, is the focus of the band. The fact that they
are all relaxed portrays how calm they all are in real
life and that they are very chilled friends and this
video shows this. This mid shot spotlights the main
singer and makes the rest of the band seem smaller
in the image, due to their positioning on set,
showing that the guy in the middle is definitely the
main singer without words being spoken. The
colours in the scene are bright and seem happy
which correlates well with this upbeat song.
However the skull and the unevenly spaced out
picture frames could imply that not all is normal and
that something out of the ordinary could happen.

When there was a significant change in sound and

tempo of the music, the lead singer is thrown out of
shot to emphasize the instrumental work the rest of
the band are doing, giving them their own limelight. In
this part we are given a long shot so we are able to
fully view the carnage on set. The costumes are wild,
wacky and unique and relates to the bands identity
as this band strive to be out of the ordinary. The
movements done by the actors are also very fast and
energetic matching the music being played. The
speed of the cutting between shots is quick and also
matches the music. A short shot reverse shot is used
between 2 of the females and the set to highlight the
bizarreness of the video.

The hands in this part of the video are seen

constantly moving given the sense that the main
singer is trapped where he is as they are also in an
aggressive position, fully stretched out trapping him
in. However the brightness of the lighting in the set
could show that there is some hope of him
escaping. This is a continuous shot keeping the flow
of the song smooth and rapid. The singer is now
seen with a tattoo/makeup on the side of his face
showing the wild side of the band and relates to the
rest of the actors in the video. Even though the
lighting is bright, the colours are not and are dull
and ths mid shot shows that.

As the camera stays on the singers face the set

suddenly turns dark implying that there is no
escape and that he is stuck in this dangerous
place in which he finds himself. The darkness
could imply the seriousness of the song as the
lighting suddenly changes and leads up to the
main chorus, being the serious part. The camera
angle is still at a mid shot range showing off all
the facial expressions that he provides and shows
the skill of lip syncing the words perfectly in time
with the music.

To open up this new part of the video we see a Dolly

shot where the camera follows the action of set
being put up, firework and pyros being set off and
men walking on and off set. This highlights the
chaos on set and shows that there is a lot going on
in this video. The fact that the set is being put
together when the camera starts zooming shows a
rustic edge but slightly unprofessional and that the
band are potentially too chill and not ruthless
enough with their work. This smoothly cut from the
last scene to this and was a continuous way to get
to this part of the video.

This is the first time we see the band all together as

one singing, the colours are a monotone blue
implying that it is calm currently but the use of sock
puppets show that there is still a sense of weirdness
that could creep in later on. The band are seen as
equals due to the camera angle as it is a mid shot
from an eyeline height, showing them all as the same
height and none being bigger than another. To get to
this scene we needed a cutaway from the smoke to
this which was sped up slightly to keep the energy
going throughout this video.

This shot is the same as the previous one but now

the lights have dimmed in the background giving a
dark atmosphere. Only to be contradicted by the
hell like hands we see rise from the bottom of the
screen. It's almost like the band are trying to do
something different, but modern society is stopping
them, dragging them down and burning their
chances because of it. The camera angle is kept the
same to again show them as equals and there was
no cut between this and the previous screenshot as
it was all filmed continuously.

Once the singer starts his solo part again the

video focuses on that by singling him out from the
group again and the use of the flashlight confirms
that he is the main man. The fact that the camera
is stil could imply that all the weird energy, that
has been kept throughout the video, is really
happening for him and that it is not a dream. The
camera then starts to pan out as he tries to
escape. The colours are predominantly shady but
with little flashes of brightness.

This is the end scene where everything seems like

normal again. We know this because the lights have
gone from dimmed to bright like a sun rising. Which
could imply that the dream like situation we had just
witnessed was coming to an end, as was the song,
and everything is going back to the normality of life.
We can also tell that things have gone back to
normal because before, in the dream like situations,
people were dressed and acting like animals. Now
we we see a real dog run across showing that the
abnormality of the video is finishing.

Audience
I feel like the audience would be between the 13-29 year old range and that it
would be most appealing to them because it is a very unique and modern video
with controversial costume and ideas. Also because of the pace of the shots and
editing it could be harder for anyone older to keep up and younger people prefer
quicker, high octane viewing more than the 30+ year olds. I feel like the audience
will get the fact that this band aren't massively famous but are very unique from
the video as it was seemed like it was made on a low budget, due to all being
filmed in one indoor location with handmade props and costume, but with very
creative ideas.

Aspect that I might use

I like the speed of editing and cutting from one part to another part and I also like
the uniqueness of the video because it will stand out comparing to any other kind
of video. The lip syncing will have to be as enthusiastic as it is in this video for me
to use it throughout my own video. The main part I enjoyed the most was the
wackiness and would be something that I will want to use in my own which will be
mainly portrayed by the costume and the actions the actor will be doing with the
idea I eventually give them.
