BARANGAY CABITNONGAN
BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
A barangay adjacent to the eastern boundary of Brgy. Pob. East. It is bounded in the north
by the Ambayoan River, on the east by brgy. Calaocan, and on the south by brgy. Nining and with
an approximate land area of 107 hectares It was formerly a sitio of Barrio Sta. Maria in the eaerly
60s. The first leader as Teniente del Barrio was the late Roman Suyat Sr.
The barangay was earlier called Cabuaan due to the abundance of the Betel nut palm tree
(bua) in the locality but most of its inhabitants preferred later to call the place cabitnongan. A
name derived from Bitnong a local softwood species that also grow abundantly and
predominantly along its creeks and riverbanks. The Bitnong trees are very important to the people
as they make it into ropes for their animals and farm use.
The place is traversed with four irrigation creeks namely: Siblot, Ili, Santol, and Salumague
Creeks which provide the much needed water to irrigate its very rich fertile soil. Hence,
Cabitnongan is naturally an agricultural and rural community. Likewise, the barangay exterior is
also traversed by the national road which is asphalt- paved and provides fater transport of people
and commodities.
Since the early 80s, the months of May to July is the planting season for string beans that
supplies needs by Metro Manila. The dawns of the month of October are busy and alive with the
rhythmic sounds echoing up to distant barangays as burned malagkit rice are pounded to produce
the well loved pinipig called Dudumen which the barangay is also noted for,
At present, the barangay is a destination of visitors, picnickers and cockfight aficionados
due to the location of the Esperanza Garden Resort and the San Nicolas Cockfight Arena. Prominent
families are the Del Rosario, Acosta, Mejia, Camizola, Suliio, Jamon, Noto, Villanueva, Enrico,
Insulia, Ruiz, and Asuncion among others.

light but progress as well, prosperity and peace to the barangay.
Last August 20, 1996, most of the ricefields of the barangay were destroyed by flash flood
brought by thypoon Lusing. A large eroded and created a wide and deep crater, big enough to
swallow big busses. Houses in sitio centro were buried in knee deep mud and a long stretch of the
school perimeter fence was destroyed. Such devastations of typhoon lusing was the worst typhoon
ever to hit the barangay, according to old folks.
Last November 1998, the initiative of PNP Provincial Diretor Pol. Sr. Supt. Rosendo N.
Ferrer, whose mother was from Cacabugaoan, had materialized with the widening, paving and

excellent road for travel, but also a long stretch of solar drying pavement fotr the community,
Other infrastructure project of this barangay by Brgy. Capt. Teodocio A. Caser and his council
included the following deep wells brgy. Hall waiting sheds, multi-purpose pavement and street
lights. This made the barangay more progressive and united.
The unity and reverence of the local folks was manifested in the successful hosting of the
first ever barangay level Christ the King Celebration of the San Nicolas De Tolentino Parish under
Rev. Jr. Numeriano Gabet as parish priest. Also, the first Basic Ecclesiastical Community (BEC) of
the parish which was established here in Cacabugaoan had demonstrated the spirituality and
religiousness of the people.
Prominent families in the barangay are the Salamanca, Serquina, Nibre, Ancheta and Ibale
among others. Some leaders of the barangay become prominent leaders of town as Municipal
Councilors like Don. Tomas Nibre, Don. Aureo Bibat and Don Pepito Salamanca. Second timer brgy.

BARANGAY
MALICO
BARANGAY MALICO
BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
Is the farthest and remotest barangay of the municipality being 40 kms. Away from the
town proper and adjoining our provincial boundary with the province of Nueva Viscaya. In fact, it is
nearer to Imugan, Nueva Viscaya being only 13 kms. Away. It is bounded on the north by
Kayapa,Nueva Viscaya; on the south by Brgy. Cacabugaoan; on the east, by Imugan, Nueva
Viscaya; on the west by Brgy. Sta. Maria East and Fianza.
It has an approximate land erea of 710 hectares with pasture lands covering the biggest
area of land, followed by cogan land. The irrigated land is the third biggest erea, while corn land
follows. The residential land covers the least land erea classification. Mlaico produces mountain
crops like sweet potato, gabi and vegetables such as cabbage, sayote, Baguio beans, petchay and
carrots. The high elevation, cold climate and the fertile soil makes Malico an ideal place for
vegetables production like Benguet. According to old folks,Malico derived its
winding flow of the Catabalism River which originated from Malico and winds down the mountain
connecting with the Ambayoan River in brgy. Sta. Maria East. As could be seen from a vantage
point in the barangay, you could see the zigzagging flow of the said river or liko-liko and was
later called Malico.
In the early 60s, Malico is a sitio of Sta. Maria until the PACD creation to undertake the
developmental challenges and subdivisions of teh countrysides that Malico devolved into a separate
barangay, Also, trival leadership devolved to political leadership to the barangays leaders of
Malico.Yet the tribal leaders still very much respected, revered and honored on matters pertaining
to customs, traditions and critical issues and problems brought to them for decision and advice.
Malico is compossed mainly of the Kalanguya ethnolinguistis group, but
everyone knows
the Ilocano dialect. The customes and traditions of the Kalanguya tribe are very much practiced
and preserved by the barangay folks although majority of them were converted to Christianity
through the long years of missionary work of Pastor Dilbert Rice, an American UCCP Pastor,
Prominent families of the barangay are the Taciong, Tindaan, Bugtong, Ancheta, Lorenzo, Guzman,
Lakias and Segundo among others.
In the early 70s, Malico could be reached easily by motor vehicles from the town proper
through the winding Villa Verde Trail some 30 kms.away. Yet, the national government failed to
maintain the trial plus the 1990 killerquake, that resulted to massive erosions, landslides and total
destruction of the road. Presently it could be reached only through the mountain road of Imugan,
Nueva Vizcaya. Thus, going to Malico from the town proper is like going in a journey to Cagayan
Valley as you have to take the route to San Jose City, then to Sta. Fe, Nueva Vizcaya and via the
mountain roads of Imugan

BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE

BRIEF HISTORY
Barangay Nining is considered as the southern gateway of San Nicolas. It is the entry point
of the municipalty from Reigion II thru San Quintin and Natividad towns. It is situated about 3
kms. away south of the town proper of natividad
According to old folks, Nining, was originally a sitio of Barrio San Jose. Nining was the left
over of the barrio when part of San Jose was taken away from San Nicolas to form the municipality
of Natividad in 1902. The creation of Natividad as a separate municipality led to the delineation of
the boundaries between the two adjacent towns. The creek passing across the barangay became
the boundary and north of the creek became Nining of Natividad.
Early settlers in Nining came from the western part of the province and form the Ilocos
provinces. However, there was no existing historical records to show how Barangay Ninig got its
name. Even old folks were not aware on how the word Nining became the name of the place.
The creation of barangays by the PACD in the early 60s led to the creation of Nining as a
separate barangay from Brgy. San Jose. It is bounded on the south by Municipality of Natividad; on
the north by Brgy. Siblot, on the East by the Brgy . Cabitnongan and on the west by the Brgy .
San Jose. The place is a flourishing agricultural community being endowed by nature with rich and
fertile soil, good community being endowed by nature with rich farm produce like palay, corn ,

SAN JOSE
BRIEF HISTORY
According to old folks, early settlers of the place came mostly from the Ilocos provinces and
from the western part of Pangasinan. They were lured by the rich fertile soil of the place and the
abundant supply of water that could make farming an all year around activity. These early settlers
were so industrious and hardworking that they till the land from dawn until dusk. Their hardwork,
pains and labor were all rewarded at the end of the harvest season because of the bountiful
harvests they have gained. In return, they offered thanks and prayers to God through the
intercession of San Jose- the patron saint of the workers and laborers. These hardworking settlers
adopted their patron saint and later named the place San Jose.
The place was then a flourishing agricultural community and a big barrio of the municipality.
It was formerly composed of three (3) big sitios namely Siblot, Centro, and Nining. Much of its
lands, were taken away along with other parts of San Nicolas when the municipality of natividad
was created in 1902.
With the increase of population in San Jose ad the PACD creation of barangas in the 60s,
Barrio San Jose was converted into three (3) separate and distinct barangays namely barangays
San Jose, Nining and Siblot. Brgy. San Jose is bounded on the South by the municipality of
Natividad; on the north by Brgy. Siblot on the east by Brgy. Nining; and on the west by Brgy. San
Roque.
As the barangay is blessed with rich and fertile soil, favorable climate, abundant water for
irrigation and industrious and hardworking people, San Jose is very much flourishing as an
agricultural community. Farm products are palay, corn, tobacco and vegetables. Livestock raising,
overseas employment and cottage industry are the other sources of income.
Prominent families of Brgy. San Jose are the Ancheta, Cocotan, Castillo, Serquia, Ortiz,
Gabanit and Flores among others. Local leaders who became prominent leaders of the town
includes Don Estanislao Hora.

SAN ROQUE
BRIEF HISTORY
Ambasa had been the former name of Barangay San Roque which is the westernmost
barangay of San Nicolas from the town proper. It is bounded on the west by Barangay Legaspi og
Tayug, Pangasinan; on the west of Brgy. Nagkaysa, on the south by Brgy. Siblot; and on the north
by Barangay Sobol. Ambasa, which in the local dialect means predominantly wet really never
runs off of water. In fact there are still places like in Sitio Allola that springs never dies out of water
even during summer months and quicksands are abundant in the barangay. Also, the free flowing
fresh and cold water springs in every palce in Sitio Ubbog in which the place is noted and familiar.
But how did Ambasa became or got the name San Roque? Some old folks in the barangay
tell this story to wit:
In the early times, the place encountered severe drought and terrible dryness. Plants, tress
and grasses withered, turned brown and dried. The creeks and the springs ran out of water and the
earth cracked in dryness. The inhabitants and the animals experienced terrible thrist and famine.
This horrible hardship the people had experienced mad them decide to seek a divine intercession
through paryers, devotions and novenas to San Roque the Patron Saint of wetness and
dampness. The local folks prayed devotedly and intently hard and hard rendered processicions for
miracle from the San Roqueto bring back water to the earth and wetness of the land. A big miracle
did happened because on the night of the procession, ot rained so hard and lasted till the next day.
Later, the grass sprouted, the trees and the plants regained their greenness and water flowers from
creeks till spring flowed continuosly in the farms. Life in Ambasa returned and became better than
before. And because of the big miracle, the local folks decide to rename Ambasa to San Roque in
hinor and devotion to San Roque who became their patron saint from there on.
From the book of Dr. Rosario Mendoza Cortez, Entitled: PANGASINAN, 1901-1986, a
political, socio-economic and cultural history published in 1990, San Roque was formerly a barrio of
the Municipality of Tayug. It was only on March 1902 that it was detached from Tayug and was
annexed to San Nicolas through the initiative of Don Alberto Mejia, the President Municioal of San
Nicolas at that time.
According to Dr. Cortez, it was in San Roque where colorum was founded by Pedro Caloza,
at dawn of March 10,1931, before they invaded and set on fire the church and town hall of Tayug,
they burned two houses in San Roque owned bt two policemen assigned at the San Nicolas police
force.
San Roque has a land area of 273 hectares with about 2000 population. Because of its rich
fertile soil and abundant water, farming and fishing are the primary means of livelihood. The
wellpaved and sphalted national road, traverse the whole stretch of the barangay making the
people and commodities so easy to travel. Early settlers to the place to originated from the
province of Ilocos Sur headed by Serapio Corpuz, Pedro Soria, Lazaro de Vera, Julian Cabalitasan,
Andres Teozo, Colas Mayota, Juan Gallardo, Felix Caloza, Vicente Merillana and Benito Rodriguito.
It is a big privilege for San Roque to be at the doorstep of San Nicolas as it is usually called
the show window of the town and the gateway to San Nicolas.
Several recognations were bestowed to the barangay like third place Outstanding Impact
Barangay in 1985 during the term of the late Brgy. Captain Asterio G. Serquia, where in 48
barangays of the province competed in the said event. It was awarded the Most Outstanding
Primary Health Care Committee of the Municipal and District Level in 1983, as well as the Food
production in 1985.
In 1996, San Roque won the congressional Search for the cleanest and greenest barangay.
A plaque of recognition was received by the Barangay officials headed by Brgy. Capt. Juan Ferrer at
the Provincial Capitol of Lingayen, as a living testimony to the unity, cooperation and progress of
the Barangay folks of San Roque.
Presently, the barangay officials of Barangay San Roque are led by Brgy. Capt. Solomon m.
Gatmen with the following barangay council members, Kgd. Benita g. Batin, Kgd Erensto g. Nimer,
Kgd. Rogelio d. Ancheta, Kgd. Benita g. Molina, Kgd Salvador R. Espaola, Kgd. Nario p. Estabillo,

STA. MARIA
WEST
BRIEF HISTORY
Sta. Maria was formerly the biggest barrio of San Nicolas extending from the eastern
boundary of the poblacion up to the Caraballo mountains. Its area was so wide that its sitios
included Cabitnongan, Calaocan, Cacabugaoan, Malico, Talingkapor, Mocudan, Cabaruan and Sta.
Maria Centro. The place was settled by migrants from the Ilocos provinces, La Union, Western
Pangasinan And Benguet. The Catholic and religious settlers adopted the Blessed Virgin Mary as
their-patron saint whom they offered prayers and intercession to God for their guidance, protection
and welfare. Later, the place was named Sta. Maria, in honor and total devotion to their patron
saint.
The devolution and creation of Barangays by the PACD in the 60s to intensify progress and
growth in the countrysides led to the separation and creation of different barangays from the sitos
of Barrio Sta. Maria, Cabitnongan, Calaocan and Malico. Mocudan, Talingkapor and some places in
the foothills of the Caraballo mountain, became Brgy. Sta. Maria east. Cabaruan and Sta. Maria
West Centro, likewise became Brgy. Sta. Maria West. Presently Brgy. Sta Maria West is composed
of three sitios, namely: Cabaruan, Centro and Nagtupakan.
Brgy. Sta. Maria west is bounded on the east by Brgy. Sta. Maria East; on the west Brgy.
Calocan; on the by Ambayoan River; and on the south by Brgy. Cacabugaoan. Tanggal Cadaanan
and Tanggal Cabaruan are the main irrigation system that support and enhance farming
productivity. Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood, livestock raising and overseas
employment are the other sources of income. A mineral water plant in Sitio Nagtupakan and owned
by Forzans Enterprises bottled spring water from the paraspas hills for domestic use and for
export.
Sta. Maria West is predominantly a religious community with the Iglesia Ni Cristo as the
dominant sect followed by the Roman Catholic and the Protestant. a Church of the Iglesia Ni Cristo
was built and standing majestically in Sitio Cabaruan, while a church of the United Church of Christ
in the Philippines could be found in the sitio Centro. A well

proper so convenient.
Some local leaders of the barangay became prominent leaders of the town like late Ex-Vice
Mayor Sanchez and former councilor Don Antonio Serquia. Prominent families of the barangay are
the Espiritu, Sanchez, Ortiz, Luzano, Serquia and Yabes among others.

SOBOL
BARANGAY SOBOL
BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
Sobol got its name from an ever-flowing spring (ubbog) that had sprouted in the locality.
The abundance supply of spring water is the source for domestic consumption and farm irrigation.
It seems that the spring was the fountain of life which the elders called it Sobol. Later, people
refer to the whole place as Sobol. This legendary place called Sobol was said be located between
Calupaan and the Ambayaoan River inhabited by settlers from Tagudin, Ilocos Sur.
Sobol was original a sitio of Barrio San Rafael located just south of Calupaan. IT is
flourishing agricultural and fishing community. Three great floods had devastated the place that led
to the exodus of its inhabitants to higher grounds across the southern bank of the ambayoan River
and to the north of Barrio San Roque. The devastating flood in 1935 eroded a big portion of Sobol
that almost all the people evacuated. The big flood in 1976 caused by supertyphoon Didang made
the second wave of evacuation. And finally, the 1979 flooding overflowing Ambayaoan River made
all the residents of finally decide and transfer totally to the present location of Sobol.
Its transfer in 1935 to the proximity of Barrio San Roque had made Sobol a sitio of San
Roque. The creation of the PACD in the 60s which intensified the creation of barangays to foster
countryside development led to the assistance of Atty. Pedrilito Aquino, the local COMELEC
Chairman at that time and with the initiative of Anastacio Andaya. Barangay Sobol is bounded on
the north by the Ambayaoan River; on the south by Brgy. San Roque; on the east by Brgy.
Casaratan; and on the west by Brgy. Legaspi in Tayug. It is about 2 kilometers away from the
town proper.
Sobol had slowly recovered from its past and it is now becoming an agricultural community
with farming as its primary means of livelihood. Farm products are palay, corn, tobacco, peanut,
and vegetables like string beans, rootcrops such as singkamas and tomato fruits. Fishing and
livestock raising are the other sources of living.
The first Teniente del Barrio of Sobol Was Severino Trinidad and followed by Billy Villanueva.
When Sobol became a Barangay, its first Barangay Captain was Bonifacio Acosta, Sr., followed by
Anastacio Andaya and Servillano Villanueva. The present Barangay Captain is Ernesto L. Facun,
who is serving its second term.
Brgy. Sobol is a religious community with Roman Catholic as the Dominants sect. Followed
by the Seventh Day Adventist and a local sect named Iglesia Watawat ng Lahi. Prominent families
in the barangay are the Andaya, Layco, Garcia, Castro and Bedaa among others.
The Barangay had gained a lot of important improvements and prominence. Its river banks
now are well protected due to the 1995 construction of the three (3) kilometers protection dike in
the Ambayaoan River from Sobol up to the town proper. This protection dike served as the road
linking the barangay road constructed through the initiative of the barangay folks in 1983.
Likewise, Brgy. Sobol was the chosen site of the 11th Diocesian
Eastern Pangasinan in November 1996.
