SRISAILAM HYDRO POWER PLANT

On 25th April 2014 we have visited Srisailam Hydropower Plant (APGENCO).It is constructed over the river
Krishna. This dam forms the upper reservoir with the gross storage of 308 TMC feet. This plant was completed on
15/10/998.
This Srisailam project consists of two banks. They are right bank and left bank power station.
Left Bank:
It is an underground power station with installation of 6 Nos of each 150 mega watts reversible type pump
turbine motor generating units. This power station facilitates mopping up of surplus off peak thermal power in the
system to supply it during peak system
Right Bank:
This bank has installation of 7 Nos each of 110 mega watts Hydel units. This power station is presently in
operation and contributes about 2300 million units of energy every year. A masonry concrete dam at sunnipenti (6Km
downstream from srisailam temple) to height of 145 meters and length 512mtswas constructed. It consists of 12 gates
of 65ft*55ft.the project is estimated about Rs567.27 crores.
At stage I: There is 220V DC battery system of capacity 440AH.Model: PLANTE-YKP-33, there are 110 no. cells
and date of commissioning is 10/05/2010.
At stage II: There are 220V DC battery system same as stage-I. but date of commissioning is 28/11/2009.

Control Room:
There is generator of 11 KV which are connected to bus bars and there are 220V stuck off transformer connected
In this synchronizing takes place i.e., voltage, frequency, phases are same. This can be tested by 2 lamp method. If
an ON machine is tripped it takes half an hour time to start synchroscope method.
In this control panel:

BCW & TRF C.W are there.

VALVE
STATOR cooling water valve
Annunciation panel inductor panel.
Manufactured by ABB ASEA BROWN BOVER
Shows water level c-shaft
Reservoir level-833.20
Its capacity is 52.8918 TMC (Thousand Million Cubics)

Maximum demand per day 818 mw on 13/09/2009

In remote control panel Transformer of 42.5 MVA is used.
In OLTC controller on load tape changing butterfly wall turbine is used.
Oil pressuring tanks: oil moves the piston, due to the pressure that oil tank modes due to motors of 75 hp. If the
pressure of the tank decreases then the piston will stop working machine will come to rest. In this Francis turbine is
used.
Output-112200
32-magnetic poles
Speed-187.5 rpm
26-vanes and the guide vanes are used to increase and decrease the load.
If voltage decreases then 415v is supplied through panel.
Silent pole generator - hydro power plant
Non-silent pole generator thermal power plant
26 guide vanes and 32 magnetic poles are there.
11kv bus jet used for MRP regulation
Governor This governs the speed of the turbine.
In this
1-phase transformers are used.
21- Transformers are there.
There is a Hydraulic System used to start command to the generator.
Here in the station it has Breaking and Jacking, It is operated by its own system but if not it should be done
manually.

Some important terms are:

PLC: Programmable Logic Control
MRT: Meter Relay Test
AVR: Auxiliary Voltage Regulator
VAR: Unit Auxiliary Report.
Maximum generation on 24/4/2014.
Achieved -89.160
Reservoir Level: 833.20
Flat: 6.00
Capacity: 52.8918 TMC
Maximum generation per year- 3797.927MW (in 1993-94)
Maximum generation per month-564.957MW (in oct 2000)
Maximum generation per day -19.127MW (on 9/9/2009)
Maximum demand per day-818MW (on 13/9/2009).

Nagarjuna sagar hydro power plant

On 26th April we have visited Nagarjuna sagar hydro power plant. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, which is
about 100 KM downstream of the river from Srisailam forms the lower reservoir with a gross storage of 400
TMC ft. It is of 815.6 mw. It has 26 gates and 2 canals are there
Left canal: 2*30:-generate 60 MV
Right canal: 3*30:-generate 90 MV
There are 8 units:
In 1st unit (110MV) BHEL- generator
In 2nd 8th (8MV)-generator and motor
Penstock inlet gate is there which gets closed when there is any problem in turbine.
In this 3-phase AC power is developed.
There are 3 bus bars:
220 kV starting bus
220 kV bus-B
220 kV bus-A

52 is used to interrupt the gas in the breakers. If the machine is not working then we will take the power from the
grid.
We can change the reactive power supply by under excitation and higher excitation.
Daily APGENCO Hyderabad manages the loads. Have to maintain constant frequency 50 Hz.
If the load frequency changed suddenly then it will be tripped. Grid restoration starts from Nagarjuna sagar and
Srisailam.
Transformer tank contains 3000 liters of insulating oil.
In unit 2-8 8000 liters oil is used.
In unit 1 12000liters oil is used.
Insulators are kept for support used for insulation. Insulators are placed at every transformer.
Hence, we have observed and learnt the basics of the generation of power in hydro power station.
