Dear Linda Y. H. Cheng,

My name is Gursavak Gill and I am currently an undergraduate at the University

of California, Davis. My major is Electrical Engineering and I am well prepared in all of
my coursework that I have done so far. Moreover, I consider myself qualified for working
with software, hardware, and EDA tools when applying for an electrical engineering
position. The reason I feel capable of pursuing this position is due to the coursework I
have completed at UC Davis. Ultimately right now Im pursuing a field in software
design towards my profession. In other words, I have devoted countless hours of studying
and preparing myself in order to succeed in my classes, so when I apply for a position I
am well aware of what is going on. In addition, I am very responsible with my work, and
always meet deadlines for assignments. I still have one more year to go to earn my B.S.
degree in engineering and expect to graduate in June 2017. Clearly, electrical engineering
is the job I have my mindset on and I hope to succeed in this career in the future.

A significant factor that I have acquired from my courses are software tools that I
which can translate to my field of work. For instance, from the software standpoint these
skills will help me on my job, because I am already familiar with these assignments. The
coursework that I have completed at UC Davis is going to beneficial in the long run
because we are getting prepared for what to expect if I was working at my actual job. I
have done coding in Verilog, Java, C, C++, SPICE, and Matlab etc. Even if I do not
know how to code in a certain language, I will still be able to figure out coding other
languages on the grounds that they are very similar. From those skills it was very helpful
to know how to write simulated codes in software design. Recently, I have completed a
Verilog project and the primary goal was to implement Cramers Rule. Cramers Rule is
basically many different ways to solve and make equations, with a unique solution. This
task was troublesome to complete in Verilog. Other work included designing finite state
machines, FPGAs, and working on improving your initial design. Programing in C
language, also expanded my horizon in coding because in this day in age it is very
valuable to know. Matlab, has been a tool that is very simple to use and very effective in
many of my classes. I have had four classes that require the use of Matlab so I am very
comfortable in using it. Furthermore, coding in software is an essential task to
accomplish and by being familiar with these tools I will be able to be successful at my
job.
In addition, hardware tools have helped my understanding of any physical work
that is to be done in my profession. For example, in the hardware perspective, skill sets
are more hands on and require less work to be done from the computer. Critical thinking
is the best use for hands on interactions here. I have done work including the use of bread

boards where we test the signal of a circuit. Those steps include using a function
generator, multimeter, oscilloscope and FPGA. This type of work is done in our Circuits
class here at UC Davis. Building a circuit on a breadboard is very simple and unique. My
professor taught me that building a circuit is like putting Legos together for a toy. The use
of bread boards is very important because you will test the voltage of the circuit using a
function generator, multimeter, oscilloscope and FPGA. These tools will let you know
what kind of filter is made, and to see if the voltage is high, low, or neutral.
Likewise, EDA Tools are substantial since these steps are used after using
software development. Knowing how to use Quartus II, Multi-Sim, and Proteus
Professional is critical because getting hired for a job; you will have these features ready.
However, most companies like to use their own software and equipment so learning on
the job is an aspect that I am ready for. I believe my study skills and personal
communication with others can be an advantage to learn on the job. These steps are also
useful because this ties into software and hardware design. I know how to write a
functional code, so these skills are setting me up to complete my work.
My experience in the work force has yet to be tested due to the fact that I am still
currently a student. Though, I have done a six-week internship in 2012, shadowing and
working with a psychiatrist at a Veteran Affairs Hospital. In this internship, I got to sit
down with real patients and discuss their issues and problems they faced in their time in
war. Every day there was a staff meeting before the day got started and I got to voice my
opinions, which has enhanced my public speaking ability. Also I have worked as an office
secretary for a Gill Farming Company, handling bills and checks, phone calls, and
computer work. My involvement here at UC Davis has been from office hours held by

professors to continue to teach students hands on learning. As well, many teaching

assistants have helped me in lab work that theyve said is translated to the real job
experience. For instance, working with many different software languages during
computer labs and actually writing simulating codes that work. Additionally, I have a
senior design project called NATCAR coming up in fall of 2016 and this will be a twoquarter assignment. I am very excited for this task because I believe accomplishing this
will help translate to any job field that I pursue in. The senior design project includes
work in hardware, software, and EDA tools in order to complete this task. So both
computer and physical work will be necessary to complete the project which I already
have prior experience too.
My work and drive to learn will continue to develop strong and critical thinking
towards my profession. I believe in order to succeed; one must learn how to fail.
Whenever I have failed a task I just keep coming back stronger with more knowledge
than I knew before. I continue to strive in a positive direction that will only be beneficial
towards my field. I hope that my prior experience in my coursework here at UC Davis
can help translate to real problems and issues towards engineering. I have dedicated my
work and passion to learn as much material as possible so I can be ready in my
profession. I am confident that I know my resources and job responsibilities so that I can
bring these attributes to a successful company. I look forward to continue my line of work
in electrical engineering in the software field and I hope I am a successful candidate for
the position that you offer.
