KINETIC ARCHITECTURE
Architecture in motion
INTRODUCTION:
Kinetic architecture is a concept through which buildings
are designed to allow parts of the structure to move, without
reducing overall structural integrity.
A building's capability for motion can be used just to: enhance
its aesthetic qualities; respond to environmental conditions;
and/or, perform functions that would be impossible for a static
structure.
The possibilities for practical implementations of kinetic
architecture increased sharply in the late-20th century due to
advances in mechanics, electronics, and robotics.
EXAMPLE- An early instance of kinetic architecture is
the drawbridge. (Middle ages / earlier)

AIM:
The primary aim is to understand the basics of kinetics in
architecture and to develop a detailed study as to how it
is being applied as a building mechanism in different
structures.

OBJECTIVE:
To study
-

Design of the kinetic components

Study about the mechanism
Application of kinetic architecture in different types of

buildings
Study about application in different case studies.

SCOPE:
Recently, over a period of time, most of the architectural
buildings have been only STATIC without any kind of DYNAMICS.
With advanced developments in the field of mechanics,
electronics and robotics, architecture could also be focused
towards kinetic building technology. The drastic changes in
weather also raise a great necessity for kinetic buildings which
changes itself according to the changing climatic conditions.
Therefore, there is a lot of scope kinetic architecture in the
upcoming years.

OUTCOME:
An understanding of how kinetic architecture would change the
future.
Taking architecture to a different level.
