Lesson objectives:
Activity 1: Warm up
Aims: - to break the ice and to revise the information acquired in the
previous lesson (phrasal verbs)
- to check the homework and to introduce the new topic
Procedure:
the T prepared some questions written on notes, which she
distributes among children, randomly, and the Ss pick a partner and
ask them the question, which they have to answer
the T checks their homework and corrects potential mistakes
Interaction: T-Ss, S-S, Ss-T
Skills: speaking
Time: 5 minutes
Activity 2: Grammar focus
Aims: - to introduce the the modal verbs should/ ought to as a
means of expressing recommendations, suggestions or of
giving advice
- to encourage ss to use them in everyday speech
Procedure:
the T plays for the ss a power point presentation outlining the main
characteristics of modals should and ought to and the
meanings/values they invest the main verb with in a sentence
the T then offers her ss some examples on the blackboard and invites
them to write them down in their notebooks
the T gives students some practice on a worksheet; in ex I they have
to complete some sentences with the present and past forms of the
modal verbs including the verb in brackets
in ex. II they are supposed to rephrase some sentences using
should + the appropriate expression
ss share their answers with the class and the T corrects potential
mistakes
the T plays a series of slides on the computer and she asks her ss to
offer suggestions/ advice according to each situation in the picture;
the students take turns expressing their opinions

Time: 20 minutes
Activity 3: Listening comprehension
Aims: - to check the understanding of information delivered by native
speakers on a tape
- to practise and improve listening skills and pronunciation
Procedure:
the T plays a tape containing 3 dialogues, each one revealing a
different situation and they have to listen to all of them and then
decide what each protagonist did wrong. (ex. 9/ 79)
the T checks their answers frontally
Interaction: T-Ss, S-S, S-T
Skills: listening, writing, reading
Time: 10 minutes
Activity 4: Reading comprehension
Aims: - to check the comprehension of a written text
- to encourage the ss to share their point of view
Procedure:
the T invites the ss to read the new episode from The Flood, taking
turns
the T elicits the translation of the unknown words, writing them on
the blb
