Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic tool which offers the most
sensitive non-invasive way of imaging the spinal cord, brain and any other areas of the body
(Hendrick and Hendee 1163). It helps establish a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and to
monitor the course of the disease.
One of the Advantages of the MRI diagnostic include it being safe for persons
vulnerable to radiation effects not limited to babies or women who are pregnant. There is no
any kind of radiations involvement in the MRI. The other advantage of MRI diagnostic is it
provides very detailed pictures of most important organs and tissues in the body thus useful
for detection and scanning of abnormalities in soft tissue structures like soft organs (brain or
heart) and cartilage tissues. Generally painless and provide detection of problems related to
the blood especially information about the blood circulation throughout the blood vessels and
body.
Disadvantages include causing slight warming of the body so most clinics avoid MRI
scanning, as a precaution during the first 3 months of pregnancy unless the scan is considered
essential. (Dr. Jeremy Jones, Radiopaedia.org) MRI scans are quiet expensive thus not for
everybody and people who are claustrophobic face problems with MRI because its done in
an enclosed space. MRI because of the high amount of electric current supply involves loud
noises in the processing.

In conclusion, as long as precautions are followed, the MRI diagnostic is a low risk
procedure. The risk or disadvantages dont outweigh the benefit so the doctor must only
request if there is a clear benefit
